My latest aquisition. Conic 7013

All complete. The box looks like it's been in a fight, but that's pretty normal
for comps of this vintage. Everything else is excellent. The game itself looks
like it's had little if any use. It did'nt want to work at first, so I tried pulling
faces at it. That did'nt work either for some reason. I took the back off and
brushed whatever push fit connections I could see. Then it burst to life.
I was actually never even aware of this particular model.
It's a rarity, even has a place in Steve's ultra
rare section if I remember right.

Endored By Victor Korchnoi
some what strange auto-sensory move input system
you move your piece and then have to press ENTER
computer will then reply

a very rare bird Indeed!

Congrats Regards

Your post rekindled my interest in the Conic Korchnoi Larry
released in 1981 I wonder if it would be a good matchup for the Novag Dynamic S released in 1984?
my guess is the DynS would be somewhat stronger..probably much stronger
Interestingly .neither of these computers have anything written about them in the Wiki nor do I know of any published rating for them
so at the very least It would be a matchup for the history books

thanks to your overly generous actions I am looking forward to receiving the DynS in a few weeks from the land of OZ

Sadly for me I spoke too early when I said the Conic was now working.
It was, and I played a full game against it. When I tried to use it
again later the same day, it refused. It powers up with the startup jingle,
and I can adjust the level settings. It shows the 'power' and 'your move'
lights on steady just like the manual says it should, but when I lift any piece from it's home square everything goes dead. I'm hopeful that there's just
a bad connection in there somewhere and a well aimed jab with the soldering
iron in the right place will do the trick. There is no reset button to push. Any
advice from others here on what the problem might be and what steps to take
would be more than welcome.
On taking the back off, I noticed something interesting. It does not use
reed switch technology. In place of reed switches there are what look like
small metallic barrel shaped inserts. They would be magnetic I'm guessing. Also, the
mainboard has on one edge a module connection. I'm wondering if that was
for the earlier 'plug-in' Conic model, which I don't own.
I also found the level indicator lights on the playing surface to be quaint.
Looking forward to seeing the outcome of the Conic/DynS duel.

Yes
the magnet switch technology is also used in the Scisys Auto-Sensory President Chess and Chess Champion Mark V/VI Sensor board
as you drag a piece across the board you can hear the magnets in each square open and close

i did notice something similar with my Conic-Korchnoi...
it will work well for a few Hrs..even a few days....then lock up and not respond to any key presses
the fix for this is to remove the adapter ...let it sit for a day or so and plug it back in
springs right back to life
as you mentioned, the computer does not have a reset button or even a New Game button so i think by doing this procedure it performs a manual reset or something like that
anyway i wish you the best of luck in getting yours back into fighting form

Commiserating Regards

Congrats on getting the Conic 7013 Larry.

Sorry to hear that it isn't working properly yet. I am sure you will stumble across the cause/solution.

The magnetic switch board seems to work a good deal better on the Conic than it does on the Mark VI Sensory Board. The Conic is a pleasant machine to play whereas the Mark VI is finicky about how you pick up and place the pieces, and a bit of a pain.

Prior to the 2014 Klingenberg Travemunde Tournament I played through the 1981 Travemunde Conic games to see if the 7013 has the same or similar program and my one didn't have a problem. It's seems most likely to be a poor connection or power supply issue. Larry is your Conic the same inside?

In Anticipation of the DynS's arrival and the historical match between these two relatively obscure computers...i set up a training match(1 Min./Avg.) for Korchnoi pitting him against the Novag Chess Champion Super System III
The SS III is rated in the mid 1300's ..my guess is the DynS will clock in around Mid 1400's so i thought if Korchnoi could draw or defeat the SS III it would prove a worthy opponent for the DynS
SS III..confident of victory... had its printer turned on at the start of the game anticipating a brilliant win and the possible marketing and sale of the game moves afterwards

In The Game...
Korchnoi has white and opened with 1.e4
SS III answered with 1..d5 and the center counter defense ... except it has no book and so had no clue what to do next
Korchy has a book but apparently the center counter is not in it as both computers where out of book on the second move.
Korchy 0-0 safely early on while the SS III throws caution to the wind and moves its K on move 7 forfeiting the right to 0-0 for no good reason.
play continues normally until move 32 when the SS III blunders a P
on move 40 it drops another P leaving Viktor with two connected passed P's on the K side
the win at this point was a matter of mere technique

SS III Resign's here displaying ..LOSE..in its display window

after the match Korchnoi was heard to say to kibitzers watching the game that he looked forward to the Arrival of the DynS and the start of the match
it was hard to hear exactly what he said because there was alot of commotion and loud noise coming from the SS III 's direction as it was...

The Novag team plans to introduce Dr. Zukhar in the rebuttal match, hoping to tip the scales in their favor.

Hi at all,

very nice to see games from the rare Korchoi Conic. Congrats Larry!!

The next opponent, the Sensor Dynamic S, has the same program as the Super Sensor IV.

When you get your Dynamic "S" Steve, can you please let me have the details on the power supply (if it comes with it). I am always nervous with old Novag's and I have only ever tried it with batteries.
