Collector's Corner..On Piece Recognition Boards

Post by Steve B »

In anticipation of the upcoming release of the Rev II board ..only the third dedicated chess computer to ever offer piece recognition ..i waxed nostalgic and dusted off the very first dedicated board to offer piece recognition ...
The Mephisto Bavaria Portorose released more then two decades ago
Price lists at the time show the board at over $5000 ..list..but it could be bought for about $2300 with the Portorose 68000 module and about $2500 with the Porto 68020 module

Piece Recognition is a nice feature to have but its usefulness is limited
setting up positions and problems is a snap but after that there is really no other practical use..unless of course you are prone to knocking the pieces off the board every few moves or so
The Bavaria piece set included a pair of "Promoted" or "Joker" Pawns
which had tiny little pawns affixed to their heads .
these pawns can be recognized as any piece or pawn by the board but were mainly meant to be used when a P is promoted to a Q or other piece
the Bavaria also recognized the color of the piece so the Promoted pawns can only be used to replace the proper color

Selective Search Magazine shows a rating for the Bavaria Porto 020 at 2136
when looking for a suitable portable opponent at this Elo level one invariably chooses a Novag as they clearly released the strongest portables following a business model of releasing their new programs in both a portable and desktop version( with the same hardware and software)
SS hows the Sapphire II at 2120(released in 1997 it is the portable equivalent of the desktop Diamond II)

3 game mini match
1 minute per move/Avg.

Game One
Bavaria (Active Style)has white and is out of book on move 9
Sap II is out on move 10
Bavaria Doubles its R's on the H file for a King Side attack while the SapII Strikes back in the center
after the smoke of battle clears Sap II is up a P in a R+5P vs. R+4P ending
ensuing play ..at 1 Min per move .. has the Bavaria typically searching 7 Full/15 Selective and the Sap II 10 Ply

Bavaria manages to win back the P but at the cost of allowing the Sap ll to create a passed C pawn which eventually promotes forcing the Bavaria to give up its R and the game

Game Two
Sap II has white
Both Computers are out of book at move 13
Bavaria chooses a variation of the Ruy in its book which leaves it a P down at move
10 in return for Active piece play.
both computers engage in a wholesale exchange of pieces
leaving only the Q's and One B on the board and a drawish position is reached
Bavaria offers to repeat the position at move 33 but the Sap II ..still a P ahead
over reaches and refuses the offer instead thrusting its K into a mating net
which takes the loss of a B and a P to prevent
Down a B for nothing the Sap II soon resigns

The Third And Final Game Of The Match
Bavaria has white and is out of book on move 10
Sap II is out of book on move 11
Both computers play the opening equally and after several piece and pawn exchanges an early middle game position is reached
Sap II offers to repeat the position on move 25 but this game its the Bavaria's turn to reject the offer .
unlike the Sap II who after rejecting the draw offer in the last game went on to practically self-mate itself..
the Bavaria slowly builds up an attacking position which culminates with a sparkling exchange sacrifice on move 43
in order to avoid mate the Sap II must suffer heavy material loss leaving it down a Q+B+4P vs. 2R+P..a 5 point material deficit
the rest was a matter of technique

Aside from the Bavaria..the only other dedicated computer to ever offer piece recognition was the Tasc which was Released in 1993
Tasc only sold two models(R30/R40) with only two programs (King version 2.2/2.5) and in only two boards(SB20/SB30)..when first released for sale it was advertised as the dedicated chess computers "last stand" in the battle for survival against the coming onslaught of the PC engine
it sold for between $2300-2500..
a nice perk with the Tasc were the two velvet pouches(Red or Grey) which
hold the pieces..

Image

"Selective Search" Mag.Rates the R30(2.5) at 2330 and the R30(2.2) at 2297
There are no Established ratings for the R40 but rating estimates are about 2400(2.5) and about 2325(2.2)
The Bavaria London 68030 was the last program Lang wrote for a dedicated computer and it weighs in at 2301(SS )

for over a decade these two computers were the strongest dedicated computers money could buy until the release of the Resurrection I in 2005
As the long awaited release of the Rev ll has now been pushed into Q1 2013 this provides some extra time for reflection and it seems fitting to bring these two legendary computers together again as they prepare once again to step aside.. making way..for the more powerful Revelation II Piece Recognition board

Five game Tag Team match ..at 1 Min./Avg.
The First 3 Games will pit the Bavaria London against the Tasc R30(v2.2) SB30
The Remaining two games will feature the Tasc R40(v2.5) SB20

R30 will be set for Expert Strength ,Active Style,Tournament Book
R40 will be set for ..Expert Strength,Active Style,Aegon Tournament book
Bavaria London will be set for ..Active Style,Normal Book

Interesting matchups Steve. Yes, I think it's time that Bavaria took on someone its own size. Imagine it having bullied the poor little Saph II like that as retribution for the first match loss.

Re: the Rev II delayed release: I wonder whether it would have been better from a commercial point of view if Ruud had followed the principles of Apple and had kept the introduction of the Rev II a secret until soon before release. Doesn't seem likely that many people would be signing up for the Rev I, knowing that the Rev II was coming out and the long delay in the introduction of the latter can only make it worse.

Over a year ago, I was thinking seriously of buying a Rev II, but now I may just stick with the collection I've created. It is one beautiful looking piece of hardware/firmware though. I notice that the picture now shows the light square in the appropriate position. :)

i can understand you wanting to stay with your current collection philosophy
a hobby is just that..something to do with what little leisure time we have..
and we should simply pursue it as it pleases us and not collect computers that we dont care for
i have to admit i feel this way about the Mysticum
they simply dont appeal to me,,and seem a bit unpleasant to the eye cosmetically..IMHO
however i perfectly understand the interest some folks have in the Mysticum and i applaud this new option collector's now have in our small niche of a hobby

Game One of this Epic Encounter Begins
I will be imposing the "1.c4 Rule"
which states that both computers must open at least one game with 1.c4
failure to comply with this rule will mean immediate listing for sale on Ebay

Bavaria has white.
R30(v2.2 SB30) was out of book first on move 12
At this time control Bavaria typically hit 5/17
R30 hit 3/7 and typically searched about 3000-3500 Positions per sec
Bavaria wins a P early on but lags behind on the development of its Qside pieces
R30 sacs a Second P on move 26 but miscalculates Bavaria's defensive resources
an Endgame of R+3P vs. R+P is reached which Bavaria wins in textbook fashion

Game Two
Both computers are out of Book on move 5
R30 is thrown by Bavaria's 5..Nh6 and is soon saddled with a wrecked Qside pawn structure and a doubled P on d5
Eventually the d5 P falls and Bavaria establishes an outside Passed P on b3 which takes all of R30's defensive forces to block from promoting
Bavaria then advances unopposed on the opposite wing and R30 throws in the towel

Game Four
R40 (v2.5 SB20) holds the home court advantage for the balance of the match
taking the Baton from the R30 saddled with a 1-2
match deficit the pressure is thick as a brick with the possible loss of the match at any moment

R40 has white
Through the vents carved into the back of the wooden program unit the R40's cooling fans can be heard whirling to life
at this time control
R40 typically searches 3 full/7 Selective and about 4000 Positions per sec
R40 throws caution to the wind and essays forth the Kings Gambit which Bavaria Accepts
Both Computers were out of book at move 8
Bavaria manges to cling onto the gambit P and establishes a dangerously advanced P on White's G2
perhaps feeling the pressure of being so close to winning the match it blunders at move 39 allowing the R40 to mount an irresistible King side attack with its heavy pieces

I played thru this game and noticed that black (mephisto) played the shocker 39..Rg8?? which allowed white (Tasc) to find the winner40.e6!. How much time does Mephisto London need to avoid this move?

Yes as i said in the game synopsis section of my post Bavaria blundered at move 39
i am glad to set up the position again as it is easy as pie with piece recognition boards
:P
this is not really the same thing as "In Game" Conditions where each computer is pondering while the opponent is on the move

anyway ..in this position
[fen]r7/p3kp2/2p5/2NbP3/1P1Q1R2/8/q1PK2p1/6Rr w - - 0 51[/fen]

Bavaria starts out with 39..Rxg1 and then switches to 39.. Rg8 after 48 Seconds rating it's position +1.9 expecting white to play 40.Nd3
after 6 minutes 25 Seconds Bavaria switches back to 39..Rxg1

Reviewing the Video Tape Regards
Steve

Thanks for the reply, quite interesting playing thru this topsy turvy game. How did you manage to get the set up board feature to show white at the bottom? Is it something to do with the [fen] labels?
