Enjoying this long-running tournament...

Steve said this:
The SSDF rates them this way(after 100 Elo rating reduction calibration in the year 2000)
What's this? Please elaborate...

SirDave wrote:The Mephisto Chess Challenger team is now acutely aware that the MCC has been set up as a stooge, a flunky, a mark and a patsy. Nothing more than an easy way to pad others' win column.

The Novag Diamond II's handlers indulged in major trash-talking after the match: 'Whose yer daddy!, Are you sure you're a Mephisto?" and the like. The MCC trainer responded with: 'My guy sold for less than $50 and your boy goes for $1000 and it took 57 moves to beat my guy?'
Trash Talking is allowed in this league, as long as there is no profanity.
Section 4 - Chapter 2 - Paragraph 1
and just like in the NBA... The great ones did it... Jordan, Bird etc.
And Diamond II is obviously a great one.

As far as who is Diamond II 's Daddy? Answer => Star Diamond
Who is Diamond II's wife? Answer => Sapphire II

We are thinking of maybe getting a "B" League together some time in the future.

This new league will be known as the "panty waist" division.

The board is currently reviewing all options.

Regards,
The Commissioner

In the year 2000 ..a year that will live in Infamy..the SSDF reduced the ratings of all of the chess computers on their rating lists to somehow calibrate to human ratings
i dont know all of the mechanics and statistics involved
it resulted in a 100 pt reduction across the board
i remember quite well the furor this reduction caused amongst collectors worldwide
there were massive protests in the streets..cries for an Uprising and even calls for a Jihad from more militant collectors

anyway..today ..collectors "workaround" this reduction ..and when quoting SSDF ratings they generally add 100 Pts to the ratings shown on the SSDF list

here is an example of a side by side comparison of the effect of the SSDF calibration

Just Say No To Ratings Calibration Regards

(And no fooling with the word(s) hate-on...).
Dave & everybody,

After this tournament is over, my next tournament will be a "Fight to The Death" tournament

MY top 20 computers only will get invites.

A round robin tournament "first to 2 points" wins! (draws = .5)

Of course Mephisto Chess Challenger and the Radio Shack 2200X
have already received their invites.

There will be "new blood" in this tournament also.
I will not say at this time what the "new blood" will be. Other than there will be "new blood" 8)

Rules...
3 min. average response for everybody!
There will be no early plug pulling! (except when one computer is getting slaughtered)
All computers will fight to the death! (some games may go 120 moves, who knows)
The Fifty-Move Rule will be strictly enforced.
All games will be posted in this forum for everybody to see.
If you know what an "ultimate cheeseburger" is... then this will be the "ultimate tournament". 8)

Everything is not completely ironed out yet but you guys can see whats coming down the line.

Dave, Mephisto Chess Challenger will get his chance for revenge against the 2200X in this tourney.

In my current tournament everybody has played 10 or more games.
A complete update later this week.

"Fight to The Death" Regards 8)

LWSteve wrote:Good Evening Chess Fans and Welcome to the Tostitos SirDave Bowl

We are “live” at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nevada for this heavyweight matchup between…

Mephisto Chess Challenger (elo 2022) - - - White
and
Novag Diamond II (elo 2172) - - - Black

But first things first, lets go to the “tale of the tape”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mephisto Chess Challenger - yr. 2004
Record - 7 wins - 2 loses - 0 draws
elo 2022
freq. - 10 MHz
processor => 8 bit - H8
RAM - 32 KB (No Hash Tables)
ROM - 1 KB
opening library - 6,000 positions
---------------------------------------------------
Novag Diamond II - yr. 1997
Record - 7 wins - 0 loses - 3 draws
elo - 2172
freq. - 32 MHz
processor => 8 bit - - H8/325 Singlechip HD6433258
RAM - 129 KB of which 118 KB is for Hash Tables
ROM - 160 KB
opening library - 123,000 positions
can see up to 28 half moves ahead
-----------------------------------------------

I'm joined right now by Bruce Pandolfini.

Bruce, here in Vegas the oddsmakers have Diamond II a 5 to 1 favorite.
Have you already made a wager on this fight?

I sure have Steve!
I did go to the Race & Sports Book window this morning here at the MGM.
I bet $10 on Mephisto Chess Challenger.

Bruce, if you win what are you going to do with your $50 bucks?

Steve, I’m going to buy myself a Fidelity Chess Challenger 8 on EBAY.

Then Queeg is going to modify my CC8 for me, installing a 20 MHz quartz oscillator.
Then my Fidelity CC8, even with its tiny opening library, will be able to make “Chopped Liver” out of Steve B’s TASC R30

There you have it folks!
Bruce Pandolfini has made a $10 bet on Mephisto Chess Challenger here at the MGM Grand and with it comes dreams of R30 chopped liver!

Bruce Good Luck!
Hope to see your Fidelity CC8 on Masterpiece Theater real soon.
Now lets go down to Tabletop Side and get this one underway.

1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 g5 4. Be2 Nc6

Below we have 4 full moves completed.
MCC has played the King's Gambit against "The 8 bit King" himself.
and for his 4th move MCC had no move in his opening library.
MCC spent aprox. 3 minutes on his 4th move and comes up with 4.Be2
and even 4.Be2 though it looks like a decent developing move is not in any GM's opening library.
Folks we are already in unchartered waters!

[fen]r1bqkbnr/pppp1p1p/2n5/6p1/4Pp2/5N2/PPPPB1PP/RNBQK2R w KQkq - 0 5[/fen]

5. O-O Bg7 6. Nc3 Nd4

Below we have 6 full moves completed.
Diamond II has already posted his knight on d4
MCC is just going to have to "live with it" being there for a while.
It would not be advisable for him to swap it out.
This is getting very interesting already folks!

[fen]r1bqk1nr/pppp1pbp/8/6p1/3nPp2/2N2N2/PPPPB1PP/R1BQ1RK1 w kq - 0 7[/fen]

7. Nxd4 Bxd4+ 8. Kh1 Nf6

Below we have 8 full moves completed.
MCC has gotten rid of that black knight that was posted on d4, but now his king has been driven into the corner!
Bruce, just look at the black squares that Diamond II controls in the MCC camp.

The 4th of July may be over Steve, but Diamond II is definitely looking for some BarBe Q'd white meat here!

[fen]r1bqk2r/pppp1p1p/5n2/6p1/3bPp2/2N5/PPPPB1PP/R1BQ1R1K w kq - 0 9[/fen]

9. Bf3 d6 10. d3 O-O 11. Nb5 Bb6 12. b3 Bd7 13. Nc3 Qe7 14. a4 Qe5

Below we have 14 full moves completed.
MCC has stabilized the position for now.
It looks like Diamond II is preparing g4 here!

[fen]r4rk1/pppb1p1p/1b1p1n2/4q1p1/P3Pp2/1PNP1B2/2P3PP/R1BQ1R1K w - - 0 15[/fen]

15. Bb2 g4 16. Be2 Bd4

Below we have 16 full moves completed.
g4 has been played.
Diamond II is threatening to win a piece!
But as I have said before... The Diamonds have been programmed to attack with knights and their queen in tandom.
Bruce, the Novag Diamond computers are always very predictable!

Its one thing to be able to predict things Steve, but can MCC stop what he see's coming?

[fen]r4rk1/pppb1p1p/3p1n2/4q3/P2bPpp1/1PNP4/1BP1B1PP/R2Q1R1K w - - 0 17[/fen]

17. a5 Bxc3 18. d4 Qh5 19. Bxc3 Nxe4

Below we have 19 full moves completed.
Diamond II is up material Bruce.

Steve, Diamond II is about ready to come down the Alley with Salley.
That black queen looks hungry!
Diamond II also has Ng3+ at his disposal.
Can MCC hold on?

[fen]r4rk1/pppb1p1p/3p4/P6q/3Pnpp1/1PB5/2P1B1PP/R2Q1R1K w - - 0 20[/fen]

20. Be1 Ng3+ 21. Bxg3 fxg3

Below we have 21 full moves completed.
MCC is almost in another "Zugzwang"!
22. h3 is MCC's only move here. Anything else leads to forced mates.
Then we expect Diamond II will play f5

[fen]r4rk1/pppb1p1p/3p4/P6q/3P2p1/1P4p1/2P1B1PP/R2Q1R1K w - - 0 22[/fen]

22. h3 Qh4

Below we have 22 full moves completed.
h3 was of course played by MCC.
But Diamond II Bruce has played 22...Qh4 instead of f5

This was just a pathetic move by Diamond II.
Steve, I watched this game unfold from the start, on my lap top, using Fritz 13.
Practically everyone of Diamond II’s moves were in Fritz’s top 3 move recommendations up until that freakish 22nd move that Diamond II just made.
He has just let MCC back into this thing!
Fritz has Diamond II only leading now by a 1.09 margin.

[fen]r4rk1/pppb1p1p/3p4/P7/3P2pq/1P4pP/2P1B1P1/R2Q1R1K w - - 0 23[/fen]

23. Bxg4 Bxg4 24. Qxg4+ Qxg4 25. hxg4 Rfe8

Below we have 25 full moves completed.
After some exchanges we are now going into an end game battle.
Diamond II running at 32 MHz with hashtables will have a huge advantage from here on out!

[fen]r3r1k1/ppp2p1p/3p4/P7/3P2P1/1P4p1/2P3P1/R4R1K w - - 0 26[/fen]

36. Kh1 Rf2 37. Rc1 Rfe2

Below we have 37 full moves completed.
MCC is slowly getting squeezed to death here Bruce.

Yes Steve, its the ol Boa Constrictor strategy being used by Diamond II.
All you can do if you're MCC is to get out the Mephisto prayer book.

[fen]5k2/p1p1rp1p/2Rp4/3P4/1PP3P1/6p1/4r1P1/2R4K w - - 0 38[/fen]

43. Rab1 a6 44. Ra1 f6 45. Rab1 Kd7 46. Ra1 Kc8

Below we have 46 full moves completed.
Look at the strategy being employed by Diamond II right now!
Bruce, Diamond II 's king is on a trek over to... it looks like b7.
Thats amazing! Diamond II has a mind of its own!

Steve, what do expect from a dedicated chess computer who plays Senior Master level chess all the time!
And then people wonder why these Novag Diamond's in mint condition go for around 1K on EBAY. Well now you know why!

[fen]2k5/2p4p/p2p1p2/3P4/1PPr4/6p1/3r2P1/R1R3K1 w - - 0 47[/fen]

47. Rab1 Kb7

Below we have 47 full moves completed.
The trek of Diamond II 's king is now complete!
Its right where he wants it now, on b7 to guard his "a" pawn.

Steve, Charlie Daniels once sang “He was in a bind 'cos he was way behind and he was willin' to make a deal.”

Whutch ya think?
Bruce there will be no deals! That Mephisto Clown of yours is going down!
And you can kiss yer 10 Lire chow! chow! also.

[fen]8/1kp4p/p2p1p2/3P4/1PPr4/6p1/3r2P1/1RR3K1 w - - 0 48[/fen]

48. Ra1 Rb2 49. Rc3 Rxb4 50. Rac1 Kb6 51. Rxg3 Rbxc4 52. Rxc4 Rxc4
53. Rf3 a5

Below we have 53 full moves completed.
Bruce, if MCC doesn’t resign soon this thing is going to turn into a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
And instead of floats with balloons there will be black pawns marching everywhere!

[fen]8/2p4p/1k1p1p2/p2P4/2r5/5R2/6P1/6K1 w - - 0 54[/fen]

54. Rxf6 Rd4 55. Rf5 a4 56. Kh2 a3 57. Rf2 Rxd5

Below we have 57 full moves completed.
Wait... Frans Morsch in the MCC corner has finally thrown in the towel.
The man in charge Joe Cortez has finally stopped this fight!

[fen]8/2p4p/1k1p4/3r4/8/p7/5RPK/8 w - - 0 58[/fen]

Well Bruce that was quite a fight!
And since you are 10 Lire lighter in the wallet right now...
Where on the strip are you going to eat dinner tonight?

Steve, I think I will try a place over by Caesars Palace.
Its called Guido’s Italian greasy spoon. LOL

For Bruce Pandolfini I'm LWSteve
See y'all next time!!!!!!!!!!!

and God Bless the Novag Diamond II 8)
As strange it may seem , I still think that you will need to complete these games till the very end...............................

Good Morning Chess Fans!

My promoter Bruce Pandolfini has just informed me of an upcoming heavyweight fight.

This coming Wednesday 7/17

Radio Shack 2250XL (white pieces)
vs
Novag Diamond II - "The Great One" - - - (black pieces)

At the weigh in yesterday the trash talking got out of control.

The 2250XL said that Diamond II was "soft"!

Diamond II then said to the 2250XL that he was not programmed by Morsch or by Kaplan but that he was programmed by Pee Wee Herman!

After this trash talking between the two, they had to be separated by bubble wrap.

Folks this one could get nasty!

This coming Wed. night... Don't miss it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)

the undefeated and greatest 8 bit chess computer of all time...
Novag Diamond II

I allways ask myself why Diamond II/Sapphire II it is allways behind in rating from Diamond/Sapphire.

nonsense regards
Ricardo
The Diamond II/Sapphire II are behind Diamond/Sapphire in the Wiki ratings because Wiki ratings are not that accurate! Its that simple!

Wiki had Excalibur Igor with an 1845 elo rating for a long time.
In my tournament Igor demolished Mephisto Berlin 68000 (elo 2183)

My ratings are a lot more accurate than Wiki.

LWSteve
While I agree with you that Wiki Ratings are not accurate .One game does not prove anything . Just take a look at the 20 game matches that SSDF does and in some cases one computer is ahead by a lot of games before being demolished at the end .I am sure that Mephisto Berlin would win say a 6 game match against Igor at 40 moves in 2 hours.......
maybe not my IGOR 24 MHZ !!
look at his last testing game attempt game #3 Amazing results that have yet to be tallied. unfortunate he has no 40/4 to compensate for double speed.

Folks I just got off the phone with my promoter Bruce P.

An agreement with Queeg has just been reached.

Bruce has just lined up a fight, set for early August between Queeg's Excalibur Igor 6-1-3 and Novag Diamond II "The Great One"

Bruce also informed me that the "cut man" & "trainer" for Excalibur Igor that evening Queegmeister, he will be in Igor's corner during the fight!
We should be able to set up some interviews with Queeg also.

Queeg's Igor has already beaten up Mephisto Berlin 68000 and now Igor wants "a piece of" Diamond II.
Hey no problem... Bruce has the fight set for early August here on the Fight Channel.

WOW what a lineup of fights we have coming up for you guys!

If Ric Flair was here right now you know what he would say! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Stay tuned!!!!!!!!!!

Sir,

Fighters on steroids are not allowed in the tournament.

So you can take yer soldering iron that you bought at K-Mart and stick it where the sun don't shine.

Your fighter has already agreed to fight Diamond II in early August.

It will happen!

Cheers

Why the heck didn't they just make a unit stock with 24 mhz ? Would've easily increased their appeal to the aspiring stronger players - maybe modeled like the Karpov 2294 - or just leave the IGOR a toy and juice up the GM to 24 - no brainer ..........

Maybe that is the Karpov !! Oh well - it seems like it's a "Novag" - opinions ?

Does anyone have the Karpov to test ?

Q :?
