the only serious java chess game i can imagine is shredder.

it plays on the level of a dedicated chess computer.
its worth the money. the only serious criticism i have is, the maximal amount of time it computes is 60". of course it has the analysis-mode as kind of infinite analysis. but for playing time-control games 60" is the maximum average time.

i would prefer 3' so i could play tournament games with it.
it also has no permanent brain.

This is the best bet for Windows Mobile chess users and maybe for another OS mobiles as well. Also we'd like to note that ChessMaster Mobile plays chess quite well and do not get upset if your Samsung or Sony Ericsson chess phone beats you!

Java Small Chess v.0.1 is nice game. It is free and it is open source, distributed under the GNU GPL. But, still in early development; may do not work properly. It is tested on Motorola, SUN’s MIDP emulator. BS Chess is also nice option.
