$1/2 million early Apple under hammer

Post by Larry »

I snipped this piece from the coffee shop's newspaper the other day.
Here is the text:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An early Apple device sold by Steve Jobs from his parents' garage goes
under the hammer in New York next month valued at $400,000 to
$600,000 in an increasingly competitive computer relic market.
Christie's says the Apple-1 is the only surviving such computer
documented to have been sold directly by the late Apple founder to a
customer from the garage in Los Altos, California. It goes on sale
on December 11.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My question is, are early chess computers considered part of the
"computer relic market"? We all know that the market generally
is a fickle whore. I never started my collection to make capital gains
from it, but the knowledge that well chosen machines hold their
value adds to the thrill of the collection, IMO. Of course a collection
appreciating in value gives you ammunition when you are in an
argument with your wife over the space and financial outlay of the
collection.

If there is anything that I have learned with collecting things and my wife, it is that all my pinball machines and chess computers tend to look alike after a period of time. To the untrained eye, a Mephisto Milano looks pretty close to a Mephisto Atlanta, or Milano Pro. One Mephisto module looks pretty much like any other module. I never lie about any of it, the fact that some of them look very similar eliminates some questions. That Revelation II, though, that one kind of stuck out a bit. My wife has her stuff and I have mine. When her parcels are delivered, I don't ask her any questions. I just hand her the box and smile.

Maybe the value of Chess Computers will increase when some of the programmers pass over to the other side, much like artists paintings or musicians music becomes more valuable one the artist dies.

On The Flip Side...

there is also the possibility that with the passage of time...all eproms will lose their information and become totally blank rendering all dedicated chess computers useless and worthless
I have heard of collectors running around ...pell mell..arms akimbo..with eprom copiers ..frantically copying all eproms for this dreaded day
in addition..other computer components will sooner or later become defective and impossible to replace
the trick here is to die well before this happens

Timing Is Everything Regards

Do you want the really bad news?.... some chips are even write
protected. So when one goes belly up, it's game over for that comp.
