Millennium ChessGenius vs Millennium ChessGenius Pro

Post by fourthirty »

Hi all,

As a result of the poor showing of the MCG Pro in the High Performer Tournament, I've decided to pit my MCG Pro against the MCG.

30 sec/move average, ECO ON, MCG Pro Book #1 (London).

[Event "Millennium Plastic Face Off"]
[Site "SFO"]
[Date "2017.07.02"]
[Round "1"]
[White "MCG"]
[WhiteElo "?"]
[Black "MCG Pro"]
[BlackElo "?"]
[Result "1-0"]

The MCG opens with the English, which ends up in the Four Knights variation:

[fen]r1bqkb1r/pppp1ppp/2n2n2/4p3/2P5/2N2N2/PP1PPPPP/R1BQKB1R w KQkq - 4 4[/fen]

The MCG brings out the Queen early in move #5:

[fen]r1bqk2r/ppp2ppp/2np1n2/4p3/1bP5/2N1PN2/PPQP1PPP/R1B1KB1R w KQkq - 0 6[/fen]

Both out of book after move 7:

[fen]r1bqk2r/ppp2ppp/2np1n2/2bNp3/2P5/P3PN2/1PQP1PPP/R1B1KB1R w KQkq - 0 7[/fen]

The MCG continues to play his Queen actively:

[fen]r2qr1kn/1pp3pp/1b1p1p2/pP1PpP2/6Q1/P3P2P/1B1P1P2/R3KBR1 w Q - 1 18[/fen]

The MCG pro elects to sacrifice his Queen for a dual Rook exchange:

[fen]5qR1/2pnr2k/1p1p1r1p/pP1P1P1B/P3P3/2Q4P/5K2/6R1 w - - 4 47[/fen]

[fen]6k1/2Qnr3/1p1p1r1p/pP1P1P1B/P3P3/7P/5K2/8 w - - 0 49[/fen]

At move 56, MCG Pro continues to play very passively, while the MCG continues to advance:

[fen]7k/2Qn2r1/1p1p1rBp/pP1P1P2/P3PK1P/8/8/8 w - - 3 57[/fen]

Move 58, MCG Pro plays Ne5, which HIARCS analysis reveals to be a large blunder (HIARCS recommends Kh8, which would avoid the check):

[fen]6k1/2Q3r1/1p1p1rBp/pP1PnP1P/P3P3/4K3/8/8 w - - 1 59[/fen]

The threat of the MCG pawn promotion results in the Rook loss:

[fen]8/1P1r2k1/P2P1nBp/4QP1P/1r6/8/4K3/8 w - - 0 84[/fen]

[fen]8/1P1r2k1/3P1nBp/4QP1P/8/8/4K3/8 w - - 0 85[/fen]

And, it's game over:

[fen]7k/7Q/3P2Bp/5P1P/8/8/4K3/8 w - - 0 93[/fen]

Games 2 & 3 are complete.

[Event "Millennium Plastic Face Off"]
[Site "SFO"]
[Date "2017.07.05"]
[Round "2"]
[White "MCG Pro"]
[Black "MCG"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[ECO "A28"]

MCG Pro opened with the English (similar to MCG on Game 1), and they ended up with the same Four Knights variation as Game 1.

The MCG was "out of book" in move 10:

[fen]r1bqnrk1/ppp3pp/2np4/4pP2/2P5/2PP1NP1/P4PBP/R1BQ1RK1 w - - 0 10[/fen]

Yet the MCG Pro wasn't out of book until three moves later at move 13:

[fen]1r1q1rk1/ppp3pp/2npbn2/4p3/2P2P1N/2PP2P1/P5BP/1RBQ1RK1 w - - 1 14[/fen]

DEEP HIARCS analysis reports a completely even game throughout (never greater than +/- 1), with the exception of the following...

It discovered the MCG Pro made a huge blunder in Move 22 with Rf3:
[fen]1r4k1/p2q2pp/B1pp4/8/2PP2nN/2P2RPb/P6P/3Q2K1 w - - 2 22[/fen]

Following this continuation, the MCG could have forked the Pro's K&Q in Move 25, which would result in the loss of the Pro's Rook:

[fen]2r3k1/p5pp/2ppq3/8/2PP4/2P1nRP1/P5KP/3Q4 w - - 1 26[/fen]

And then MCG's remaining Rook could have performed severe damage to the Pro's pawns.

[fen]6k1/p5pp/2pp4/8/3P4/6PP/r7/3K4 w - - 0 33[/fen]

Unfortunately for the MCG, it did not calculate this line (not surprising, being the same engine), and the game ultimately ended on Move 50 with threefold repetition by the Pro:
[fen]5k2/8/2p3pN/p7/2nPK1P1/8/P7/8 w - - 15 50[/fen]
1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.e4 Bb4 5.d3 O-O 6.g3 d6 7.Bg2 Ne8 8.O-O Bxc3 9.bxc3 f5 10.exf5 Bxf5 11.Nh4 Be6 12.Rb1 Rb8 13.f4 Nf6 14.fxe5 Nxe5 15.Bxb7 Qd7 16.Be3 c6 17.Ba6 Bh3 18.Rxb8 Rxb8 19.Re1 Nfg4 20.d4 Nxe3 21.Rxe3 Ng4 22.Rf3 $4 { -9.09/24 } 22...Rb2 $4 { 0.00/25 } ( 22...Qe6 { -10.92/27 } 23.Bc8 Rxc8 24.Ng2 Bxg2 25.Kxg2 Ne3+ 26.Rxe3 Qxe3 27.Qf3 Re8 ) 23.c5 Nxh2 24.Re3 Ng4 25.Re2 Rxe2 26.Qxe2 Nf6 27.cxd6 Qxd6 28.Bc4+ Kf8 29.Qf2 Be6 30.Bxe6 Qxe6 31.Nf3 Qe4 32.Ne5 Qb1+ 33.Qf1 Qxf1+ 34.Kxf1 Ke7 35.c4 h6 36.Nf3 Ne4 37.Kg2 Kd6 38.g4 a5 39.Nh4 Ke6 40.Nf5 g6 41.Nxh6 Nd2 42.Kg3 Nxc4 43.Kf4 Kf6 44.Ng8+ Kf7 45.Nh6+ Kf8 46.Ke4 Ke7 47.Kf4 Kf8 48.Ke4 Nd2+ 49.Ke3 Nc4+ 50.Ke4 1/2-1/2

Game 3:
[Event "Millennium Plastic Face Off"]
[Site "SFO"]
[Date "2017.07.06"]
[Round "3"]
[White "MCG"]
[Black "MCG Pro"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[ECO "D30"]
[EventDate "2017.07.06"]

1.d4 c6 2.c4 d5 3.Nf3 e6 4.Qc2 Nd7 5.e3............................. 1/2-1/2

Another benign game. MCG opens with the Queens Pawn (instead of the English), which leads to the Queen's Gambit Declined.

Both the MCG and the MCG Pro are out of book in Move 5.

Passive play and a few even exchanges throughout. The MCG does bring out the queen early again (similar to Game 1). The MCG ends the game in Move 34 with threefold repetition. Not worth entering the rest of the moves...

Game #4. The MCG Pro had a much stronger showing here.

[Event "Millennium Plastic Face Off"]
[Site "SFO"]
[Date "2017.07.07"]
[Round "4"]
[White "MCG Pro"]
[Black "MCG"]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "C34"]
[EventDate "2017.07.07"]

The PRO plays 2.f4 for the King's Gambit, which the MCG happily accepts, and ends up playing the 3...d6 Fischer Defence (which Bobby Fischer began playing after loss to Boris Spassky in 1960 @ Mar del Plata):
[fen]rnbqkbnr/ppp2ppp/3p4/8/4Pp2/5N2/PPPP2PP/RNBQKB1R w KQkq - 0 4[/fen]

The MCG blunders with 16....N7b6
[fen]r3k2r/pQ2b2p/1n1pNq2/2pn2p1/5p2/8/PPP3PP/RNB1R1K1 w kq - 1 17[/fen]

However, The PRO loses the advantage and plays 18.Nc7+
[fen]r3k2r/pQN1b2p/1n1p1q2/2p3p1/1nP2p2/8/PP4PP/RNB1R1K1 w kq - 2 18[/fen]

Playing 18.Bd2 would have resulted in a Rook & Knight exchange in favor of the PRO.

The PRO is up a minor piece through move 33, and then MCG plays f3:
[fen]2nr1k2/4b3/2Qp4/6pp/1p2N1q1/1P3p2/P2R2PP/3R3K w - - 0 34[/fen]

which leads to the loss of that pawn two moves later. The MCG then plays 37...Qe5:
[fen]2nr4/4b1k1/2Qp4/4q2p/1p4p1/1P4N1/P2R2PP/5R1K w - - 2 38[/fen]

which results in disaster - the Rook check results in the MCG's queen loss:
[fen]2n2b2/3q4/3pR1k1/3Q3N/1p4p1/1P6/P5PP/7K w - - 1 43[/fen]
[fen]2n2b2/8/3pQ1k1/7N/1p4p1/1P6/P5PP/7K w - - 0 44[/fen]

At the end, the PRO advances the a file pawn down for the promotion, which results in this position after move 57.a8=Q Kd7:
[fen]Q7/3k4/8/8/1Q4p1/1P4P1/6KP/8 w - - 1 58[/fen]

The PRO then plays 58.Qd4+, which results in a mate two moves later.
[fen]Q7/3k4/8/8/3Q2p1/1P4P1/6KP/8 w - - 2 58[/fen]

Interesting, if the PRO had played 58.Qbe4 instead,
[fen]Q7/3k4/8/8/4Q1p1/1P4P1/6KP/8 w - - 2 58[/fen]

It would have resulted in a mate the next move via:
58...Kc7 59.Qec6#, or
58...Kd6 59.Qac6#

Instead, the game ended a move later with:

58.Qd4+ Ke6 59.Qg8+ Ke7 60.Qdd8#
[fen]3Q2Q1/4k3/8/8/6p1/1P4P1/6KP/8 w - - 6 60[/fen]
