Human Match against Designer 2265

Post by RadioSmall »

I am playing a 12 game match at a time control of 40 moves in 2 hours followed by 20 moves in 1 hour (repeating if neceessary) against my newly(!) acquired Designer 2265 . I will update in this column as the match goes on.The first game ended in a 178(!) move victory for the machine .I have set everything default for the computer ,but have the machine on ALL OPENINGS to make the match more interesting and difficult for the human player.Touch move rule applies for the human player ,alternating colors , I will have white for the second game. I missed an interesting bishop sac in the end .The game took 14 hours to complete :

-Did the machine make all the moves on the time it was fix for?
-After the second time control 20 moves 1 hour, did the machine played with the same time controls ( 20 moves/1 hour) the rest of the moves or it went back to 40 moves/2 hours for the following moves?

time regards

Yes, after 40 moves in 2 hours it did 20 moves every one hour.

Game 4 of this match was also a loss for me .Interestingly PC analysis shows that I would have had a winning position had I played 20.Bf4!! , instead of retreating my light square bishop to f1.This is somewhat good news for me as it is the first time in this match that this has happened .The Machine is clearly very strong at 40 moves in 2 hours time control:

Another win for the dedicated machine. With 7 games remaining the only question is whether the Human player (myself) can get a few draws or maybe even wins?!.I completely missed 20.Bxf7+!! , and it was all downhill from there:

Wow what a game !! I lose this one too but I managed to fight my way from a disadvantage of -7.23 pawns to a dead draw!! But my resistence is not rewarded because my 59 move throws the game away ! A game that shows that winning a won game is not only hard for humans but for computers too !! (Game analyzed with Chessmaster 11 afterwords).Relavent diagrams follow after the pgn presentation (0-6 for the Designer 2265 so far!)

Wow!! Test position of the year !! This is a dead Draw !! ( It takes Fritz 11 2minutes and 13 secondes to get a draw score!on my 2 gig laptop so its not trivial !) .59 .Bd5!!! is the only move , but I play 59.Kh6 and lose!!

Seven is a magical Number , and so was game 7 as I reached a completely winning position Against the Computer ( plus five pawns according to PC!) , Only to see it destroyed during time pressure .I had less than 5 minutes to go from move 29 to move 40 , hence major mistakes were made turning a dead won position into a dead lost won.The mistakes were 38...Be4?? and 40.....Kg8?? .In the later drawn position I played 43....Rxc3?? and it was all over .Diagrams follow after the pgn:

Game 8 was also a loss for me this time a bishop endgame. It looks like I have to avoid endgames because the machine gets advantage mostly in the Endgame against me.My move 17.exd5 makes an endgame affair , however objectively 17.cxd5 keeping the queens on was much better.Diagrams follow after pgn:

Another tough loss against the Master Rated Dedicated Computer. As stated before , the Machine wins in the Endgame most of the time. However in this game I still was not able to avoid trading Queens .The move 24..Kd8 ?? sealed my fate , and although there were some drawing chances later they were rather subtle and hard to find:
