Q - I'm right here

My strategy is to come up with lists and then go from there.
The problem is that the USCF website will only go back 20 to 25 years
and in some cases only 7 years.

I figured my book...
The Best of Chess Life and Review vol.2 1960 - 1988 by Bruce Pandolfini (which is a fabulous book by the way)
would help out some.
It really didn't
Although it does list the top 50 chess players in America in 1972 on page 307
Queeg what was your USCF rating in 1972? 8)

Maybe then......

Q

OK 6 names for you:

Popovych
Zaltsman
Biyiasas
Ghizdavu
Dlugy
Lein

First one is my first choice, assuming he is not dead! :P

ooops might have to remove Popovych since he played Fischer  once and lost!

The key to this whole thing is that Q says he knew V. Pupols around 1997 to 1999 aprox. And Q says he talked to VP back then.

V. Pupols lived here in the Seattle area and played in almost every USCF tournament in the state back then. (and he still does)

Its possible Q and myself entered the same tournament in WA state back in the late 1990's together.

Both VP and myself were in several tournaments together back then.

I need more time to go back thru my old issues of NW Chess.

Well since Q states that he comes from Russia, his name would likely have to sound Russian. Besides Pupols played out of state as well I see he played in Chicago in 1997.

Now the question to Q. Did you play in Chicago in 1997 or did you ever play in the Keres Memorial?

The Problem with Q's clues is that they are never totally accurate
only slightly so
yes he mentions he hails from Russia
well..Alaska is close to Russia
he could come from there
after all...

Thank You for all the attention , I don't think I really deserve it -

VP played in other states in the 90's - try checking those too

Maxim is far too young to be me.

I told you I WAS dead. LOL

The rating supplements that I looked at through your links are not complete and they only go back so far...

maybe I am not looking at the right one - I will check them again

But as in childhood game you would be warm getting warmer .... and closer than I might want to admit.

It seemed I was missing from a list that I should have been included - the eyesight - the eyesight.

Don't forget to consider the Chess Coach aspect.

I never played in Washington with VP or LWSTEVE

Hey, I don't know you guys real names -

You will eventually get it. If you haven't already. I must admit to purposely shrouding the issue. I will slip up and give you a famous game or position just bide your time - time is on YOUR side not mine.

Balding away regards,

Ok last attempt!

Candidates

Orest Popovych - B. 1933 FIDE Master - FIDE 2244
Vitaly F Zaltsman - B. 1941 International Master - FIDE 2445

Based on your clues so far I would keep the above two as candidates. Zaltsman favorite but only because Popovych played Fischer once and you indicated that you never played him.

A Pity

Anatoly Yakovlevich Lein - B. 1931 Grand Master - FIDE 2233 Grand Master

Lein is a shame and I wish it was Lein one time 1st place in the US Championship and tied first in the World Open. Also he has played most of the Russian greats Tal, Smyslov, Brontstein and others.

Into the Dumpster

Peter Biyiasas - B. 1950 Grand Master - FIDE 2450 Grand Master
Dumitru Ghizdavu - B. 1949 International Master - FIDE 2415 Romanian
Maxim Dlugy - B. 1966 Grand Master - FIDE - FIDE 2524 Too Young
Sergey Kudrin - B. 1959 Grand Master - FIDE 2523 Grand Master
Dmitry Gurevich - B. 1956 - Grand Master - FIDE 2492 Grand Master
Roman Dzindzichashvili - B. 1944 Grand Master - FIDE 2550 Grand Master
Georgi Orlov - B. 1964 - International Master - FIDE 2478 Too Young

These I have to dump as either being Grand Masters, too young or not Russian.

When did I say I did NOT play Fischer ? I said , I believe , that I did not BEAT the Fischer personality in XBOX Chessmaster.

Yes I played Fischer and of course I lost .

If I said , I did not play Bobby , I must have been loopy - it was actually a pretty decent contest !! And I DID play some of the great players you mentioned - we all played chess together as children and young men. I am not sure about the number of rated games I had with each. I can go through my record to see.

Also, I took a couple lessons from Bobby at my friends house - Bobby stayed with my friend the late Dr. Erich Marchand and that is where we talked a bit - I also said that Fischer was not the sociable type - but I'm sure you knew that - he did not want to make much conversation but we discussed how the (other) Russians were cheating him. I confirmed his suspicions and told him many things about the Soviets - he really did not need any convincing.

Dr Marchand was a very dear friend of mine for many years. He had such a depression in his latter years - he tried every Anti-depressant and nothing worked. Very sad to see him go that way. Erich played Bobby twice I believe - losing both. Erich beat Larry Christiansen - I think it was a Benko gambit by Larry with Black.

Erich and I had many discussions about everything from openings to politics , I ate meals that his wife Dorothy cooked. They were both avid professional blackjack players and Dr. Marchand wore disguises to play in casinos he was banned from for counting cards ! He claimed his wife was better than he was !

Queeg,

The only Russian GM I ever played was Sergey Kudrin. (born in 1959)
He told me he was one of Spassky's best friends.
One of his best games he told me, was when he beat Nigel Short.

I was black against Sergey and I played the Pirc Defense against his e4.
(I should have played the Sicilian)

Man, I got crushed in about 38 moves if I remember.

Get crushed by a GM, thats how you get better. :D

Well does that mean it's Popovych? Zaltsman shows no record of having played Fischer in an official capacity. Should Zaltsman be removed?

At a stretch Andrew Karlkins could also be added as Latvian heritage, but that would be a stretch since Erik Karlkins moved to the West shortly after the 2nd world war so Russian player connections would be out of the question ie. to have first hand experience of how they would planned for Fischer. With Karlkins that would be just heresay.

Can't be Lein right since you have more then once confirmed that you never had Grand Master status?

Wow, I remember Onkel Vic back from my tournament days! He had a most unusual style, and his personality could fill a room.

Say, Q, were any of your games against Pupols the Latvian Gambit? I'd be obliged if you could post one of your games with him.

Hi

The Mephisto 16 Bit Vancouver is WORKING !! Finally.

I have played 2 'serious" games at g/60 and both ended in a draw with myself the aggressor in both games. Somehow the Vancouver managed to hold me to a draw , while I was up a pawn in game one. The second game saw me sacrificing a full Rook in the opening with tactics blazing - the Mephisto managed to get its feet on the ground and whittle the position into a draw with me having 2 pawns and a Knight for a rook. But I could make no further progress.

I was able to Checkmate Citrine with this line. (I had Black)

I guess it's a good result - the games were interesting and sharp - with Mephisto able to just barely neutralize my advantages in the end.

I am just happy it WORKS !! I may post the second game seeing the amazing sharp play might interest the gang. I was a little disappointed that I could not convert to a win although the Mephisto put up a hell of a fight to stave off defeat.

Queeg :D
