Look again. Carlsen's set (on main photo http://www.sochi2014.fide.com) is a horrid mix of low-budget pieces.

I guess it's an intentional joke. Norvegian humor I don't get.

Hi Izmet,

I did notice that Vishy does seem to have the proper set, but Magnus has a strange mix. The first giveaway was the tiny Rook. I then noticed the Bishops? Very strange.

I believe a set of the beautiful eastern BCE would have been more appropriate for such a prestigious event.

I wish. :)

However, the games are actually played with Studio Anne Carlton WC set, designed by Danny Weil of Pentagram. A very fine set also.

This 3rd game brings back Anand to the match but in this fourth game he must come up with a super strong defense and play in safe mode, if he takes risk with an 1.e4 oppening he will have a hard time again. It is a 12 game match

A sicilian in the fourth game, probabably we will not see anymore 1..e5 from Anand with black pieces or at least a spanish. Maybe in the spanish oppening Carlsen sails better than Anand.

 Agreed. Hopefully at the very least no more Berlin variation in this match.

Well, I predicted that Vishy would fare better playing outside of India, and thus far he has exceeded my expectations.

Round 4 saw Vishy saddled with split Ps on the queenside, but he managed to defend accurately, and Magnus was unable to make progress in the end.

Let’s see how it goes tomorrow…

 Hangin' on the edge of my seat regards,
John

If you have Hiarcs Chess Explorer:

Is that just a gzipped copy of Mark Crowther's complete file (not the live one from his site)?

Game 6 and 7 Carlsen with white. Good for Carlsen tough for Anand.

In the WCC black pieces mostly draw or lose few wins.

i had the dual processor Fidelity EAG V5(2052 elo) already set up so i fed it the positions at the 40/2 level

[fen]6rr/1k3p2/1pb1p1np/p1p1P2R/2P3R1/2P1B3/P1BK1PP1/8 w - - 0 26[/fen]
V5 will play 26..Nxe5 ..scoring the position as ahead 1.62

[fen]r7/1k1r1p2/1p2p1np/2p1P2R/b1P1B1R1/p1P2P2/P3K1P1/2B5 w - - 0 32[/fen]
for ..32 it will play Ka7 but it scores itself behind -2.85

V5 1-Carlson 0 Regards
Steve

I don't think Nxe5 would be hard for even the lower level dedicated units, so I am not sure that particular move is of much interest. Kd2 for white was - let's be honest - a low club level mistake. My Mephisto Maestro portable (~1600 ELO), for example, found Nxe5 in a few seconds, complete with the evaluation to prove it saw the winning combo.

As for Ka7, I think that is much tougher and of more interest. Needless to say my Maestro did not find the optimal move and blocked with the bishop instead as per the game itself.

I am interested to see what the middle class golden age dedicated machines make of move 32 - especially the 8 bit Mephistos and commensurate Novags, etc.

Now starts the second part of the match with Carlsen over Anand. Carlsen most probably opening will be 1.e4 with this he has won 2 games. Anand lost with 1..e5 and now with 1..c5. What will he choose now?. This second half will be great pressure for Anand and Carlsen again with white.

To Satisfy your curiosity i randomly pulled an 8 bit Mephisto and Novag of off their respective shelves(Golden Age Section)
i set up the positions and let them go at it at the 40/2 level

Mephisto Rebel 5.0(1827 elo) will play ...
25..Ne5 1.38
32..Bc6 -1.41

Novag Super VIP(1684 elo) will play ...
25..Ne5 1.80
32...Bc6 -1.52

Golden Age Regards
Steve
