Hi,
Karsten Bauermeister (everybody should know him as a big collector) is selling his huge collection with all the rare gems like Fidelity Premiere or Fidelity V5, V10 etc. pp.

More informations you can get at my forums: http://www.warnemuende.cc/forum/viewtop ... df88ce8567

Hi Sascha

Always Sad to see a collector give up the hobby and sell-off
especially the undisputed Worlds top collector
:(

I guess it is inevitable though...
perhaps its time for me to give some serious consideration to selling as well

Hi Steve,

I am thinking about making an offer ...

It is still my dream to make the only chess computer museum in the world ... 8)

And to your collection ... I am still in contact with your wife ... one day after you are two meter under the ground I will take the next flight to NYC ...

Hi Steve,

I was thinking that the pleasure in making a collection was the search for the missing rare object still not present in our collection.
I know that both of you have already a huge collection... Still it must remain some interest or impossible goal to achieve.
I agree that giving up a collection is a definitive action that could be experienced like a mourning.
Sure, we aged with our collection!
My only wish is to age as gracefully as my collection...

This is quite true
in fact...i was contacted by Karsten about a week ago asking if i was interested to buy the whole collection
i of course declined
shipping costs from Germany to the USA for 800+ computers would cost thousands ..perhaps 10's of thousands.. of dollars ..not to mention the extensive damage that would undoubtedly occur in shipping
i did offer to purchase about 15 items from the collection but he was interested in a bulk sale only
several of these items i have been searching for ..for a very long time
i imagine i will come away with nothing from this great collection being sold

Sigh Regards

Nothing in life is permanent except change. I contacted Karsten
yesterday inquiring about a couple of models, but no reply yet.
He did mention he was interested in a bulk offer for all or most
of the collection, and that would be the best way to sell. But all
us collectors have already got most chess comps, and only want to
finally get a few we have been waiting years for, eg, the V10.
A handful of Karsten's computers will bring a *very* high price,
but he will be selling a lot of them for a song.
Have you got 50K euro to make an offer for the shebang? Of course
then it will be you who is advertising them all individually and packing
each one.
From Karsten's standpoint, the best he can do is make an online
database of offers for each unit, and let the offers come in for perhaps
a month. I don't think anyone doubts his integrity, so the bids on some
units will go quite high.
I agree it's sad to see someone bow out of the hobby.

Obviously, you have not yet the Collector Fever!
Collecting is a passion and as such it doesn't have a rationale explanation...
However, I think that a collector is obviously appreciating the objects that he is collecting. A painting collector is obviously not a painter, but it 's doesn't prevent him to appreciate the paintings.
I don't consider myself as a player or a master, still I appreciate what it means being a great player. It doesn't prevent me to want to collect the attempts to reproduce the human reasoning in a computer. "Human beings have created tools reproducing and enhancing the functions of their body before to create tools reproducing the functioning of their brain".
It is fascinating that we started in this way by Chess: we tried to have automatons and finally computer players...

Obviously you have not read through very much of the forums threads and posts
theres much more to this forum than what appears on last last 2-3 pages
i have posted many games and matches over the years involving 100's of different computers
these would include games i have played Vs Computers
Computer Vs Computer
and several forum games played here where i operated a computer..including a few games Vs Mark Uniacke who operated a dedicated computer
AFAIK all of these threads are still available for your reading pleasure

Generally speaking i find it is usually better to think before posting

Where does it say in my last post that I said that you haven't posted many games and matches over the years involving 100's of different computers?

Sometimes its better to learn how to comprehend the English language before you post.

Can't you take a little joke?

Cheers

My impression is that such collection will be very hard to sell, or at least it will take a lot of time !!!
If he decided to put all items on ebay in a short period, my gues is that there is not enough money available amongst collectors to buy them fast :? (i.e. most collections represent a lot of money... but spent progressively)

Anyway, reading the list and dreaming is already very pleasant

I'm overwhelmed by the size of the collection. I wouldn't even know where to begin unloading it. Probably would hire someone- wouldn't have the heart, let alone the patience, to do it myself.

I showed an interest in a few of them but got no reply to my email.
Understandable, because if he's not careful all the good stuff will be
gone and he will be left with the rubbish, having to sell them for
peanuts.
I've got mixed feelings about the future of chess comp collecting.
Yes, some will increase in value like an old painting or postage stamp,
but those things are not electronic and don't break down. Probably
a good idea for the big collectors to watch the unwinding of Carsten,s
collection.
If the entire collection goes to a single offer it will probably be for
an undisclosed amount. My rough guess would be around 30K Euro,
or around 37 Euro per comp on average. The new owner would then
have to feed the ones he does not want onto eBay rather slowly.
Small time collector regards...
Larry
