Collector's Corner..The Riddle Of The Sphinx

Post by Steve B »

Dominator that is

i dont know what it is about this computer that makes it so desirable by collectors
when one does appear on Ebay they usually sell for about $400-$500 a pop
in fact it sells for about the same price as the CXG Sphinx 40 which is housed in a beautiful auto-sensory wooden board that takes different modules and runs on a 68k Motorola processor while the Dominator is plastic and runs on the 6502 8 bit
Selective Search rates the Dominator 1866
it competed in the Paris Tournament in 2009 and scored an anemic
2-3 and tied for 7-8 place managing to defeat only the Novag participants
it does look great cosmetically with a heavy plastic housing and unusual clear plastic cover protecting the dual display screens

here is a game it played against the Sphinx 40 rated over 100+ pts lower then the Dominator

In The Game...
1 minute per move avg
S40 had white
Dominator was out of book first after 10 moves and generally hit about 5 ply
the game was a dead draw when the S40 manages a nice tactical flurry that net's it 2 pawns
the combination was almost 11 moves deep(moves 43-53) so perhaps the S40 just got lucky:

S40 has a clear win here but just keeps on checking aimlessly
i was charitable to the Dominator here and adjudicated the game a draw as i didnt feel like playing this out for another 100 or so moves

Still ..a draw against an opponent rated 100+ Pts. lower is nothing to write home about

Dominated Regards

While were are on the subject of CXG computers..
i dusted off the S50 which was sold with the same exact module as the S40 but in a larger board
the module is called the "Adversary" .. its the size of the board(40 cm or 50 cm) which gives it its name S40 or S50
Wiki shows the S40/50 at mid 1700's and as it did have a won game against the much higher rated Sphinx Dominator i
decided to give it a taste of what it feels like to be a heavy favorite and matched it up with the little CXG Advanced Star Chess released a year earlier in 1986
Selective Search rates the Advanced Star 1589..a good 125+ lower then the S50

the ASC was one of my favorite portables when it was first released for sale due to the amazing array of features it offered for an inexpensive hand held peg-sensory portable of the time
different playing styles, library function to store games ..display of depth search and position eval ..etcetc..
The S50 also offers different playing styles and as it is rated a good 125+ higher then the ASC I tried to even things up
a bit setting up a game as follows:

Time Control
ASC-1 Min.Avg.
S50-30 Sec.Avg.

Playing Style
ASC-Normal
S50-Slightly Aggressive

In The Game
ASC had white and was out of book first after 9 moves and typically reached 5 ply(7 in the Endgame)
As in the last game..major exchanges take place early on
however here ..the Q's are off the board and its the ASC with a P to the good
showing the endgame brilliance of Capablanca himself...the ASC
puts on an endgame clinic and takes the game

I have it on extremely good authority that ASC is one of the finest portable chess machines ever created. A certain collector I know - in the process of rationalising his collection - refused my heartfelt offer of 5,414 rubles plus a showering in gold-wrapped chocolate coins **

** Purchased as Halloween give-aways but no-one stops by my place these days anyway.
Chess is like painting the Mona Lisa whilst walking through a minefield.

Continuing this odd tournament where the loser goes home and the winner goes on
to play another computer rated much higher/lower then itself..

The CXG Advanced Star faces off against the Excalibur Mirage Marble Robot..
Mirage contains the well known Grandmaster program rated 1814(Selective Search)...
a good 225+ Pts higher then the ASC

to even things up a bit we again let the ASC think for 1 Min per move while the Mirage gets 30 Sec..

In The Game
ASC was white
Mirage was out of book first after 9 moves and typically completed a 5 Ply search
The Mirage outplays the ASC in the middle game winning 2 P's
however it is left with 3 weak isolated P Islands one of which are doubled P's
Once again the ASC exhibits Super GM ability in the endgame and manages to
win back a pawn and create 2 united passed P's on the Kingside
Mirage underestimates the power of the 2 Passers and when the ASC sacrifices the Exchange
there is nothing the Mirage can due to prevent their advance
Another Amazing performance by ASC

After dispatching the Excalibur Marble Mirage which stood guard at
the gates to Robo City, the CXG Advanced Star enters this strange
land and is quickly set upon by the Novag 2Robot
i dont know of any solid rating for the 2R but i would imagine it
to be about 1500..around 50-75 Elo weaker then the ASC
with ratings so similar i set up an even game at 1 minute per move
each

In The Game
2R Had White and was out of book after 4 moves
Surprisingly ..ASC loses a P deep in the Middle game with its only
compensation being doubled P's for the 2R
I say surprising because the 2R has never actually won a game of
chess against any opponent ever(Computer or Human) so this was
unfamiliar territory for it
down a P in a lost endgame the pesky ASC swindles the 2R by offering
to repeat the position for a draw
the 2R ..confused that it hasn't lost by now..accepts the draw

In The Rematch
ASC Had White and 2R was out of book after 2 moves!
Still in shock that it managed not to lose the first game the 2R was
back to form and drops a piece for 2P's within 10 moves and was down
a full piece for 1P by 17 moves
ASC didnt even have to get out of bed to win this one

In A desperate effort to see if the 2Robot can win its first game
ever against anyone..i set it against this powerhouse chess
computer:

Image
Creatively called the Novag Chess Computer and "officially" endorsed
by GM Raymond Keene,
the Specs on this monster are:
2kb Rom
192 Bytes of Ram
8 mhz
Weight-60 Grams
there are 8 playing levels with no details about the levels in the
manual except that level 8 is the strongest
level 8 seems to take about 1-2 Min per move but as i am not
certain i set the 2Robot for "equal response time"

In The Game..
Novag Chess Computer had white and was out of book after 2 moves
the position was even ..well into the middle game when the 2Robot
offered to repeat the position
NCC avoided the repetition at the expense of losing a P
and saw its position deteriorate rapidly soon afterwards losing
another P and then being mated

Steve, these are fun matches to follow. I'm hoping to do some crazy matchups now that I have enough units to do something (possibly) interesting.

I know that this Novag Chess Computer is a heavyweight (at 60 grams), but can one be sure that it was ever 'in book' other than it was programmed to maybe always start at d4 or e4 and then when threatened at d4 merely moved out of the way to d5?? :D

Apropos of nothing: I've always wondered about this 'endorsed by' business. It's amazing how many units are 'endorsed' by Kasparov. Just how did this occur? Did the manufacturer send him each of the units and he said, 'Yep, that's a powerful machine that will give someone a game commensurate with my skills.' or was it more like, 'Yep, this machine can play according to the rules of chess.' or was it more like, 'Send me a good check and I trust that any machine you put out will meet my standards.' :?: (In the above case, I wonder what other powerhouses Raymond Keene has endorsed.)

BTW: What's your guess as to the origin of the Novag Chess Computer? A predecessor of the Jasper?

Another 'When Titans Collide' Story Regards,
Dave

Glad you find these odd ball matches interesting Dave
just trying to add a bit of flavor into the day to day grind of the work-a-day world of hard core computer Chess
i will enjoy following your matches when you get them going

the Novag CC is a strange bird
it seems to have been released in conjunction with Novag to support the creation of the just founded English Chess Association (a short lived now defunct association dreamed up by GM Keene)
on the actual box it has printed the name and address of Eureka electronics a major distributor of Chess Computers in the UK
Inside the box is a bizarre coupon entitling the owner of the computer to a free one year membership to the ECA( worth 8 Sterling supposedly) which the owner must send to Eureka
the actual endorsement by Keene ..printed on the box says...
GRANDMASTER KEENE-E.C.A.EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SAY(the word SAY here is not a typo on my part..this is what the box actually has printed on it)
"We recommend this Novag chess computer as ideal for all players who want to improve their standard or who just want to have fun with chess"

as to its origins..
it does seem to be the predecessor to the Jasper-Solo line of Novag computers

when deciding which computer to offer up as a sacrifice to the 2Robot to get an easy win.. it was a tough decision between the CC or this other unusual Novag Computer:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/10261668@N ... 0922171918

but as you can see this one plays games other then chess and so technically is not a DEDICATED CHESS Computer and i am not even allowed to have it in my collection..let alone actually post a game it plays

Were Going To Disney World Regards

With the 2Robot still pumped from its crushing victory over the 60 Gram Novag Computer Chess.. it insisted i offer up another opponent to test its superior chess prowess
having just added the Chafitz Limited Edition Incolay Stone Boris to the collection proper..it seemed like a good choice and a good way to test it

Boris is rated 1150 by Selective Search which is a good 350+ weaker then the 2R(and about 150 stronger then me) so i gave Boris 3 Minutes per move and the 2R 1 MIN

Boris is well known for Trash Talking (displaying scrolling comments during a game) so i will be showing the comments
Boris made during the game(BOLD RED TYPE)..along with the position it was commenting about

In The Game ...Boris had white and was out of book at move 1 because it has no book
Boris elects not to make an obvious recapture of a piece on move 11 and instead decides on superior Rook placement on the other side of the board .this catapults the game into a Bizzaro world/alternative reality type of chess where the relative value of the pieces hold no meaning and meaningless P moves hold sway over winning material

I'll let the diagrams and comments speak for themselves..

Appalled at the poor sportsmanship displayed by the 2Robot i thought some Humble Pie was in order

In This game 2R plays without its QN in a handicap match against the Incolay Boris
each side gets 30 Sec Avg
Handicap matches generally dont garner much interest in the rough and tumble world of Computer Chess where ELO is all that matters..
Still..about a year ago i sponsored a game between a GM who gave Rook odds to a Novag 2Mhz Constellation..
1 move per day ..seemed pretty popular ..so what the hell..
For those very few interested..heres the game..sans the Trash talk

REMOVE WHITE QUEEN KNIGHT

In The Game...
2R had white ..no book moves due to the handicap
as this was a fast time control i disengaged the Robotic Arm movement for the 2R(not an easy task as the manual is very vague on how to do that)
it took only 10 moves until Boris blundered back the piece for a P
after 13 moves the extra P was gone
Boris played like a drunken sailor losing pieces quicker then i lose my hair these days
perhaps Boris was secretly programmed for LOSERS CHESS where the side to get Checkmated first wins?

Thanks for the games and good to see the 2R working again and that you have eventually worked out how to play without the arm.
Our lady friend at Novag told me that 2R contains the same program as the Star Beryl?

I have to tell you Bryan
you did a great job beta testing the 2Robot
other then a small adjustment i recently had to make (by hand ..no tools)the Robot has been working fine now since its release 3 years ago
Far more reliable then the Robot Adversary

3 Cheers Regards
Steve
