Apologies to Hans and the HIARCS team for messing up the opening choices in round 3 and almost blowing our chances in one fell swoop  . It was totally my fault and I should also apologise to HIARCS as well for giving it a completely lost position straight out of book! - I was astonished it manged to draw it in the end.

So all is not lost, but a lesson has been learned at a cost.
Best wishes,
Mark

3/4 despite book choice mistake is a good start

Post by Eric Hallsworth »

Hi Mark, Harvey, and Hans!

It looks to me like 3/4 despite a bad book choice in round 3 is a good start! Amazing to save that game, a pat on the back for the engine!

I know we have other top engines still to play against, but I'm optimistic!!

Cheers - Eric

Sadly CB have refused to take the live relay provided by DGT.

Their sys op, Holger, said:
'after the rybka-hunt things for me no point to cover it.'
Their website person said:
[19:50:29] I have an opiniuon, so yes, the word crap is my opinion. The fact is that this relay is not an isolated thing, it relates to a serious controversy.
[19:51:04] so their reply is not "screw Harv". It is "screw the ICGA"
There are more reasonable people at CB here an email from the CEO:
We have no hostile feeling towards the ICGA, it is simply not a high-priority at the moment.

Best, Matthias

Diary

Post by Hans van der Zijden »

Monday november 21
For the third consecutive day Holland is almost completely covered with fog. That means more traffic jams. So I leave 2 hours and 24 minutes before round 5 starts to avoid them. It is pretty quiet the first half of the journey, so I drive slowly. But in the second half it is getting more and more busy and by the time I reach the outskirts of Tilburg, things really go slow. It has taken almost 2 hours.

Our opponent is Woodpusher. Mark and Harvey are very afraid of this opponent and decide to do some bookpreparation. 1.b3 and 3.g3 throws Woodpusher quickly out of book. It seems to work really well when our opponent makes a 3 ply piecelosing move. That can’t be. Even my tired mind sees it. I check Woodpusher’s GUI (an ugly one) and see that the position does not match the one on the board. Programmer John Hamlen played the wrong piece 5 moves ago. We restart after the correct move. But also now it doesn’t take too long before Hiarcs has reached a winning position and John resignes.

After the tri-ennial meeting in between the two rounds of the day, I had scheduled an interview with David Levy because I have more time now Hiarcs has a bye. I put two chairs in direct view of the camcorder that sends a livestream to the internet. That way viewers don’t have to watch an empty wall for some time. My questions about the Rybka/ICGA case are opening David’s eyes and he decides to give the worldtitles back to Rajlich. Then I woke up.

I leave early for The Hague because it is my chessnight. I have to do the pairing, but I feel too tired to play myself. Better go home, write this and rest. Tomorrow is a big day with Shredder and Pandix at the other side of the board.
Never do something today, that someone else can do tomorrow. (Confusedius)

Considering HIARCS, Junior and Shredder are marketed by Chessbase and have been long time stable mates of Fritz then their decision here based solely on events surrounding one of their marketed items must be seen as disappointing inasmuch as they are not supporting products that they sell. Seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot by not taking advantage of the opportunity to promote these popular chess engines.

I do not recall Rybka's exclusion from participating in the Kramnik versus chess engine match that resulted in Deep Fritz representing the field being an issue for Chessbase at the time so why now?

Misjudgement in my opinion.
