Human Match vs RadioShack 2250XL

Post by RadioSmall »

I have started an 8 game match against my RadioShack Champion 2250XL .
Time control is 40 moves in 2 hours followed by 20 moves in 1 hour , repeating if necessary .Alternating colors, touch move rules apply.I was previously defeated 12 games to nothing in my Match against the Designer 2265 :http://www.hiarcs.net/forums/viewtopic. ... highlight=
The first game is now complete and has resulted in a 41 move draw(by 3 fold repetition) .This is a good start for me .I will update this thread as the Match continues :

I had a very quick look with Hiarcs on my laptop:

The R.S. 2250XL is the unit with the large pieces and that nifty LCD screen on the upper right. This is a really nice looking machine that is highly sought after in mint condition by many collectors.

We look forward to viewing your games, and good luck in the match :!:

It's Achilles heel is the squares that are so stiff you have to press them
with your fingers. Otherwise it is a very nice unit. We had a debate a
while back here over who programmed it. It was, of course, Franz Morsch.
Drop over to:

where you will see a lot of work has been put into clone testing, including
the RS2250. A really neat and enjoyable site.

Will enjoy the match RS

the 225O XL could become quite rare and valuable
especially since it seems Radio Shack is about to go belly up

This is disheartening news. They started out as a leather goods company in Fort Worth, Texas (Tandy Leather), expanded exponentially during the CB Radio fad of the ‘70s, but were already taking losses -- due to Japanese home electronics giants -- by the late ‘80s.

I frequented Radio Shack in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s period, knew several of the store managers, and received the periodic sales flyers in the mail. They were a middleman company, and most of the chess computers were custom made for Radio Shack by SciSys/Saitek. These were flying off the shelves in the early to mid-80s, and I was under the impression that the R.S. labeled units outsold the SciSys units due to much better marketing and greater visibility.

Radio Shack had become an American icon in the consumer electronics industry and will be greatly missed.

 Deeply saddened regards,

Second game is now complete , and has resulted in an astounding win for the RadioShack 2250 : This game that featured opposite side castling , contained just about everything under the sun : Sacrifices , passed pawn races , wild king side attacks , you name it , it had it. After I survived a wild kingside attack , the game went into a queen pawn ending which I eventually lost .PC analysis shows that the move 48...Kg6 was the deciding error , although it is a rather subtle mistake .This game was very complicated and contained many many wild positions .At one point there were 4 queens on the board !! Very interesting game! From what I've heard the Radio Shack 2250XL is a gk2100 clone? If I own a Mephisto Challenger, is it worth getting a 2250? Is there enough of a disparity in playing style between the two to justify adding it to my collection?

Yep.... although it is a GK2100 clone, there are plenty enough changes to
make it a worthwhile addition. So many changes that some are adamant
it's a different programmer.
It's the biggest plastic pressure sensory chess comp ever made, AFAIK,
and includes a display of the playing surface, so if you like you can play
without pieces.

Thanks for your input Larry! I'm actually doing some price scouting now. I saw one of these units a few months ago. It's kind of a shame I passed it up knowing that it's play is distinct.

Not so sure about that
off hand.. i think the Peri Epsilon ..with its piece draw fully extended might be a bit wider although maybe its not bigger in length
we might have to get a ruling on the construction though
the playing board is plastic although the rest of it is wood

I never realized that the Peri Epsilon is that wide, but then I guess it would be with the two compartments.

Third game is now complete . A quick win by the RadioShack Champion 2250XL .The game required that I find the very tricky move 15.e5!! , which of course I did not find , instead after 15.g3?? it all went downhill .So 2 loses and one draw after 3 games : Here are the moves of game 3 :

Fourth game is now complete .A win by The RadioShack 2250 XL .However this time , unlike the previous 3 games , I reached a completely won position .According to PC Analysis , the RS 2250XL is more than four pawns down after 27.a5 . However as it is the case most of the time , winning a won game is hard , more so against computers .Intead I played 27...Rf2?? .After the time pressure blunder 29....Qxh2?? , my fate was sealed..... (by the way the winnig move is 27...Nge5!!)
