New robotic arm offering

A kit for the arm is about US$300 in price. Material choices are white/black acrylic and laser-cut wood.

The arm can lift a 450 gram beverage can, so it should have no problem lifting a 50 gram chessman. It is not clear exactly how large of a chessboard can be used; decent sized perhaps, but maybe not one with 55 mm squares like the DGT board.

I would get two of these just to watch two different programs do battle.

Grippers

Post by sje »

The robot arm can use one of several different grippers. Those seen in the above photograph aren't suitable for moving a chessman, so a different and possibly custom gripper is needed.

The gripper in the furthest arm uses a suction cup instead of a pincer. It could work with a set of chessmen if each man had a flat, smooth top.

These arms are sold as kits and that's a good thing because if the owner is smart enough to perform the initial assembly, then they're probably smart enough to make repairs as needed.
