Fidelity Elegance

Post by Larry »

I bought mine new in late 1984, and my pieces don’t match the ones in the picture. Others here must
also own an Elegance, and we know Fidelity had a habit of making changes on the fly. Do the pieces
in the pictures match yours?

Thanks for that Steve…I realise now I could have simply went straight to your collection. My Elegance
got a good workout in late 1984, until a few reeds went belly up. Then it sat in a dark place for decades
until I found the inspiration to try to fix it. A very nice opponent, frustratingly strong for its rating.

Colleagues,

I'll boast that I've paid attention too, so it's not so bad with my eyes yet!

These appear to be pieces from Mephsito Exclusive.

Best!

When I originally saw them when it was first advertised, I immediately thought that they were Mephisto replacement pieces.

The lad who is selling says that they were his fathers, so I guess that he has no idea about the pieces.

Hi all

Whilst prominent members have boards with the smaller Fidelity pieces, if you look at the many of the images and videos online, many, if not more have the Mephisto brand. Even our own Berger has a video on YouTube with Mephisto pieces. European market machines perhaps?

You may want to have a look at https://www.schachcomputer-online-museu ... ance-1984/

I talked to the owner and he maintains that that the pieces pictured are the original ones...

I have a nice Elegance (no light spots like the one on ebay) which came without pieces, so I resolved the matter by taking a set of french Chavet Nr.1 pieces and fitted magnets and they look good and work great.

Elegant greetings, Gerhard

Actually this is quite odd
Different pieces (officially released for sale by the company that made the computer) in Europe and different pieces in the US?
I cant think of another instance where piece sets for a chess computer were different depending upon the country you bought it from
i bought my Elegance's from one of Fidelity's major distributors in the US...so there is no question my pieces are the original pieces sold with the computer when released for sale

Surprised Regards

Might be worth checking if the Mephisto pieces were provided later in the production run. I assume that the Elegance was sold over a few years and not just 1984.
