Celebrities who need chess lessons

Post by fourthirty »

Just found this on the Mechanics' Institute facebook page (a post from last month). Too funny...

Celebrities who need chess lessons!
Chapter 1: Kim Kardashian West.
Her Knight and Bishop are misplaced, and how
did her Queen get out? Oh well.

Example #2 - Woody Allen.

He has the chessboard set up in the wrong orientation in his 1965 film What's New Pussycat:

This is surprising, since he is known to be an amateur chess player. Also, a year after this film he published the Gossage-Vardebedian Papers in The New Yorker (January 22, 1966). It is a parody of a correspondence chess game conducted with a series of letters exchanged by the players, Gossage and Vardebedian.

Perhaps he purposefully set up the board in that manner?

 Woody Allen’s comical correspondence was priceless, Greg!
I recall all the conditional moves people would send in an effort to hasten the game and reduce postage costs.
Then there’s always the dilemma of the player that comes home inebriated one day.

Here’s one from “Blazing Saddles” – 1974.
Gene Wilder needs to learn when it’s time to resign.

LOL. I forgot about the chess scene in that film!

Cleavon Little: Well, Jim, since you are my guest and I am your host, what's your pleasure? What do you like to do?
Gene Wilder: Oh, I don't know. Play chess... screw...
Cleavon Little: [quickly] Well, let's play chess.

Too funny John!

Well, here is another example:

Helmut Schmidt, ex-chancellor of Germany and Peer Steinbrueck, a would-be chancellor at the time presented a book by the nice title "Zug um Zug" (move by move), both of them pretended to be able and avid chessplayers. Embarrasingly the board was setup with a wrong orientation. That Steinbrueck did'nt become chancellor had other reasons though...

Well if we are talking about the all too common mistake of setting up the board with the wrong colored square in the lower right corner...

how about an actual dedicated chess computer built that way??
the Infamous Omikron Bogol 5.0

Shown here at the 1982 European championship playing against the TSB IV La Regence
Bogol is the bottom computer

Greetings Steve:

It’s really amazing that the programmers and engineers can design a schachcomputer (a challenging endeavor) yet fail to notice that the board is offset by 90 degrees.
What’s worse is that this embarrassing faux pas occurs as late as 1982.

This reminds me of my childhood nemesis that walked around school with his shoelaces untied though managed to twice knock me out of first place at our school’s unrated chess competition.

 Go Figure Regards,
John

All of which makes the Bogol the equivalent of the stamp collectors "Inverted Jenny"
a highly sought after and highly valuable collectors item
legend has it that about 5 were released for sale
I actually lived close to someone who had one and I saw it a few times
I could never get the guy to even consider selling it to me
he moved away several years ago and for all I know he might even be dead now

Exhumation Regards

Steve - if this Bogol, aka "Jenny", with her rotated board, were to marry the Fidelity CC1, with his reversed notation, and they had a child - what would the result be?

Hypothetically speaking, of course... :?

Sadly the child would be Dyslexic
perhaps the Gavon Pico Chess was derived from the consummation of this marriage
