looks good for hiarcs.
i was in paderborn today with a friend of mine.
it was nice to watch round 5+6 live. especially round 5 was funny with rybka beeing stopped by toga-cluster and shredder knocked out against hiarcs. Nxg4 and the Rook move by shredder looked not convincing. today stefan meyer-kahlen and also ingo althöfer arrived.
it was nice to see again old friends such as gerd isenberg, dan wolf, vincent, jeroen, but also nice to meet new guys i only knew from internet (timo klaustermeyer and sebastian).
diep lost horrible to johnny. i guess vincent needs to fix this.
paderborn was wonderful as usual. they had a children chess tournament running in the same room and it was nice to see children pla blitz chess. the whole museum was full of chess, childrenchess and adults playing in a tournament too. there were so many people playing chess, i could not find a place in the parking lot for my car.
the whole area was crowded.

that was really a good event- there was something to eat and drink in the tournament hall (of course there was, the tournaments were not organised by the ICGA :-)

i wish that tomorrow hiarcs would win and that we would able to buy this version 12 :-)
i cannot visit tomorrow because of my birthday. but maybe i will watch in the internet.

something seems to be wrong with parsos. rudolf looks good like usual. but the program seems to be broken.
that was good for shredder in round 6.
What seems like a fairy tale today may be reality tomorrow.
Here we have a fairy tale of the day after tomorrow....

The games of the final round are nearing an end. Rybka won and Hiarcs looks certain of a win. So Hiarcs will be on = points with Rybka and the calculators will have to be got out.

We are unbeaten Rybka lost 1 game.

In the last game Hiarcs delivered another big suffering game. It played a very wild opening with 7... gxf6 opening the Kingside rather than going into solid continuations with e.g. 7... Qxf6. Due to this kingside weakness Jonny could equalize the game in the middle and keep the pressure on Hiarcs up to the very strange move 25.Qh5 which allowed Hiarcs to launch a queenside attack.
Jonny definitely did not use its possible chances in this game and thus Hiarcs broke through.

Now let me give you something to look at rather than overwhelming you with words ;-)

A Hearty Congratulations To Team Hiarcs!

From Mexico ..clear across the planet to Germany ..
it is clear that the Rybkian two year reign of Terror is now at an end
in a few days the fish will also lose to a human GM

the Membership roles will swell nicely as Hiarcs has proven itself First in Paderborn

Here are the other results of this 7th and final round:

Diep lost its game against Rybka out of the opening already

ClusterToga was able to defeat IsiChess

ParSOS vs. Spike Draw

Gandalf vs. Shredder still playing in an endgame where Gandalf has 4 pawns and Shredder still got one 1 pawn and its knight left. The game looks drawish, but maybe Gandalf has a little chance left there to win.

For the final standings this means the following: Now that both Hiarcs and Rybka won it was clear before round that they at first glance would be equal in Buchholz without considering the further results.

Before Round: Hiarcs 17.5 Buchholz ; Rybka 19 Buchholz
Their opponents in Round 7: Jonny (4) vs. Hiarcs and Diep (2.5) vs. Rybka

That means both would get added the scores of Jonny and Diep. This is reached now so both engines are at 19 Buchholz.

Now the theoretical calculation goes further, because not everyone played everyone else of the other participants. Rybka did not play Spike and ParSOS, whereas Hiarcs did not play IsiChess and Diep.

So in case IsiChess would have won then Rybka would have been probably ahead. IsiChess lost though and the scores remained the same because of this.

But there was one more critical game between Spike and ParSOS, whose result finally delivered the decision.

Rybka didnt play any of these programs, and could only place its hopes on IsiChess and a win of it to gain the needed Buchholz.

This did not happen and in the game Spike vs. ParSOS, assuming IsiChess wouldnt win a draw already would have been enough, as then Hiarcs gets 1 point (like also in case of a win of ParSOS or Spike).

But definitely decisive was that Isichess could not resist with the black pieces against ClusterToga.

That means: Whatever happens now Hiarcs will win the tournament IPCCC 2007 at Paderborn with equal score but 1 point ahead in Buchholz towards Rybka.

Kind regards from Paderborn so far,
Sebastian Boehme

Gandalf vs. Shredder made a Draw

So with this result I can finally declare :

THE WINNER OF THE IPCCC 2007 at PADERBORN is:

Here are the final standings: 1st is named the engine , 2nd is the progressive score and 3rd is the Buchholz value

1st Hiarcs 5.5 --- 25.5
2nd Rybka 5.5 --- 24.5
3rd ClusterToga 5 --- 27
4th Jonny 4 --- 25.5
5th Shredder 4 --- 24.5
6th Spike 4 --- 23.5
7th Diep 2.5 --- 23
8th Gandalf 2 --- 24
9th IsiChess 1.5 --- 24
10th ParSOS 1 --- 23.5

Kind regards once more,

Fantastic news! :D

Many congratulations and thanks must go to Sebastian who not only operated HIARCS at Paderborn but also prepared (with Harvey) an outstanding opening book for HIARCS to use.

Unfortunately, this is may be too late for the new years honours list but if anyone knows the PM or Queen put a good word in for Sebi! :D

Incredible performance, many many thanks Sebi, Harvey and Team HIARCS. 8)

With such a superb team 2008 offers a lot of promise...
Best wishes,
Mark

Hi Mark,

also a big congratulation to you as an author for putting so much effort into this program.

It was a pleasure for me to suffer and being happy to equal amounts at Paderborn, due to Hiarcs ;-).

May 2008 be a good year for our team and may Hiarcs win the WCCC (dreaming a little dream) ;-)

Kind regards,
Sebastian

Well done!!

The engine played very strong and also human-alike chess. Take a look at the game vs Parsos. White got outplayed in an equal position. G5 was very strong. Very impressive game.

The book was excellent; Sir Sebi won't get fired this time

Have a nice 2008 all!
