Playing against Hiarcs

Post by Dirtalot »

If i were to play a game against Hiarcs at a set ELO and a time control of 5 secs per move. would it play stronger at that same ELO if i were to play a G90?
In other words.....do the length of time you give the computer to think affect it's strength despite not changing the ELO value?
Many thanks

Time you attribute to an human change his/her force greatly. Time you attribute to a computer change its force slightly.

So... If you play at 1800 and you set the computer to 1800, you will probably lose in a very fast game and you will probably win in a very long time game.

Also, Hiarcs will play fast in down-rated levels, even if you give it a lot of time.

Thanks, the reason I ask was that I played a 90min + 30 secs game against hiarcs at the Lowest elo setting and it still played fairly strong.....much stronger then shredder 12 ( I normally play shredder at around 1200 elo)

You can set Hiarcs as low as 750. Rating is an average, like humans, computers can do a game stronger than average and play wrong in the next game. Usually I find the ratings accurate, anyway I almost never play long standard games. Maybe you want to show the game? Here goes the last one I played:

[Event "2 12 rated"]

Hmm, the issue is I've played quite a lot of games with hiarcs at 750 elo, and I felt it was stronger than shredder at 1200! That's a big difference! Online my rating is around 1200 also. When I get home I shall post one of the games. May be hiarcs has a different style of play and I'm just not used to it.

Dirtalot,

The ELO rating of a computer assumes that its opponents are using the same time controls. So, a 2,000 ELO rated computer will play at the same rating against an opponent in a 5 minute game as it does in a 60 minute game, assuming a linear increase in strength for each. However, the level of play in the 60 minute game will be much higher than the level of play the 5 minute game, even though the ELO ratings will be the same.

I hope this helps,

-Eric W.

P.S. If you’re judging the relative strengths of two different computers through their play, just make sure you use the same time controls in all of your games.
