We all have are favourite chess computer and mine personally is the Novag Diablo.
I would go as far as to say that it is a piece of art. Why a piece of art, because I never get tired of looking at the beauty of it’s design.
Now we all know who manufactured the Diablo and who programmed it and what hardware it runs under it’s bonnet but the one thing we don’t know is; ‘WHO ACTUALLY DESIGNED IT’ ?
Who sat down and produced the original design concept and brought it through to production.
This leads to another question, who are these unsung heros who have designed all the chess computers we have collected all these years?

That's done it, Bryan, now I won't be able to sleep tonight!
Since simplicity is the essence of good design, for a mix of beauty and
functionality I have to go with the humble Fidelity Excel series. They
have everything I need. The right size playing surface, the nice
bright LED display with large figures, pressure squares you don't have
to practically stand on (like the RS2250), and of course a light on every
square. All this combined with more than ample playing strength for the
average hacker like me.
There are others I like too. Mephisto's 'laptop' series are great, and
have a typical German robust design about them. For sheer attractiveness,
Saitek's RISC2500 machine is hard to beat.
As for who designed these things, this will probably be forever an
unknown. I personally think it's a crying shame the manufacturers did'nt
bother to keep archives on what might for some seem trivialities. I'd
be interested also to know what type of wood was used in each. The
Novag was made in Hong Kong, but the actual wood could have come
from pretty much anywhere. The Fidelity wood for their products would
come from a US forest, you'd assume. The shape and design of the
whole layout for each of them would have been sketched out in a board
room somewhere on a sheet of paper with people standing around
holding coffee mugs and offering suggestions.
