It would result in interesting games for sure but would you be interested in looking at pictures of this event? :) It is not just about chess, at least then I don't think the Leiden participants feel this way, maybe some of the commercials feel that they have little chance of winning at the moment, Chessbase, apart from HIARCS I mean as a Chessbase program also, they have not participated with Fritz or Junior for quite some time, no fault to Leiden I believe...

Yes, I'm definitely interested in looking at pictures from this event. :-)

On the bright side, certainly well-done to the Sjeng team! This must easily be their most significant win ever

Has Diep played Sjeng yet? If not, Hiarcs could still end up getting second if it beats Diep and Diep beats Sjeng. Also, has Sjeng played The King yet?

White appears to me to have a pretty decent advantage right out of the opening--black must play very carefully, and the effects of not doing so are outside of engines' horizons, so it's not a surprise that Hiarcs evaluates this as equal. I think that black is certainly losing after move 26, and possibly sometime before. It was not a good idea to transfer those knights to the kingside. While king attack heuristics might favor such a thing, there really isn't enough potential for such a thing to go well to try this, and white's central pawns are overwhelming. This might have been a situation where Hiarcs' desirable characteristics of having a unique, attacking style worked against it, turning what I would see as an opening book bug into a fairly quick loss.

Rybka has won against Joker - so Jeroen gets the salad cream ?
Deep Sjeng gets the mayo and you get one of these pots?

Tie-breaker
Written by Jan Krabbenbos
zondag, 01 juni 2008
If the tournament is played with 14 or less participants a special tie-breaker is in effect to compensate for the effect of Swiss-system pairing. It applies to the players in the lead with an equal number of points(P). Only results against mutual opponents and the game among themselves count for Sonnenborn-Berger (SB) points. Buchholz (sum of opponent) points are discarded.

It was nice to see Theo van der Storm in Leiden today. He is the tournament director but suffered a stroke a few months ago. It was nice to chat with him and he gave out all the prizes today. Although the other members of CSVN did a great job in his absence I am sure we all hope he is back in his chair for the Dutch open which will probably be in November.
