Radio Shack Champion 2250XL takes a 1-0 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

Now we start the matchup of #2 seed RS Champion 2250XL vs #15 seed Excalibur Chess Station. The first game features the famous Slav Defense. The Excalibur Chess Station does not play too badly, but soon the RS Champion XL forms three connected passed pawns, and the Excalibur unit can't deal with all the threats. The Radio Shack unit leads 1-0.

Radio Shack Champion 2250XL takes a 2-0 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

Game 2 in this matchup may be my favorite game yet in this tournament. A complex tactical game where white masses its three strongest pieces on the e-file. Black eventually makes a poor move and allows its Rook to get trapped, and must shed a Knight to rescue it. The RS Champion 2250XL makes a beautiful tactical move, 36. Bxc7!, to effectively win the game, and takes a 2-0 lead in this match.

RS Champion 2250XL now leads 3-0

Post by TracySMiller »

The Excalibur Chess Station makes a bad decision by offering to trade Queens, which leads immediately to an enemy Rook infiltration, and the RS Champion 2250XL mops up in the endgame to take a 3-0 lead.

RS Champion 2250XL now leads 4-0

Post by TracySMiller »

This game was fascinating. The Exacalibur Chess Station acually had the RS Champion 2250XL on the ropes, totally hemmed in the corner, and even though a win was not clear, should have been able to finagle a draw. But it offered a Queen trade, lost a pawn, and then offered a Rook trade, a bad move being a pawn down. The RS Champion 2250XL played the KPP vs KP endgame correctly and got the win to go up 4-0 in the match.

RS Champion 2250XL now leads 5-0

Post by TracySMiller »

Excalibur Chess Station makes a bad decision on how to save its attacked Bishop on move 12, and RS Champion 2250XL takes advantage of the hanging position of the white Queen. After 13...c5, no matter where the Knight moves, black can reply with Bxh2+, winning the Queen. Thus, white has to part with its Knight, and Black has little difficulties getting the win, taking a commanding 5-0 lead in the match.

RS Champion 2250XL now leads 6-0

Post by TracySMiller »

The lack of the English opening in its repertoire bites the Excalibur Chess Station pretty hard, and it allows the RS Champion 2250XL to build up a dominating center, and White takes advantage of it with a Queen-supported-by-Bishop attack on the weak Black king to take a 6-0 lead in the match.

RS Champion 2250XL wins match 7-0

The RS Champion 2250XL wraps up the 7-0 shutout in nice fashion. White can perhaps save the game with 18. Qh3, but after 18. Rac1, it's all over.

#4 Mephisto Advanced Travel Chess vs. #13 Radio Shack 1850

Post by TracySMiller »

Time to move on to the next match, featuring #4 Mephisto Advanced Travel Chess vs. #13 Radio Shack 1850. The first game featured some nice tactics on White's part, and the Mephisto unit did a great job handling the complexities of the situation to take the first game of the match. I'm going to start reporting the Mistakes and Blunders of each game, per Lichess analysis using Stockfish 8.

An exciting game! Both sides attacking its opponent's King-side. Black's attack is striking first. However, instead of making the correct move, 21. Bb3, which can actually produce a draw, RS 1850 makes the fatal move that follows. Mephisto Adv Travel Chess quickly finds the Mate in 6 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Looks can be deceiving. Black looks to have all the momentum, with better placed pieces and White's pieces are all on the first row. However, Stockfish claims this position as exactly even, and RS 1850 miscalculates, drops a few pawns, and Mephisto Adv Travel Chess mops up to take a 3-0 lead in the match.

Mephisto Advanced Travel Chess takes a 4.5-0.5 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

The Mephisto Adv Travel Chess overwhelmed the RS 1850 tactically. Unfortunately, I lost the PGN of this game. I was trying to save a step and not record the PGN on Arena, then transfer it to Lichess for analysis, and somehow I lost the record of the game. Learning experience on my part.

Mephisto Advanced Travel Chess takes a 5.5-0.5 lead

The RS 1850 doesn't play badly, but makes a few mistakes in a flurry of exchanges that put it down the exchange. The Mephisto unit plays a nice endgame to get the win and make the score 5.5-0.5.

I'm going to start linking directly to the game in Lichess, which will save me some work, and make it easier for you guys to play through the game AND see the Stockfish superficial analysis. Here's the link to the game:
