Berlin Professional

Post by Larry »

I see on German ebay at the moment a defective Berlin Pro. There
must be two different style of boxes, because the seller's box is
different from mine. Here is his:

Here is mine:

Note mine has no orange tape on the corner, and mine says
'Berlin Professional' on the box. The seller's box only says 'Berlin'.
Have others noticed the different Berlin Pro boxes? Was mine late
in the production run, perhaps?
Your thoughts are welcome,
Larry
PS While I've got you, were all the Berlin Pro's sold complete with the
dust cover?... or were some sold without? I did read somewhere that
not all the Atlanta's were sold with a dustcover. The one on German ebay
in the above photo seems not to have a dustcover.

Actually i have a third Berlin Pro box

the sticker is on the right side:

this also means there must have been two Berlin boxes
one with the 1993 on the left and one on the right

and then i have a Berlin Pro Upgraded with the London program which came in this box:

both have their dust covers

my guess is that the boxes with the Orange Sticker/Tape came out before the box with the words "Professional" on it

Fidelity did this with the Par Excellence
the very first Par's came in an Excel box with a black Tape/sticker..then eventually they made the Par it's own box

First Par Box:

Later Par Box:

Berlin Par Regards
Steve
P.S. would you have the link for that auction?
it dosent seem to pop up on any of my search routines

It looks like the board could use a little cleaning (though sometimes photos make things like this look dusty/dirty)

Appears to have 10 gebote worth of interest so far Regards,
Dave

Yeah, I'm wondering how many of those "geboters" know the
thing is not working. I also guessed it's done a fair bit of work,
judging by the wear marks around the control buttons. There's
actually only seven bidders and a total of ten bids.. Quite a bit
of interest for something that might be forever more nothing but
an expensive manual chess board.

It went for 252 Euro. The auction finished at 6.00am this morning my
time, and I got up to make what I thought was a generous bid of
170 Euro... may as well have stayed in bed.
I hope the successful bidder can get it going. It seems the problem
was a display that only the top half appeared and then only momentarily.
Presumable the playing surface was dead, and no sound. I thought maybe
it was a power supply problem which I could have fixed, but there's a limit
on how much much I would gamble.
If it's repairable, then there is a potential 500 Euro quick profit waiting
for it's new owner.
