Marcel Duchamp was the Andy Warhol of the chess world. He originally designed these unique chess pieces in ebony and what appears to be teak wood. A quality reproduction would be a boon to any chess set collection, though the cheap plastic rendition doesn’t do it justice, in my opinion.Steve B wrote:Technology is advancing waaay too fast for me

What I really like is Marcel Duchamp’s chess table featuring these pieces and the analog chess clocks built into the table (scroll to the far right).

I took another look at them and found them even worse. To me, if an 'artiste' is going to mess with chess pieces, the design should reflect some understanding of the value/importance of the pieces.
The bishops look like oversized pawns. The king is supposed to be the most important piece, but the rounded top makes it look emasculated. As for the oversized rooks, well...

What gets me is the price. The box might be worth 20 bucks, andSirDave wrote:I took another look at them and found them even worse. To me, if an 'artiste' is going to mess with chess pieces, the design should reflect some understanding of the value/importance of the pieces.

The pieces are basically just a photo copy. Why isn't the price
maybe 35 bucks?

That is exactly how I responded. Maybe $35, but $166 for plastic chessmen? The seller is well known but in this case it may be hard to find the right buyer.Larry wrote:What gets me is the price. The box might be worth 20 bucks, and The pieces are basically just a photo copy. Why isn't the price

Yes, I must concur on both points.SirDave wrote:I took another look at them and found them even worse. To me, if an 'artiste' is going to mess with chess pieces, the design should reflect some understanding of the value/importance of the pieces.

The minimalist king design doesn’t appeal to me either, and I would have much preferred some type of adornment, though not necessarily a cross atop. As it stands (pun intended), the queen is slightly taller than the king on this set, which is uncommon. Was Duchamp trying to downplay the importance of the king?
The bishops look a bit like pawns because they lack the finials featured on most Staunton type sets. I also own vintage metalware sets in which the bishop’s miter was omitted by design.

Good buy Larryadler!!
By the way theres a saitek rennaissance with the brute force module for $1400, no bidders, how come nobody is bidding? Too expensive ? Whats a reasonable price?
Curious regards
Mike

I guess its the module Mikechesspcmac wrote: By the way theres a saitek rennaissance with the brute force module for $1400, no bidders, how come nobody is bidding? Too expensive ? Whats a reasonable price?
if I were looking for a Ren Brute I would pay up to $1000..but that's me I guess
theres a Ren Sparc on ebay which has 20 bidders and a current price of about $1400(as I write)
to be honest the large Wooden Saitek boards(Leonardo,Galileo and Ren) don't generally generate the same bidding frenzy as the large wooden Fidelity boards or even the large Novag wooden boards
never understood why that is exactly ..but..
Way It Is Regards
