Sapphire plays a nice pettite combinaison, and then screws up the ending like a Class C player. The PlayMagnus app has a offer draw feature which it steadfastfully ignored. Curious contempt factor.

Many thanks, very interesting.
Here's what WIKI have to say about the app.

Play Magnus, a chess application for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch mobile devices by Play Magnus AS, an Oslo, Norway-based company founded by Magnus Carlsen, who became World Chess Champion in November 2013.
Play Magnus, released in February 2014, includes a Carlsen "tuned" chess engine by Tord Romstad. Basically, it is a modified version of Glaurung with some improvements and adjustments to make its style a little more similar to Magnus', and special opening libraries for each level, based on the games Magnus played around that age.

So what we have seen is the usual superiority of current software over old dedicated units....
Glaurung, BTW, is a very interesting engine.....

Magnus vs. Magnus

Post by vonderlasa »

There are at least 2 videos on Youtube of the real Magnus playing PlayMagnus. What is interesting about the app vs Sapphire is that the 11 yo Magnus is very dumb downed vs the full version.

Even dumb downed, Glaurung still is stronger in average, which is another way to say how superior these engines are...
sapphire I imagine is a 2100 machine, perhaps 2200. Yes?

I've now done my own testing with this Magnus App, against a large variety of dedicated computers.

I wish there was a way (Is there??) to post a screenshot on this forum. It can be done on the Rybka forum easily enough. I could show you the cross tables of Magnus vs many machines.

In summary:
Magnus aged 10 is not quite as strong as my Vancouver 68000. In UK terms he's about 180 ECF Max, just over 2000 elo.
Magnus aged 11 is a little stronger, the equal of the Vancouver but mincemeat for the London 68030 which I have via Ruud's emulation.
Magnus aged 12 suddenly goes off the charts. I don't have a clue how good he is but I'm guessing >2400 elo, which according to the actual human records is too strong.

Carl,
Very interesting. Have you tested the in-app purchase which lets you play against Magnus at, say, 11 years 1 month, 11 years, 2 months etc? in my own games I noted the same sharp improvement between magnus at age 11 and at age 12.

Yes I got those but haven't tried it yet. The in app purchases are a bit cheeky, 'pay to see Magnus smile etc'.

On the strength thing, I think ages 5-11 are handicapped and age 12 is full blown Glaurung but only allowing it a small amount of processing.
Great style of play though. I just think the strength calibration could do with a tweak.
