Collector's Corner...Match Of The Unknown Soldiers

Post by Steve B »

Largely ignored and forgotten by history..the Conic Korchnoi and Novag Dynamic 'S' begin their historic 3 game encounter to be passed down to future generations, recorded and remembered for Time Immemorial

Once again a big thanks to Forum Elder Larry who made this match possible by his overly generous actions in sending me the Dynamic 'S'

The Story So Far.....

In preparation for the match...Korchnoi won a brilliant game against the Novag Chess Champion Super System III
that game is the first recorded game of the Korchnoi anywhere on the net
the game can be found here:
http://hiarcs.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=69660#69660
this match will feature the very first recorded game of the Dynamic 'S' on the net
a nice feature of the Conic is that it will light up the K square if the K is in check..

The Match will consist of 3 games at 1 Min./Avg. with colors reversing
Korchnoi wins the coin toss and will have the white pieces first

In The First Game...
Dyn S was the first to leave book at move 5
Korchnoi wins a P at move 26 which results in a
drawish R+P position
Dyn blunders on move 42 offering to trade R's which is fatal
Korchnoi accepts the trade which sets off a Blunder parade ..each side trading game losing blunders ,culminating in a nail biting P race to see which side can Promote first
Korchnoi wins the race promoting first WITH CHECK which decides the game

In The Second Game...
Korchnoi as black answers 1.e4 with the Caro-Kann but is out of book at move 2!
Dynamo completely outplays Korchnoi in the opening cracking open blacks's king side pawn cover saddling him with doubled h P's
at move 16 Korchnoi exchanges a N for 3 P's but with an exposed K side this proves to be a disastrous decision
Dynamo launches a full out assault against the exposed enemy K delivering mate at move 27
a crushing victory

In The Third and Final Game...
Korchnoi is out of book first at move 7
Dynamo wins a P on move 22
Korchnoi allows a deadly Pin against his K on move 25 which
paralyzes Whites position resulting in the loss of heavy material
at move 40 Dynamo weaves an irresistible mating net to take the match 2-1

Victor Korchnoi himself ..after having viewed the last two games by the Conic.. has initiated a law suit against the former owners of Conic demanding to have his name disassociated from the computer and also insisting his signature be physically erased from each and every unit sold

Perhaps it would have been best had these computers remained ...

Forgot to tell you Steve, I transplanted a Mephisto Atlanta mainboard
into the Dynamic 'S' just before sending it... thought you'd appreciate it.
That explains the two impressive wins, but not the loss. Korchnoi would
be proud to have his name on the Conic after it's single win.

I once owned a Novag Dynamic "S". I well remember that at the time the model came onto the market, funds were extremely limited and I could not stretch the extra $100 or so to get the Constellation. In hindsight I think I would have mowed lawns and picked up weeds for a whole year to have got the Constellation instead. After some experience with my Dynamic "S", I began to hypothesise as to what the "S" stood for. I came up with one possibility related to human waste matter which I don't think I should share explicitly on a family forum.

The "S" designation appears several times throughout Dedicated Chess computer history

offhand i can think of the ..
Applied Concepts Capablanca "S" and Greunfeld "S" modules
the Mephisto Exclusive "S" and Munchen "S" boards
in these instances the "S" stood for improved or updated

my guess is the "S" for the Novag stands for Sensor
this was the third iteration in this housing for Novag
Super Sensor IV,Sensor Dynamic,Dynamic "S"
as it is ..the names were confusing so instead of calling it the Dynamic Sensor they used the "S"

After the history making publication here of the first games of the Dynamo (and its highly inconsistent level of play)another theory that has developed and gained prominence recently in the academic world(most notably in recent debates held between Oxford and Cambridge universities) is that the S stands for....

Steve,

If you still have the Dynamic "S", perhaps you can check something out for me that has "bugged" me for 30 years please. Can you please play with the machine in a darkened room and tell me if you see the various LEDs around the board very slightly flickering? As if they have very small amounts of current going through them that is constantly varying?

This was a characteristic of my machine and it was the only Novag Cameron or I ever possessed that did this. The Constellations / Super Constellations never did it - the LEDs were always either 100% on or 100% off - this mild flickering characteristic was only seen in the Dynamic "S".

Just tried it
actually the 1-8 LEDS do in fact flicker slightly when the computer is waiting for the player to move
not when it is computing its move
The a-h LEDS dont flicker at all
i would have never noticed that...but then again i tend not to play in total darkness
:P

Amazing that you would remember that

Ah, that is good to know. Thanks Steve. Strike another one off the bucket list  Seriously though, all these years I had wondered whether there was something wrong with my Dynamic "S". Now I know there isn't. Or perhaps more accurately, it performs according to manufacturer's specs (arguably two different things).
