HIARCS iPhone v Chessmaster GM

Post by Carl Bicknell »

For old times sake I decided to test The Chessmaster GM edition running at 3.6GHz (2 cores used) vs the new upgrade of HIARCS iPhone 13.31. My iPhone is the iPhone 4, clock speed 800 MHz. The difference in speed between the two is therefore considerable.

I played a 10 game match at G30. The final score was 6-4 in favour of HIARCS iPhone, which is an achievement. HIARCS was using my subscription book and this gave it a BIG advantage over CM's old book, but even so it was impressive to see the 'little guy' win.

Here's a nice win by HIARCS:

[Event "Game 3"]
[Date "2011.09.08"]
[White "HIARCS 13.31 iPhone 4"]
[Black "Chessmaster GM 3.6GHz"]
[Result "1-0"]

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5 5. e4 Nxc3 6. bxc3 Bg7 7. Nf3 c5 8.
Rb1 O-O 9. Be2 Nc6 10. d5 Ne5 11. Nxe5 Bxe5 12. Qd2 b6 13. f4 Bg7 14. c4 e5 15.
O-O f5 $2 {This dodgy moves was the Chessmaster's last book move, outbooking
Hiarcs. It's the sort of move the King used to play in the 1990's, but times
have moved on...} 16. d6 $1 Bb7 17. Bb2 Bxe4 18. fxe5 Bxb1 19. Rxb1 Rb8 20. Bf3
h5 21. e6 Bxb2 22. Rxb2 Qf6 23. e7 Rfe8 24. Rb1 Rxe7 25. dxe7 Qxe7 26. Re1 Qh4
27. g3 Qd4+ 28. Qxd4 cxd4 29. Re7 1-0

EDIT: Before the upgrade I ran exactly the same match with version 12.4 of HIARCS iPhone using the stock book. The match ended 7-3 in the Chessmaster's favour.
