Question about Mephisto Nigel Short's opening book classifications
As the manual implies, the Nigel Short distinguishes between "active" and "passive" lines. I played the Queen's Gambit Declined out and one point the move cxd5 was undercased, implying passive, when the position on that move was open. I would like to better understand how the Nig...

Re: Novag Star Aquamarine manual
Hi appleshampogal I have it...in English and other languages and would be very happy to help here. (You are absolutely right....surprisingly the only language on Alains great site is indeed German.) I'm wondering what is the best way to help you and others here. I dont have very good facility to sc...

Re: Novag Star Aquamarine manual
Hey Katherine, I haven't had much luck locating that manual either. I searched for it awhile back when considering purchasing one (I ultimately decided not to, as my collection is already heavily Novag biased). Not sure if this helps, but according to this post on schachcomputer, the game levels an...

Novag Star Aquamarine manual
I checked Alain Zanchetta's site and the manual only seems to be in German there. Anyone have an English copy?

Re: Saitek Mephisto Travel Expert vs Saitek Travel Champion 2100
I also tried the adaptive weak level 8, and the computer finds the mate in 1 instead of blundering too! Very very intriguing indeed...

Re: Saitek Mephisto Travel Expert vs Saitek Travel Champion 2100
Part of the problem is the H8-bug move not only blunders, but also it is (usually, if not always) played instantly, regardless of the level set on the computer. So, the "info" display maybe suggests another move, but this alternate cannot result from a fair enough thinking time. If I reme...

Re:
Maybe I'm wrong but if the H8 bug rears it's head, wouldnt it be possible to take back the offending move and press the info button to see it's analysis. This can then be entered as a move using referee mode. I've verified this to be the case on a particular instance on my Mephisto Chess Challenger...

Re: Just purchased the Mephisto Milano Pro - how does it play?
Actually the Challengers program is older, it is the same as that of the GK 2100, that appeared in 1993. The Milano Pro dates from 1996. Faster (20 MHz vs 10 MHz) and larger program 64kb vs 32kb Yes indeed. From what I know, MCC is based in an improved Fritz 1, and the Milano Pro is based on Fritz ...

Re: Just purchased the Mephisto Milano Pro - how does it play?
In 2004 the same computer was renamed to the Master Chess. Although it's rating might not be that of a Master (maybe USCF master?). And yes it could be a great opponent to spar with the Star Diamond :-) Regards, Paul . Yes! I'm absolutely thrilled. Maybe I'll post a game at some point in celebratio...

Re: Just purchased the Mephisto Milano Pro - how does it play?
Hello appleshampogal, you should find the manual you are looking for on Alain's webpages http://www.zanchetta.net/ ("Documentations" in the home page, then select Mephisto brand) Cheers, Tibono Thank you! I found the manual. I wonder why Mephisto chose to Christen this program with the Mi...

Just purchased the Mephisto Milano Pro - how does it play?
An offer and counteroffer later I got it! I've come close twice, but this one always managed to elude me. Now, I have two master programs in addition to my Star Diamond. I know the Star Diamond is an attacking player, but what about the Milano Pro/Master? The Mephisto Chess Challenger was based on F...

Training methods with machines you've outclassed ELO wise
I was recently thinking about the times where dedicated machines were a competitive deal considering that hardware and specs were expensive back in the day. But I wondered recently for those who were masters or grandmasters: how could they use dedicateds to improve their chess strength, especially c...

Re: Seeking information on the Krypton Meteor program
CXG had some Sphinx chess computers with Spanish town names like Granada, Alicante etc. in 1992. I think 72 levels was only a selling argument. And I suspect it could be a Riet Paap model, he once wrote about walking away from Eric White of CXG, maybe he left a prototype behind. I'm not amazed by t...

Re: Seeking information on the Krypton Meteor program
This weak program seems to come from the 4K 68hc05 CXG Sphinx Madrid, 1992, with only 16 Levels to begin with. (Same grouping, actually only 4 Levels, 4s, 30s, 2-3min, 10min (M in 2)). http://alain.zanchetta.free.fr/docs/Misc/CXG_901_Sphinx_Madrid_EN.pdf It also has that awkward position verificati...
