Fidelity Elegance
The best word to describe this chess computer is...well...elegant!
It has a wide opening book, unlike the earlier voice champion and '9'
level machines which the company had mistakenly put in a deep but
narrow book. It seems to me that the Elegance has as an opening book
the CB16 module which was available as an overpriced option some other
models. On startup you can repeatedly press <RV> to scroll through about
a half dozen or so white first moves. Same for black's first move.
On the minus side, good old Fidelity used substandard reed switches
for the auto sensory squares, which invariably broke down. Once these
are replaced, and the junk pieces are substituted, you have a really nice
computer. It's rating of about 1780elo belies it's playing strength versus
humans on it's short time controls. It's a hard nut to crack.
After some six or so years following chess comps on ebay, I'm noticing
the Elegance is actually borderline rare, and good examples are just plain
rare. I bought mine new in late 1984, and had to sell the near new Super
Connie to pay for it. I was pleased with it until the squares started going
dead. I got sick of replacing reed switches and stuck the thing up in the
wardrobe, where it sat for over two decades. I finally got it back down
and replaced 'all' the reed switches. Now it works like a dream.
Here it is:
If you have the option of buying a good one, take it up. A great,
user friendly chess computer if ever there was one.
nice day all...

Hi Jose, Yes, it is Fidelity's smallest unit. Put it alongside the Avant GardeJose wrote:Yes, you are right. It looks great, like the most wooden Fidelitys.
I never owned one like that. For me it is very small and have no display...
I think the smallest of Fidelitys wooden Armada
Best José
and look at the difference. Out of curiosity I just put it alongside
Fidelity's '12' level challenger, and the sides are about half a centimetre
less. Sometimes small can be better. Sometimes no display can be
better. Less to go wrong as the computer ages? If all you want is a bit
of casual fireside chess, the Elegance is ideal. Not the same predictable
opening moves each time like some of the others.
The reason they are rare is because of their price. Fidelity were not too
good in the pricing department, doing themselves out of a lot of business
by charging too much. I paid $650 for the Elegance in a time when people
were raising families on $200 per week. If I had invested that amount
into the stock market wisely it might well be worth many thousands.
That's life...

There is good news for the owners of non-working Elegance computers.
Mine didn´t work properly so I sent it to UK for repair.
It came back to me with a completely new PCB running at 8MHz !!!
It plays a hell of a game now, and the new electronics should easily outlast me. I really recommend this upgrade.

my Saitek Brute Force awaits you at the Paris 2012 Tournament
32KB ROM Regards
Steve
Hello Steve,
For several reasons I am looking forward to my annual trip to Paris.
As for playing strength the Elegance in this tuned version should be a little bit stronger than the Mephisto Polgar.
So the Brute Force will be well out of reach...we will see.
But the point I wanted to make is simply that there is hope for non working machines.
There are still people around who know how this old stuff works...
Kind regards
Christian

Hi Christian, Thanks for the link, I'll be looking into it for sure. AreChristian wrote: It came back to me with a completely new PCB running at 8MHz !!!
you sure your Elegance is 8mhz, not 6mhz? The company you refer
to is advertising a 6mhz Elegance motherboard, not 8mhz. Or did they
overclock yours more on request?
I notice they also offer a motherboard for the Excellence/Par Excellence
clocked at 16mhz !! I will consider that too. To be sure, I did'nt know
the 6502 processors could go to 16mhz, or anything like that speed.
It's the weekend now, but I will contact the company with some
questions, eg is it necessary to send the computer?..or for that matter
is it necessary to send even just the motherboard?
all the best,
Larry
Hi again, Christian. Just ignore my last post above about the 6mhzLarry wrote:Hi Christian, Thanks for the link, I'll be looking into it for sure. AreChristian wrote:

your reading glasses were fine. As my Elegance is the prototype it ran on 6MHz first. Than the "company" (it´s a one man show I believe) changed the design to 8MHz.
You do not need to send the computer there, if you can use a soldering iron do solder/desolder the power connection cables you can do it yourself.
I have the ParExcellence 16MHz too. In an ten game match against the mighty Dallas 68020 it got 4 points out of 10. Not a bad performance.
For the Excellence/ParEx upgrade you don´t need to send computer there too. Just an exchange of PCBs with little soldering.
Still, you have to be careful with the two ribbon cables which connect the PCB of the Excellence with the playing surface. I managed to wreck both cables while exchanging the PCBs, the cables are delicate and I am a German brute.
So back to UK with both my Excellence and the new PCB LOL.
Kind regards
Christian
