Two hard fought R-P draws in the 8th round... both with pawns threatening to promote on b7! Junior/Shredder is one of the epic rivalries in chess, akin to Kasparov/Karpov. It is all down to the final Hiarcs-Junior game tomorrow.

Any word on the bizarre loss of Pandix to The Baron in round 7? Was it a crash, bug, book corruption, transcription mistake, or fingerfehler?

According to Gyula the move should not have been played and was certainly not entered into the book. He figured it may have been a strange transposition bug (either in the book or the book-code) so he played the next rounds with the Arena book transposition feature off.

Wednesday november 23
The decisive last round of the WCCC. Hiarcs reaches a Junior style of opening. That must be why Junior is so unhappy (0.70 for white). Hiarcs stays a few moves longer in book and only shows 0.30 out of book. Junior has to give rook for bishop and pawn, but the open position of Hiarcs’ king and the bishoppair for Junior is enough compensation. This draw means that Shredder can tie for first place, but no one wants a play-off, so we are all (except Stefan) supporting Jonny. Jonny shows 0.00 in the eval, much to Amir’s surprise. Johannes explains that Jonny sees a rookending in the PV and all rookendings are draws. When Shredder is also convinced they share the point. So Junior is worldchampion and Hiarcs and Shredder tie for second place.

Now that there are no play-offs the blitz tournament can start earlier. There are five that want to compete, but we manage to pursuade John Hamlen (Woodpusher) to participate also. He has to enter the moves with the keyboard, which means he can only give his program a fraction of the time which we have on the external clock. Despite some good openings against Jonny and Hiarcs where he has a slightly better position in the middlegame, Woodpusher is of course no match for the top programs. He loses all 10 games. Hiarcs uses remote desktop to connect to the 12-core machine. For speedchess we can’t use that because the graphics are simply not fast enough. So we play on my quad laptop. Jonny still uses the 800 processors and Johannes is also a very fast operator. No wonder he wins the blitz tournament by a huge margin. Shredder is second and Hiarcs third. Hiarcs only loses the 2 round match against Pandix ½-1½. We have 2 draws against Jonny and a win and a loss against Shredder and Junior.

Harvey arrived this morning for a 2 day stay. He offers me to do the first round of tomorrows software tournament. Gives me 2 more hours of sleep. I gladly accept, but then we hear that Hiarcs has the bye in the first round. Maybe Harvey can do the second round then. Gives me even more time to sleep. And I really need it. On the way back I notice already quickly that I cannot stay awake. I decide to stop at the first gasstation to freshen up. I see a sign “gasstation 1500 meters” and I nod off exactly at the moment when I have to take the exit. The next station is 19 kilometers further. I manage to stay awake, which is not easy if you forgot to take some water with you to throw in your face. The rest of the trip goes well. I am refreshed, get a call (difficult to fall asleep in a conversation) and I took something to eat. I decide to have a look into traveling by train tomorrow.
Never do something today, that someone else can do tomorrow. (Confusedius)

Hans's Diary update

Tuesday november 24
I got up just before round 1 and decide to watch my opponents. To my big surprise I see Hiarcs playing against Jonnny. I thought we had a bye. A phonecall to Harvey explained it. After I left the TD paired again for whatever reason. Now we have the bye in round 3. "I can do the second round as well", Harvey suggested. "But then I will come to Tilburg for just one round", I stammered. "That's right, better take the day off then".

Hiarcs had some trouble getting used to Harvey operating and disappointingly can not beat Jonny without its massive 800-cores. But the next 2 games it recognizes the usual operator and wins the games against Junior and Pandix. I planned to spend the evening watching tv and falling asleep a lot, but my brother asks me to come play a game of chess. He had a late cancellation and now our team was 1 man short. I surprise myself by winning.

Harvey will still be around the first game of tomorrow, so if I need some more rest.... I will see how I feel in the morning.

Hiarcs wins the World Computer Software Championship 2011 in Tillburg. More details later but a big thanks to Hans for operating. This was played on = hardware for everyone in an attempt to find who had the best software rather than software combined with whatever hardware you can find.

here is the final game. Junior was 2nd. So it is a one and 2 for produts available from www.Hiarcs.com.
