Thanks for posting Nick! Near and dear to my heart, as an Atari 800 was my first PC. My all time favorite game on that platform was M.U.L.E.

You know that is one game in the old days I had always wanted to try out and I had never gotten around to playing it.

Maybe I will buy it someday and check it out.

I played a second game between Atari 600XL Parker Chess against Excalibur LCD Chess Model 375-1.

[Event "?"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "2014.09.15"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Atari 600XL Parker Chess, LV 5."]
[Black "Excalibur LCD Chess Mod. 375, LV 21."]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[PlyCount "112"]

1. d4 d5 2. c4 dxc4 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. e3 Bg4 {Atari 600XL Parker Chess out of book}
5. Bxc4 e6 6. Nc3 {Excalibur LCD Chess Model 375-1 out of book} Bxf3 7. Qxf3 c6
8. Bd2 Bd6 9. O-O O-O 10. g3 Nbd7 11. Ne4 Nxe4 12. Qxe4 Nf6 13. Qc2 e5 14. Qf5
g6 15. Qh3 exd4 16. exd4 b5 17. Bb3 Re8 18. Rfc1 Qc8 19. Qh4 Ng4 20. Qg5 Be7
21. Qf4 Nf6 22. Rc2 Rd8 23. Rac1 Qg4 24. Qe5 Qe4 25. Qxe4 Nxe4 26. Be3 Bf6 27.
Rxc6 Bxd4 28. Bxd4 Rxd4 29. f3 Nd6 30. R1c2 Kf8 31. Rc7 Rd1+ 32. Kg2 h6 33. Re2
Rd4 34. Rec2 Rd1 35. h3 a6 36. Re2 Rd4 37. Rc6 a5 38. a3 Re8 39. Rxe8+ Kxe8 40.
Rc2 a4 41. Re2+ Kd7 42. Bc2 Nc4 43. Be4 f5 44. Bb1 Rd1 45. Ba2 Kd6 46. Bxc4
bxc4 47. g4 f4 48. Kf2 Kd5 49. Rc2 Rh1 50. Rd2+ Kc5 51. Kg2 Rc1 52. Rf2 g5 53.
Rf1 Rc2+ 54. Rf2 Rc1 55. Rf1 Rc2+ 56. Rf2 Rc1 1/2-1/2

This time the game was a draw. In the end fortunate for Parker Chess because LCD Chess did not see that it could win the endgame from the position below:

[fen]8/8/7p/2k3p1/p1p2pP1/P4P1P/1P4K1/2r2R2 w - - 0 53[/fen]

Black's move from the above position should have been an exchange of rooks and win. But instead LCD Chess played for a draw by repetition.

In the middle game it looked like Parker Chess would find a way to win but instead went astray allowing LCD an almost win.

Score:
Parker Chess: 1.5 Points
LCD Chess: 0.5 Points

This post is for Fernando. I recently saw a good deal for an Apple II so I bought it, primarily really because of the Monitor and two disk drives. The computer itself has two keys missing so I was not convinced that it would work. But anyway when I came home from work yesterday I saw that it had arrived in this huge and heavy box. So I unpacked it and tried it out in the kitchen area.

Image

My game room has at the moment no table space at all because of me opening many chess computers, photographing them and preparing the posts to add them to my website and that big bulky dusty thing was not going on the kitchen table :P So the kitchen floor had to do for me to test it out.

Anyway Thor was happy, that I was not taking something into the game room and shutting him out and decided to lay on the floor and watch. Thor loves chess a lot! So much so that he is banned from ever entering my game room! BTW. those are loving eyes and not mean green eyes. He was giving me the love eyes as a thank you for not chasing him off! :P

So anyway he was on best behavior last night and therefore was allowed to spectate. But, that is really hard for him because he is really still a baby at just over 12 months in age and he just loves chess, chess boxes and cables. It's his favorite game!

Normally, I test something against another computer but since this Apple computer was on the floor I had to just play against it myself. The photo is from the end of the game where rather than go back and write down all the moves, I figured it would be less painful if I just used the evaluation screen (space bar) with CTRL-B (trace backwards) and photograph the moves which I could then take to my laptop and enter from the photo to Chessbase.

Anyway, remembering Fernando's post with his memories of playing Colossus IV, I had loaded loaded Colossus IV game into the computer using the diskdrive on the right (in the photo) for the Test and I played at 30 seconds per move.

When we humans play chess, I think we all seek our own Immortal Game, and yesterday I was quite surprised at how easy this game flowed for me I think I will add this to one of my personally played Immortal Games list. :P Of course Colossus 4 helped me out a lot with his Blunder move. But I think that is part of any Immortal Game, the opportunity has to be there for it to happen! :P

Here is the game:

[Event "Test Game"]
[Site "Alabama, USA"]
[Date "2014.09.20"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Spacious_Mind, 30S."]
[Black "Apple II Colossus IV, 30S."]
[Result "1-0"]
[PlyCount "55"]

1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Nf6 3. d4 Nxd5 4. c4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e6 6. a3 Nc6 7. Nf3 Bd7 8. Be2
Be7 9. O-O O-O 10. Qb3 Na5 11. Qc2 Re8 12. b4 Nc6 13. Bb2 a6 14. Rfd1 Bd6 15.
Bd3 g6 16. Ne4 Nxe4 17. Bxe4 f6 18. Bxg6 hxg6 19. Qxg6+ Kf8 20. Bc1 Bxb4 21.
axb4 Nxb4 22. c5 Qb8 23. Ne5 fxe5 24. Bh6+ Ke7 25. Bg5+ Kf8 26. Ra3 Bc6 27. Rh3
exd4 28. Rh8# 1-0

I noticed in the end that I missed a faster checkmate. I think this is where computers have their edge on us, they don't miss a faster solution. I didn't see it though because I was looking for sacrifice perfection (23. Ne5)knowing that I had the mate already

ps. Collossus IV on Apple, is one of those games that you can only play on an Apple II, although the box states "COLOSSUS is the most complete chess program available for the APPLE 2 Series" It won't play on an Apple IIe computer.

I had used 18:52 minutes for the 28 moves whereas Colossus IV used 15:37 minutes. But I have an excuse!! The doorbell rang and I had to pay the Domino's Pizza man!! :P

It looks like Thor is patiently waiting to play the winner for the wager of a can of tuna.

The program’s name, Colossus IV, was inspired by the cold war classic, Colossus “The Forbin” Project.

Cheers and regards!

They don't like canned food, they sniff at it and then try to bury it by scratching the floor next to the bowl. They both prefer dried cat food which suits me just fine. :P

I tell you what they do like. Honey Dew Melon, Watermelon and Bananas (all of the above mashed up small and mushy) as treats as well as normal cat treats. Amazing.

OK I tried a game between Apple II Colossus 4 against Atari 600XL Parker Chess. In the user manual of Colossus 4 it rates Colossus 4 at BCF 156 or USCF 1850. It also has a list of Test games against other old home computer chess programs and shows the result as 14 - 2 in favor of Colossus 4. It states:

Colossus 4 has been tested against numerous other home computer chess programs and has beaten them all. In the tests, 16 games were played, on various levels, with an equal number of whites and blacks for each program.

This sounds unclear to me since you cannot tell if the tests were made where one computer for example played at 30 seconds per move and the other at 3 minutes per move. So I really read this with a pinch of salt. It shows for example (all in favor of Colossus 4):

Mychess 2.0 CBM 64 Score: 10:6
White-Knight Mk12 BBC Score 11:5
Sargon III Apple II Score 12:4
Superchess 3.5 Spectrum 12:4
White Knight Mk11 BBC Score: 14:2
Parker Chess Atari Score: 14:2
Cyrus IS Chess Spectrum Score: 14:2
Superchess 3.0 Spectrum Score: 14:1

Everything else was 16:0 in favor of Colossus 4.

In fact when I played a Commodore Tournament a few years ago that included some dedicated computer guests, the final table was as below. Colossus 4 did beat out Mychess by 1.5 points, but they split their individual match 1-1 and the rating difference between them was only 20 ELO points.

Wow it is funny by removing just the two clear leaders from the previous table (Final Chesscard and Novag VIP), you have a table that looks completely different at the top:

Where previously Colossus 4 was third, Colossus now drops to equal 4th with Chessmaster 2100 and Mychess 2.0 is second, a point behind the leader and 1.5 points ahead of Colossus 4.

The above is a good example why the old programs seem to struggle. They just don't have the ability to search deep enough because of the slow Hardware. Parker played 40. Ba6 which mates in 3 half moves. Which means it cannot at the level I set it see beyond 2 to 3 half moves.

These games are played at around 30 seconds a move. It looks like Tournament Level is the best bet for obtaining some quality games.

In Colossus 4's manual it states that it searches 300 variations per second. I wonder how many variations a modern PC program searches nowadays?
