Collector Location Database

Post by Brian B »

Is there a database of dedicated chess computer collectors by location somewhere?

With these computers continuing to multiply here at the house, it occurred to me that there would be stretches of time where some of these computers would sit idle, possibly for many months at a time. No sense having these things just sitting around in storage. If another collector were nearby, even within a reasonable drive time, we could share different computers for a time. Give someone a chance to play something for a while without having to go through a buying process only to find out that they didn't care for the game for some reason. Of course, there would need to be an understanding of how to proceed in case something breaks, but other than that I think it would be fun. In my case, I could see lending a computer to someone now and then getting it back in another six months or so.

Thoughts? By the way, if anyone is close by, I live in the metropolitan St Louis area.

Sharing the collection regards,
Brian B

Hi Brian

there is no exact list of the addresses of all known collectors
i can tell you that the vast majority of collectors live in Europe and most in Europe live in Germany(with Holland a distant second)
ill make a rough guess as follows

Percentage of known collectors:
Germany-65%
Rest of Europe-20%
USA-5%
South America-5%
Australia/New Zealand=5 %

Concentrated Regards

very optimistic 5% for South América Steve B! What would be the absolute number, approximate collectors in Germany + Holland?

I had a sense there were many more dedicated chess computer collectors in Europe, but had no idea there were so few in the USA. Shipping these dedicated computers around from place to place to share would probably be asking for trouble.

well it would just be a guess but i would say perhaps 150-200
perhaps 300 total collectors Worldwide
now this is for actual "collectors"

i imagine there are thousands of people in the USA alone that have at least one or two chess computers but they could not be considered a "collector"

Guesstimating Regards

Someone might be able to help here. It was about two or so years ago
that someone (I think in Europe) was interviewing chess computer
collectors and placing the text of the interviews here on this forum. Maybe
on other forums too. The interviews were obviously not in person, but
online. I personally did not take part, the reason being that it was expected
that a photo or yourself be included. I'm not computer savvy when it
comes to posting photos, but I'm able to do that now. I've got a good
camera that will do the job.
If the person I refer to is available and willing, we could perhaps
give and post interviews of a few of the new arrivals here on the forum.
Looking forward to any replies...

For starting if we use the link of mychess there are 16 collectors 14 are from Europe and 2 from America. 1 is from North America and 1 is from South America. This means that 87,5% of the collectors are from Europe 6,25% are from North America and 6,25% are from South America. So Steve´s first guess was very close. Also Larry is writing that he did not went into this interview so probably that first guess was even closer.

For sure there are more collectors but most of them are from Europe.

The term "collector" is itself fairly fuzzy. One person may have over
the decades happened upon six or more, mostly gifts, and is not a
collector. Meanwhile a collector upstart may in his early days only have
three or four. There are only about four or so collectors in Australia to
my knowledge, and at least two of those favour handhelds. Easy to
understand, you can store a good size collection in one corner of the
closet.

It should also be remembered that not every collector uses the internet
so we don't hear or know about them
the hobby dates back to the mid-1970's and folks in that age bracket tend to not be so internet savy

I personally know two collectors from the US ..guys in their 70's who don't go online at all..ever
I imagine this would be the case everywhere in the world

Archeological Regards
