The Centaur is definitely a good alternative. Despite the slippery pieces, open back panel, blinding ring lights, cheap fabrication, boring stockfish and so on. Yes, the Centaur looks promising and I wish DGT great success with it. My only problem is that I would prefer a computer that I can -- at ...

Sorry if I was unclear. In the first diagram, the 2100 plays h6 (??), and after Rxh6 it walks straight into the mate by playing Rd8 -- Rh8+ Kxh8 Qh4+ Kg8 Qh7+ Kf8 Qh8 mate. Instead of Rd8 it could have taken the rook which drops the Queen after Nxe6 but doesn't lead to a forced mate -- at least not ...

Thanks for all the suggestions! While I agree that The King Performance looks like a fun machine, I am not willing to buy it since I already own a CGE. The same goes for The King Element. When I bought the CGE, I was under the impression that future engines would be available for download. I am not ...

Tips for decent dedicated machines

I recently bought a Travel Champion 2100 as stress-relief from grad school and for nostalgic reasons, I might add, since it is a travel-sized copy of the GK2100, which I owned as a kid and which would repeatedly trounce me. It's a fun little machine but unfortunately it is far too weak. I'm a middli...

I have now played twelve blitz games (tournament conditions, no take backs) and have scored two wins, four draws and six losses. As mentioned earlier, the MCGE tends to undervalue king safety; here is an example of the computer blithely going pawn hunting with not a worry in the world until it's too...

It comes with extra queens. Not sure how you would deal with underpromotion in the opening, though. While that's exceedingly rare, I would avoid playing the Albin Counter Gambit as black. :)

I received my unit Friday, and finally had some chance to test it today. My first impressions are very favorable; the build quality is good, the display is excellent, as is the move and piece recognition. What about playing strength? We know that it has proved its mettle against other computers, but...

That's an incredible statement. Are most of the posters here grandmasters? Relatively speaking. Like its predecessor the "Pro", I am sure it's strong tactically but weak -- sometimes downright suicidal -- when it comes to positional chess and endgame play. For that reason, I would never u...

Would someone that speaks German post a brief summery of any new information presented in the video? There is probably a lot of new information about the Exclusive that we haven't learned about previously. I am anxious to learn more. I could give it a shot: Pros * Excellent build quality (board) * ...

the picture is becoming clearer: 30 Sec -2500+ 1 min -2400+ 3 min-2300+ If the pool included human players, the numbers would probably be lower. I'm a 1900 (USCF) player and my score after 8 G30 is 50% (three wins, one draw and three losses). Curiously, all of my wins were tactical melees whereas m...

I've finished my mini match (i.e. no takebacks, no engine analysis) against CGP, and I must say that I am disappointed. In 6 G20/G30 games, I scored 3 (two wins and two draws each). I'm a 1900 USCF player (probably around 1800 ELO) and was expecting a much tougher challenge from a "2200" c...

I think the combination of a speedy CPU and a bare-bones engine means that we will see great fluctuations in the results. It's clearly capable of beating "the best" dedicated units. And while it sometimes flounders helplessly against weaker computers, it's also capable of playing like this...

I'm new here, but I freely admit to a few days of lurking -- ever since I discovered that there were actually strong dedicated chess computers on the market. As a kid, I had a GK 2100 that would crush me every time, and a few years ago -- while visiting my mom -- I decided to dust if off, and play a...
