Guys,

the Mephisto Berlin has got hashtables! Its a program very similar to the Mephisto Vancouver 68000. Actually, not a bad endgame player at all.

Yesterday there was a 30min-game between Mephisto Nigel Short and Corona D+ where I was happy I didn't pull the plug after 50 moves:

update on my 3 min. avg. response tournament...

Novag Constellation 3.6 has dropped out.
He is not on one of the stronger teams so it won't effect anything.

Good evening chess fans and welcome to "Masterpiece Theater"!

Where we take a closer look at decisive and brilliant table top chess computer battles.

I'm your host Bruce Pandolfini

Today we are going to take a look at Novag Diamond II vs Novag Turquoise
A game played just the other day in LWSteve's 3 min. avg. response tournament.

But first lets look at the "tale of the tape".
Because these two computers though they are both Novags and both have been programmed by Dave Kittinger they do have different innards.

Diamond II - yr. 1997
elo - 2165
freq. - 32 MHz
processor => 8 bit - - H8/325 Singlechip HD6433258
RAM - 129 KB of which 118 KB is for Hash Tables
ROM - 160 KB
opening library - 123,000 positions
can see up to 28 half moves ahead
----------------------
Turquoise - yr. 1998
elo 2010
freq. - 26.6 MHz
processor => 16 bit - - H8
RAM - 1 KB
ROM - 32KB
opening library - 8,900 positions
can see up to 18 half moves ahead
--------------------------

So as you can see this is not the Excalibur Key Chain that Diamond II is about to play.
Turquoise has an elo rating above 2000! 8)

And I will say this again... Diamond II is the greatest 8 bit chess computer ever built!
This game that you will soon see proves it!

So without further ado...

[Date "2013.06.16"]
[White "Novag Diamond II"]
[Black "Novag Turquoise"]
[Result "1-0"]
[T/C 3 min. avg. response]
[WhiteElo "2165"]
[BlackElo "2010"]

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Bg5 e6

Here below we have the main line of the Sicilian Najdorf (6. Bg5) being played by Diamond II
It prevents Black from going into a Dragon Variation (P-KN3) as BxN would screw up his pawn structure.

[fen]rnbqkb1r/1p3ppp/p2ppn2/6B1/3NP3/2N5/PPP2PPP/R2QKB1R w KQkq - 0 7[/fen]

7. f4 Be7 8. Qf3 Qc7 9. O-O-O Nbd7 10. g4 b5 11. Bxf6 Nxf6 12. g5 Nd7
13. f5 Nc5 14. f6 gxf6

Now we have 14 full moves completed. (white to move)
At this point both computers are finally out of book.
White has O-O-O long and the Black King looks like it is happy in the middle of the board. For now anyways... 8) :D

[fen]r1b1k2r/2q1bp1p/p2ppp2/1pn3P1/3NP3/2N2Q2/PPP4P/2KR1B1R w kq - 0 15[/fen]

15. gxf6 Bf8 16. Rg1 Bd7 17. a3 Rb8 18. Qe3 Qb6 19. b4 Nb7

Now we have 19 full moves completed. (white to move)
At this point, Diamond II on his next move (his 20th) makes perhaps the greatest "Hook- Line and Sinker" move I have ever seen a table top computer make.
When I saw Diamond II make this move for the first time it made my curly hair stand up straight. I was in awe!
Can you guys spot this human-like move that Novag computers are famous for making?

[fen]1r2kb1r/1n1b1p1p/pq1ppP2/1p6/1P1NP3/P1N1Q3/2P4P/2KR1BR1 w k - 0 20[/fen]

20. Nd5 Qd8

Here we have 20 full moves completed.
Diamond II has played 20. Nd5!
Turquoise then plays Qd8 to protect his King.
There is a freebee on d5 however, would you guys take it if you're Black?
I know... You need an escape route for your Black King before you take it. Right? 8)

[fen]1r1qkb1r/1n1b1p1p/p2ppP2/1p1N4/1P1NP3/P3Q3/2P4P/2KR1BR1 w k - 0 21[/fen]

21. Kb1 h6 22. h4 h5 23. Rg5 Qc8

Here we have 23 full moves completed.
Diamond II still has his knight on d5.
Its there if Turquoise wants it.
Who says nothing in life is free.
Things have changed a little however... Turquoise has an escape route for his King.
Like in the Snagglepuss cartoon... Take the knight on d5 and then exit stage left.
Would Turquoise do such a thing? 8)

[fen]1rq1kb1r/1n1b1p2/p2ppP2/1p1N2Rp/1P1NP2P/P3Q3/2P5/1K1R1B2 w k - 0 24[/fen]

24. Bh3 exd5 25. exd5+ Kd8

Here we have 25 moves completed and just like Snagglepuss...
Turquoise takes the knight on d5 and then exits stage left!
The fur is really going to fly now folks! 8)

[fen]1rqk1b1r/1n1b1p2/p2p1P2/1p1P2Rp/1P1N3P/P3Q2B/2P5/1K1R4 w - - 0 26[/fen]

26. Nc6+ Kc7 27. Qc3 Bxh3 28. Na7+ Kb6

Now we have 28 full moves completed. (white to move)
The knight on d5 was a spring-loaded trap all along.
You take take it and you lose your Queen! (everything was forced)

[fen]1rq2b1r/Nn3p2/pk1p1P2/1p1P2Rp/1P5P/P1Q4b/2P5/1K1R4 w - - 0 29[/fen]

29. Nxc8+ Bxc8 30. Qe3+ Kc7 31. Rd3 Nd8

Now we have 31 full moves completed. (white to move)
But wait Turquoise has a knight and two bishops for his queen and a pawn.
Black should be ok here right?
NOT! 8)

[fen]1rbn1b1r/2k2p2/p2p1P2/1p1P2Rp/1P5P/P2RQ3/2P5/1K6 w - - 0 32[/fen]

32. Qa7+ Rb7 33. Rc3+ Kd7 34. Qf2 Rc7 35. Qf5+ Ne6 36. Rxh5 Rxc3
37. Rxh8 Ke8 38. Qg4 Re3 39. Qg8 Re1+ 40. Kb2 Kd8 41. Qxf7 Bd7
42. dxe6 Be8

Now we have 42 full moves completed. (white to move)
And those two Black Bishops in the diagram...
Little do they know, but they are both going to end up in LWSteve's empty cottage cheese container real soon. :D

[fen]3kbb1R/5Q2/p2pPP2/1p6/1P5P/P7/1KP5/4r3 w - - 0 43[/fen]

43. Qa7 Rxe6 44. Rh7 Bf7 45. Rxf7 Be7 46. fxe7+ Rxe7 47. Qxe7+ Kc8

Now we have 47 full moves completed (white to move)
Diamond II can mate with either his Queen or his Rook at this point and he decides to mate with his rook and he plays...

48. Rf8# and its Good Night Sweet Prince for Turquoise! :D

[fen]2k5/4QR2/p2p4/1p6/1P5P/P7/1KP5/8 w - - 0 48[/fen]

Diamond - bought in the year 1997 by me LWSteve
Record 7 wins - 1 lose - 1 draw

-------------------------

I'm joined right now by Bruce Pandolfini
Bruce how do you see this one unfolding?

Steve... Excel has wins over Igor and Radio Shack Master Chess.
so Diamond had better not get over confident here.
Excel should just keep the position closed and work his knights.

Bruce how about Diamond in this one?
If Diamond has a weakness, its that he doesn't give a lot respect to the bishop pair. He likes knights! He will often chop his opponents knights with
his bishops and then work his two remaining knights with his queen. If this one goes into the late rounds Excel could have a bishop over knight advantage Steve.

Well there you have it folks...
Lets go down to table top side...

[Date "2013.06.17"]

Below we have 13 full completed.
And we have the main line of the Sicilian Najdorf (6. Bg5) being played once again, this time by Diamond.
Excel was out of book after 12 moves but still found the next book move anyway of 13...Bxg5+
Excel captures the bait on g5 but has now opened the g file for Diamonds heavy artillery.

14. Kb1 e5 15. Nd5 Qb7

Below we have 15 full completed.
And just as Bruce stated in the pregame show...
The Novag Diamonds prefer knights over bishops!!
Will Diamond play 16. Ne6 or 16. Rg1
Either move will be devasting for Excel & The Spracklens!

Diamond does play 16. Ne6! and Excel has no choice but to capture with his f pawn.
17. Qh5+ is there for Diamond on his next move if he wants it.

Excel has blocked the check with his g pawn.
This was not his best move. 17...Kf8 was better for Excel.

Excel is about ready to go!

29. Bh5+ Rf7 30. Qxf7# 1-0

And its all ovuh as Howard would say!
Novag Diamond "The Black Beauty" takes out a 1920 rated computer in only 30 moves!

[fen]2b1k3/5Q2/p3p3/1p2p2B/4P3/3R4/PPP4P/1K6 b - - 0 30[/fen]

Novag Diamond now goes to 8-1-1
Fidelity Excel goes to 3-3-1

Next time on Masterpiece Theater...

We have a Mephisto - Novag grudge match!

Mephisto Master Chess - elo 2162
vs
Novag Citrine - elo 2090

This game came down to a Queen vs two Rooks ending.

Which computer had the queen?
Which computer had the two rooks?
Who won?

Don't miss this game...

Next time on Masterpiece Theater! :D

Good evening chess fans and welcome to "Masterpiece Theater" once again!

Where we take a closer look at decisive action packed, table top chess computer battles.

I'm your host LWSteve

Tonight we have a Mephisto - Novag Grudge Match for ya!

Novag Citrine elo 2090 (white)
vs
Mephisto Master Chess elo 2170 (black)

This a game played recently in my 3 min. avg. response tournament.

But first lets look at the "tale of the tape".

-------------------------------------------------
Novag Citrine - yr. 2006
Record 7 wins - 0 loses - 3 draws
elo - 2090
freq. - 20 MHz
processor => 16 bit - H8/3687

Mephisto Master Chess - yr. 2004

RAM - 4 KB (No Hash Tables)
ROM - 64 KB
opening library - 50,000 positions
-------------------------

I'm joined right now by Bruce Pandolfini
Bruce, there is no love loss between these two computers.
But how much of a chance does Citrine really have tonight?

Steve right now Citrine is playing perhaps the best chess of any computer in the tournament.
Citrine likes the longer time controls! It won't be long and we could see his rating near 2150.

Bruce, how about Mephisto Master Chess? Is he still the computer to beat in this tournament?
MMC has only been beaten once and that was by Novag Star Diamond in an exhibition game.
MMC with that 32 bit processor always plays a tuff middle game and he is definitely the favorite tonight Steve.

Well there you have it folks...
Lets go down to table top side...

[Date "2013.06.23"]
[White "Novag Citrine"]

Below we have 13 full book moves completed.
Against e4 MMP has chosen to play the Caro-Kann, Panov-Botvinnik Attack fianchetto variation.
Citrine has the extra doubled pawn in the center but will he be able to hold it?

Citrine is looking good here Bruce!
Yes Steve look at the positioning of Citrine's knights.
They are advanced to say the least!

Below we have 35 full moves completed.
Citrine is up material with a passed rook pawn to boot!
Bruce, would Citrine dare play 36. Qxc8 and give up his queen for two rooks?
He might Steve he just might!

Below we have 37 full moves completed.
Citrine now has two rooks and a knight!
Mephisto Master Chess has the queen and a bishop!
Don't go to the refrigerator folks, I have a feeling this one is going to get very interesting.

38. Rc5 Qe4 39. Rf3 Qb1 40. Rc7 g5 41. Ne2 Qxb3 42. Rxf7 Kg8 43. Rfxe7 Bf8

Below we have 43 full moves completed.
and Citrine is playing like a 13 year old Bobby Fischer!
I have never seen Mephisto Master Chess get pushed around like this before!
But its not over yet because MMC still has his Queen!

[fen]5bk1/2R1R3/7p/3P2p1/Pp1P4/1q2P2P/4N1PK/8 w - - 0 44[/fen]

49. Rfc6 b2 50. Rb8 Qa7

Below we have 50 full moves completed.
And MMC is getting his lunch handed to him!
Bruce, I have never seen MMC play this poorly before.
Tonight Steve, Mephisto Master Chess is living proof that the 3 Stooges did have children. He is playing awful!

[fen]1R6/q5k1/2R4p/6p1/P2P4/2N1P2P/1p4PK/8 w - - 0 51[/fen]

Below we have 58 full moves completed.
But wait... Frans Morsch in the MMC corner has thrown in the towel!

This one is all ovuh!!
The crowd here is going crazy!

[fen]8/3R4/6kp/6p1/P2P4/2N1P2P/6PK/8 w - - 0 59[/fen]

Citrine's record now goes to 8-0-3
Mephisto Master Chess drops to 6-1-3

Well thats it from here folks.
For Bruce Pandolfini I'm LWSteve

Good evening chess fans and welcome to "Masterpiece Theater" once again!

Where we take a closer look at decisive action packed, table top, chess computer battles.

I'm your host... LWSteve

Tonight folks we have a no disqualification "Casket Match" between

Radio Shack 2200X - White (elo 2040)
and
Mephisto Chess Challenger - Black (elo 2025)

The rules are simple... The first computer to get thrown inside the casket and have the lid closed loses!

This was a game played recently in my 3 min. avg. response tournament.

But first lets look at the "tale of the tape".

-------------------------------------------------
Radio Shack 2200X - yr. 1996
Record 5 wins - 3 loses - 0 draws
elo - 2040
freq. - 10 MHz
processor => 8 bit - H8
RAM - .5 KB (No Hash Tables)
ROM - 16 KB
opening library - 28,000 positions
----------------------
Mephisto Chess Challenger - yr. 2004
Record 6 wins - 1 lose - 0 draws
elo 2025
freq. - 10 MHz
processor => 8 bit - H8
RAM - 32 KB (No Hash Tables)
ROM - 1 KB
opening library - 6,000 positions
-------------------------

Bruce Pandolfini is on assignment.
So I'm joined right now by my special guest The Undertaker who is retired from the WWF
and an avid chess player himself.

Undertaker, how do you see things "shaking down" tonight?
Steve this one I'm predicting will be a pier six brawl!
Mephisto Chess Challenger with already a big victory over Novag Diamond.
and Radio Shack 2200X with victories over GK 2000 and Novag Aquamarine 26.6 MHZ
Need I saw more, other than someone will be going into that casket next to the table. This I can rest assure you!

Well there you have it folks...
Lets go down to table top side...

[Date "2013.06.30"]
[White "Radio Shack 2200X"]
[Black "Mephisto Chess Challenger"]
T/C 3 min. avg. respopnse]
[ECO "D26"]
[WhiteElo "2040"]
[BlackElo "2025"]

1. Nf3 Nf6 2. d4 d5 3. c4 dxc4 4. e3 e6 5. Bxc4 Nbd7 6. O-O c5

Below we have 6 full book moves completed.
The Queen's Gambit accepted is being played here.
The 2200X we think will be attacking on the queenside which is usually the format for White in the Queen's Gambit.

Black's 6th move c5 was the 2nd best book move reply.
6...a6 was the more popular GM book move for Black.

[fen]r1bqkb1r/pp1n1ppp/4pn2/2p5/2BP4/4PN2/PP3PPP/RNBQ1RK1 w kq - 0 7[/fen]

7. b4 cxd4 8. Qxd4 Be7 9. a3 O-O 10. Bb2 a5 11. Rd1 axb4 12. axb4 Rxa1 13. Bxa1 Bxb4

Below we have 13 full moves completed.
Mephisto Chess Challenger (black) with a nice little combination has picked a pawn!
The 2200X is down material already, and has a Black Pawn on b7 that he will have to deal with later.

[fen]2bq1rk1/1p1n1ppp/4pn2/8/1bBQ4/4PN2/5PPP/BN1R2K1 w - - 0 14[/fen]

14. Nbd2 Bc5 15. Qc3 Qe7 16. Ne4 Bb4 17. Qd4 Ba5 18. Bb5 Rd8 19. Nd6 Nf8 20. Ne5 Bc7

Below we have 20 full moves completed.
and Radio Shack 2200X has completely taken over this game!
Will the 2200X play 21. Nexf7.... if he does look out!
Undertaker how do you see things at this point?
This casket match already reminds me of the one I had in 2008 against "The Big Show"
One of these two is going into that casket... adapter and all!!!!

[fen]2br1nk1/1pb1qppp/3Npn2/1B2N3/3Q4/4P3/5PPP/B2R2K1 w - - 0 21[/fen]

21. Nexf7 Qxf7 22. Nxf7 Rxd4 23. Rxd4 Kxf7

Below we have 23 full moves completed.
The 2200X did play 21. Nexf7!

The 2200X has opened up MCC like you would open up a can of soup.
If the 2200X plays 24. Rc4 then that could be the Coup de grâce!

Mephisto Chess Challenger better do something quick or he will be in the soup line after he gets out of the casket Steve!

[fen]2b2n2/1pb2kpp/4pn2/1B6/3R4/4P3/5PPP/B5K1 w - - 0 24[/fen]

24. Rc4 Nd5 25. e4 Bxh2+ 26. Kxh2 Ne7 27. Kg3 Nfg6 28. f4 Nf8
29. Rc7 Nfg6 30. Bb2 h5 31. e5 h4+ 32. Kg4 Nf8 33. Ba3 Nfg6 34. Bd3 b5
35. Bxb5

Below we have 35 and a half moves completed. (Black to move)
We have reached an amazing position folks!
Black is now in a "Zugzwang"!
Whatever move he makes... loses something for him!

[fen]2b5/2R1nkp1/4p1n1/1B2P3/5PKp/B7/6P1/8 b - - 0 35[/fen]

35...Ba6 36. Bxa6

Below we have 36 and a half moves completed. (Black to move)
Due to the Zugzwang that MCC was in, he just gave away his bishop for free and he is still in a Zugzwang!
Undertaker this is simply amazing!!!

[fen]8/2R1nkp1/B3p1n1/4P3/5PKp/B7/6P1/8 b - - 0 36[/fen]

Undertaker where are you going?
Folks Undertaker has just left the announcer's table and is headed for the ring.

He picks up Mephisto Chess Challenger not even bothering to unplug the boy and he tosses it into the casket!
What a change of events!

and Team Radio Shack is jumping for glee back behind the ropes!
Wait... People are throwing their sodas into the casket also!
There is pandemonium at ringside folks!

This reminds of that Patriots - N.Y. Jets game where the Patriot fans
started throwing snowballs at the Jets players! LOL

For The Undertaker this is LWSteve...
See ya all next time on Masterpiece Theater!!!!!!

The Chess Challenger team is crying foul and the fans demand a rematch with the CC as White. The CC team is claiming that the RS 2200X had heavier gloves & maybe even a little plaster finger padding with its slightly better Elo, but more particularly the larger ROM & much larger Book that gave it an advantage in Round 1 (the opening) coming out of the White corner.

The CC team also claims the its allegedly better win/loss record is an irrelevant aberration used by money-grubbing swindlers behind the scenes to screw the CC by giving it Black!

I see we have a Mephisto Chess Challenger following in this forum. :D

Here are those two teams that just played and their draws...

Since Mephisto Chess Challenger is player #6 of 51 contestants
and the 2200X is player #34 of 51 contestants

looking at the spreadsheet for player #6 we see
6 v 7 - - 8 v 6 - - 6 v 9 - - 10 v 6 - - 6 v 11 - - 12 v 6 - - 6 v 13 - - 14 v 6
6 v 15 - - 16 v 6 - - 6 v 17 - - 18 v 6 - - 6 v 19 - - 20 v 6 - - 6 v 21
22 v 6 - - 6 v 23 - - 24 v 6 - - 6 v 25 - - 26 v 6 - - 6 v 27 - - 28 v 6
6 v 29 - - 30 v 6 - - 6 v 31 - - 32 v 6 - - 6 v 33 - - 34 v 6 etc.

34 v 6 - - - means 34 gets white
The first number gets white

So MCC gets white against all odd numbered teams
follow me?

Here are the computers that MCC gets white against...
#1 Fidelity Gambit
#3 Fidelity Excel 68000
#5 Mephisto Talking Chess Academy
#7 Novag Zircon II
#9 Novag Diamond
#11 Mephisto Master Chess
#13 Novag Obsidian
#15 Saitek Cougar
#17 Fidelity Excel 68000 Mach II Model 6097
#19 Saitek Centurion
#21 Fidelity Par Excellence
#23 CXG Super Crown
#25 Radio Shack 2150L
#27 Novag Super Forte C
#29 Saitek Turbo Adv. Trainer
#31 Radio Shack 2150
#33 Novag Super Forte B
#35 Novag Diamond II
#37 Fidelity Designer 1500
#39 Fidelity Designer 2000
#41 Saitek Conquistador
#43 Excalibur - Alexandra the Great
#45 Excalibur - Ivan
#47 Excalibur - Ivan II
#49 Novag Constellation 3.6 (has withdrawn)
#51 Mephisto Berlin 68000

MCC has already beaten one of my favorite computers Novag Diamond and he got white in so doing - The game is posted in this thread.

MCC also gets white against Novag Diamond II #35 I see...
Good luck because I hope Diamond II with the black pieces puts an a$$ kickin on your MCC Dave! hehehe

But now lets suppose MCC does get lucky and beats Diamond II

Then MCC would then get the black pieces against Novag Star Diamond aka the Stud Muffin!
And then MCC will need an extra square and an extra queen in order to win that game!

That was a big loss for MCC. Because only the top 5 computers go to the playoffs.
If MCC can beat Citrine with the black pieces then he might be able to make it in. That will be the big game for him.

Look Dave at all the "Big Wigs" that MCC gets white against!

I will get Diamond II and MCC matched up here in a week or so.

Pom Pom's for Mephisto Chess Challenger available on EBAY regards, LOL

We have received protests from the legal Departments of all of the various computer manufacturers whose computers are represented in this event
the affidavits filed suggest that All of These stats, crosstables ,summaries embellishments and Excel spread sheets are meaningless without seeing all of the actual games for all 50 computers participating in this event
as a result ..the entire tournament has been called into question
we need the PGN files for each and every game
each and every computer..each and every round

Where's The Beef Regards?
