Doubling up of live games

Post by Eric Wainwright »

I'm having a problem with the doubling up of live games. After I open a remote pgn file and leave my computer running, when I return I find duplicate games in the Game Explore (see screenshot). This has happened on a number of occasions and with different pgn files. Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm using HCE 1.6 running on Mac OS 10.8.4.

Thanks, -Eric

Just noticed that the player names in the first set are different from the second set. Maybe that's a clue.

Yes the names have changed and that is the reason. If you just reopen the URL that will be resolved.

Hmm, this is strange! I restarted HCE, reloaded the URL and the problem is still happening after a new live game has been added. I looked into the remote PGN file and there are no occurrences of player abbreviations in the file. Could the merge routine in HCE be doing something to the player names?

We do not remove old games while the Live remote PGN tab remains open. This allows games to accumulate in tournaments from round to round especially as many people keep HCE open running for days and weeks.

PGNs get updated in all sorts of ways remotely and we err on the side of safety, imagine if the latest update had an error in it, we would not want to be removing games from the list automatically.

This only happens if the remote PGN has player name changes between updates, the old games are not removed in case there are players with the same name or other differences.

If you prefer to not see these older remote games, simply choosing Open URL... again and it will only show the current games and there will not be any repeat games with different names.
Best wishes,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your helpful reply. That explains a lot.

There still is something fishy going on with the pgn file on your website: http://www.hiarcs.biz:8300/wcc2013.pgn. I downloaded the file again and it had only the last game from the tournament and the player's names had country codes appended this time.

This file is correct and when you look at it in HIARCS Chess Explorer it shows you the clock times for each move of each player during the game.
Best wishes,
Mark
