Thats the point exactly
to sell something like this you need to do it in one shot
take the poison in one gulb and be done with it
each of these computers will rekindle a memory or story for Karsten who has been collecting long before the rise of Ebay where with one click you own a new old computer
to pull each one of the shelf..wrap it..pack it up and watch it go out the door ...piece by piece...one by one
Is like dying ..not once... but

800 Deaths Regards

I think the best way to proceed would be to appoint someone with the time to actually sell them all on a commission basis. I cannot see any one individual ever purchasing the entire collection in bulk.

Here is another example of a collector of console games including chess programs, here sell it on ebay.

One option is to put the price of the whole lot on ebay and wait patiently until it is sold...

And that eBay seller is worried that playing through the collection will take several lifetimes? Methinks getting over half a million dollars for it will take a lot longer than that!

Back to selling collections and it is situations like this that make me appreciate the advantages of having a tiny collection (I have set a hard rule that everything has to fit inside a double sided cabinet bought specifically for the purpose. The cabinet is pretty much full and has been for a several years now, though I still have some reserve space if and when a couple of portables come up that I still want.

From memory, apart from the 1980s when I did chop and change machines regularly (most of us would have back in those days), I think I have only disposed of two of my own, personal machines since then - one was a standard Conny swap with Steve and one was an internal trade within the family. Some machines have died of natural causes of course and could not be repaired.

My biggest regret was - of all things - selling a perfectly mint Scisys Superstar that I bought absolutely brand spanking new (and on layby) with my very first pay packet back in February 1985. To this very day I rank selling it as one of the most stupid, silly and shortsighted things I have ever done. I wish I still had that machine today. And so I have never sold anything since apart from those very few exceptions. Although I truly love my Sensor XL (it is still my favourite machine), it isn't quite the substitute for that old Superstar, despite the playing strength being almost identical.

My chess computer collection has no commercial value and will never be sold so long as I am alive. I imagine it will be unceremoniously taken to the local tip after I am gone.

I guess it is inevitable though...
perhaps its time for me to give some serious consideration to selling as well

30 K seems low to me Larry
my guess is that of his 800+ computers
less than 50 are really desired by collectors
in fact i think that only about 25 of his computers comprise 95% of the total value of the collection
he should just reduce the offer down to 25 of his best units and put them up for bid in one lot
now..30 k for that reduced lot seems like a good...
Starting Bid Regards

Well yes, but that sort of negates the whole idea of offloading the entire
collection in one fell swoop. It also leaves the seller with the headache of
getting rid of around 775 machines of very low value. Scanning the
collection, I saw a whole lot of handhelds, at least one with an LCD screen,
and a couple of other games (backgammon and reversi, I think). A lot of
stuff like Fidelity 'doorstoppers', eg '8', '9', and '10' level units. Let's not
forget, not all the machines work.
Let's say someone made an opening bid of 30K euro for just 25 machines,
they are offering around 1200 euro per machine. I can't see anyone
offering that much, not in this economic climate.
Regarding the remaining 775 machines, they would be best sold to a
fellow German, so that a small truck could be rented and stacked up with
chess computers. The new owner would then have the burden of
storing/photographing/advertising and packaging all that stuff. I hope
he's got a lot of spare time. If he sold 6 units/week the collection would
be gone in about two and a half years.
I've got a great idea for the seller. He can sell me the following:
V10 500 euro
Excel Mach4 200 euro
Designer Mach4 150 euro
Fidelity Elite 100 euro.
Genius modules 100 euro
That adds up to 1050 euro. I would even contribute 20 euro towards
the shipping. Can't be fairer than that.

Actually i made that suggestion because i think there are two solid chances of selling the entire collection in one fell swoop
slim and none(and ..Slim..just left town)

although the worlds Second biggest collection resides not far from Karsten
another great collection ..which sadly includes my CLJ l'Emperour ..traded by me to this other great collector ..in a moment of utter madness
this collector could easily take the entire kit n kaboodle if he was missing enough of the items

anyway...
its a pity i dont live in Germany
i have had dreams of pulling up to Karstens house with one of those heavy metal compression trucks
i purchase everything for 30k-40k.. drive a few miles away...where i have an accomplice with a smaller van waiting
i transfer the 25-30 high-end and rare items to the van
the accomplice drives off in the truck ..crushing the remaining items into one heap of twisted metal ,plastic ,wood and wires which he then dumps off at the tip
i drive on into the night with the good stuff...

Camera fades...
"Born To Be Wild" comes up on the van radio
Screen Credits Roll ..
lights come up in the theatre
a moment of silence ..
and then the Audience erupts cheering and clapping loudly

If that is the way it is going to be, I would rather see the Mythbusters simply blow it up with a C4. And maybe some detcord wrapped around a few of the machines for extra added thrills.

Anyone have any update on Karsten selling his collection?
did he sell it in one lot
or..
decide to break it up into smaller lots
or..
decide not to sell at all?
after an early flurry of emails from him....things have grown eerily silent

In The Dark Regards
