If you use a adapter module, that shouldn't be a problem in either board. The very fact that Mephisto brought these modules on the market together with the 32 bit modules shows that they were aware that older boards (initially sold with MMI&II, Mirage, possibly also with other 8 bit modules) and the "S" boards (5V unregulated) were not quite suited for the newest modules...

Everyone who obtained a second hand board should mesure with a voltage meter what the board puts on the modules... It's easy enough: Open the board without the modules, connect it and mesure at the coils or the + and - poles (1° and 15the pole on the module connectors).

Most boards I've come across have 5V regulated, to put your mind at ease. But you can't ask me from the other side of the globe what's or what's not inside your München or Modular... But if you look at the contrast on your 16/32 bit LCD module, that might give an indication... Suppose your München has 5V regulated and you have trouble reading it, then your modules might be quite safe... But when you see that the same LCD module in your modular is much brighter, then I would be quite certain that the modular puts 6V on the modules!

Hope this helps

Hi Xavier, I measured at the coils and got about 8.3 volts! I think a
really good idea is for me to use the Muchen board only.
thanks for the info...

It seems like most of the good dedicated units are mostly European Ebay listings. I can't easily decipher the description and many won't ship to the states.

The well-used Berlin Pro I picked up last week (860 USD) arrived today. Not as glitzy as all those auctions Steve spotted.

Battered box, but everything included (save a substitute adapter) and thoughtfully packed. Very clean manual.

The machine shows some wear, fading button diagrams, but I'm delighted. It's an original owner - I chatted with him briefly - an ebay newbie, midwestern US. He played locally dating to 1967, and said he "broke even as a chess professional" for a time. I like that.

Ran Berlin through its default paces when I got home. Very unassuming machine visually, but what a beast.

Ahh...my very first chess computer:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Tandy-P ... 1441112533

I still remember the owner's manual as if it were yesterday. It went along the lines of "the highest levels will give a Master a rough time".

In hindsight, I wonder what "rough time" really meant.
