Aristotle
As Chess Baron is supposedly selling this new dedicated chess computer I wondered if anyone has seen one or knows more about the engines, hardware etc.

Hi Mike
I saw this a while ago and looking at the photo it looks pretty much the same as my Android tablet that I have in front of me, running Aart Bik's, Chess for Android.
Here is a list of engines available.

If you read the downloadable user manual you can see that it is an Android tablet:
"...There are other uses for the Aristotle too, although it’s been
optimised to only be used as a very high specification chess
computer.
You can see other utilities by touching the top-right icon
which is present on every screen. You’ll see a browser, an
email client and the Google Play icon which allows a selection
of applications that can be installed. You can take pictures
with the camera utility, and play music with the music utility,
through headphones, connected speakers, or through the
embedded speaker in the unit itself..."

Chess is like painting the Mona Lisa whilst walking through a minefield.

Yes , indeed I am sorry to say that this does not qualify as a true dedicated chess computer ..... What I would like to see one day though is a true dedicated Computer as large as this Tablet , that of course only plays chess , between 2000 to 2200 Elo , with a low voltage processor between 10 to 20 MHZ , and a very clear and large display ( unlike the later Novag machines )......Steve B wrote:Well that knocks this baby out of collectable considerationMonsieur Plastique wrote:If you read the downloadable user manual you can see that it is an Android tablet:

If is not something like Sapphire that is only for playing chess does not fit as a dedicated chess machine.Steve B wrote:I second that emotionRadioSmall wrote:Yes , indeed I am sorry to say that this does not qualify as a true dedicated chess computer ..... Monsieur Plastic
I missed the User Manual link, thanks for pointing it out to us.
For those who don't own an Android tablet, Aristotle uses Droidfish a excellent free chess app by Peter Ousterlund.
Droidfish is a port of Stockfish and Peter's latest update includes the new Stockfish 4 engine.
Here is the link to Peter's Droidfish web site.

Flickering screen or not, playing chess using tiny pieces on a small, two dimensional display is not the best way to do things.Theo wrote:I think for chess the screen should be E-Ink technology. Staring at a flickering screen for hours can't be so healthy.
I've got a high resolution, large display iPad and while the show given by Stockfish and some other programs is okay, it's just not the same as playing on a physical, decent size board with appropriately sized chessmen. That's why I use a real board for serious play.
If chess players thought that tiny flat pieces were good idea, then such chess sets would have been used for hundreds of years. But they weren't, even though tiny flat sets are much less expensive to fabricate than is customary tournament equipment.
