Post by Hans van der Zijden »

Since Rybka is no longer allowed to participate, I thought I would just visit the WCCC just once or twice for pictures and an interview or two. So when Harvey couldn’t get a week off from work, I gladly accepted his offer to operate Hiarcs. That’s why there is another diary this year.

Saturday november 19
I wanted to sleep a lot the night before the tournament would start. But I had to answer some e-mails late at night and do some last minute downloads. When everything finally worked as wanted, time had progressed 1 hour and I was wide awake. I had quite a restless night.

I was only 14 minutes late picking up Harm Geert Muller, who is going to Tilburg for the Chinese Chess and the Shogi tournament. His programs is going for the medals. Okay, there are only 3 competitors in the Chinese Chess and 2 in the Shogi, but still. We talked all the way so time seemed to pass by quickly. We arrived at the university at 10:00. And then it took us only 45 minutes more to find the right building. It turned out the building was not on the campus itself. Someone told us it was on a street outside at nr. 36. We found another university building, but that wasn’t it. We also knew we had to look for a building with red bricks. We passed it earlier because we were looking to the wrong side of the street. It was nr. 35, not 36.

I quickly installed myself (and my laptop), did some last tests and was ready before the official opening. First round Hiarcs had black against Jonny. White gives away a pawn and Johannes has no idea why. Jonny is still quite happy, Hiarcs has evals between -0.5 and -0.7. But there is no progress and scores goes slowly to 0.00. The draw is inevitable. In the second round Jonny again loses a pawn. This time against Woodpusher and in the opening already: 1.Nf3 g5?? Again a big questionmark above the head of Johannes. Richard Pijl (The Baron) discovered that this opening was played twice in his database and black scored 75%. That is probably why the move was not filtered out. Jonny won the game anyway, because Woodpusher is not a very strong program. It made me think of a tonguebreaker: How much wood would a woodpecker peck if a woodpecker would peck wood? Maybe we should change that to: How much wood would a Woodpusher lose if a Woodpusher would push wood?

The second round Hiarcs finished quickly, which allowed me to finish this first report. Now it is off to home for some well needed sleep. I am not staying in a hotel, because my cat doesn’t like me to be away for a long time. So I will drive 2½ hours per day. I hope I can stay focussed the whole week.

Sunday november 20
Again a short night. The alarm woke me up at 6:30. Probably because I programmed it that way. Last night I gave Harm Geert a 15 minute window in which I would pick him up. Made it with a few minutes to spare. One hour long we ride in one of the thickest fogs I have ever encountered. Most cars were going pretty slow. I can’t afford to lose too much time. Near Tilburg is a fairytale amusementpark called “De Efteling”. That’s exactly where the fog clears. A pity, it would have looked enchanting.

Third round against the Baron. Richard brought his children to distract me. They only distract me from falling asleep. Still Hiarcs has a lost position right after the opening with a trapped bishop. Computers don’t notice that and too easily The Baron lets the bishop out of its cage. The evaluation is +2.5, but the Baron can’t see any progress and a bug in the 50-move-rule code abruptly ends the boring game.

But we are outbored by the game between Booot and Shredder. Shredder however has no bug with the 50-move-rule and eventually wins.

In round 4 Hiarcs gets out of book a pawn ahead. I don’t understand all these bad booklines. It shouldn’t be too difficult to write a program to analyze all lines and delete the bad ones. Hiarcs steadily improves its positions and wins. Three out of four, but we still have to play all the big names.
