Finally, the DGT plastic USB Board will be available in November. DGT calls it DGT Smart Board.

On a first view, it looks very good for the low price. I am sure, we will see very soon a video at youtube.

Looks quite good, although I would have preferred a more standard Staunton set.

But the real thing putting me off is the lack of LEDs on each square. Having to look at either the clock or the screen means you can never really play any type of blitz chess. I know they can't be used for tournaments but the DGT boards have a good interface that could be used to turn them off when not wanted. And there is the technologly now to make them essentially invisible when not in use, for example:

I'll be sticking with my Novag UCB for now....

As far I know, the DGT plastic-boards with LEDs will be available next year.

That's good news, I'll keep a look out for that.

The description of the new model doesn't make it clear: does the Smart Board include the pieces and clock? The pieces look plastic too so I think they are included and the description says the moves are displayed on the DGT 3000 but there is currently no indication of what is in the package.

The board, pieces and clock for EU198 is quite a good price compared to the wood sets, but adding another EU90 for the clock would make me pause.

Probably not good news for me.

I just want a normal DGT board (either wood or plastic) with LEDs to show the moves. Not yet another computer/board combination unit. It just needs one of DGT's electronics experts to build one rather than a specialist designer to create something in their style. As far as the appearance goes even I could design it: either their wooden board with 81 holes (one for each intersection) drilled for the LEDs like the Novag UCB, or their plastic board with 256 "hidden" LEDs (four for each square) like in the clock I linked to before.

The "Great News" isn't so much a quote about a new chess computer but it's about Daniel's project.
The young lad came here to the Hiarcs forum asking for help with his graduation for Industrial Design.
He got the opportunity to link this project to his computer chess hobby. The assignment consisted of developing a new chess computer on behalf of DGT B.V. which apparently now is going into production.

Thanks for explaining that. In that case I echo your comment and must say he has done really, really well to go from a graduation project to helping create a product that will actually be manufactured.

Well done Daniel.
