Hello,
I frequently search for games of a specific variant of an opening in a database.
The main line can be found by ECO very quickly.
But going one step deeper and search for a specific line is cumbersome.
Example:
B12 is Caro Kann.
The same ECO contains i.e. Tartakower lines as well as the Advance ones.
If I need all Tartakower games I actually scroll down game by game and
copy the ones found manually to a new database.
(Which is supported a bit by OS X keyboard shortcuts, but is still time consuming.
Though: the variants name is available in the extra tags "Opening")
So the feature request is to make variants searchable in HCE.
Thanks a lot in advance for taking it into consideration,
Uwe

Hello Mark,
Thanks for your reply.
It's somehow a bit trickier, than I thought in the first view.
If, as in my case, the extra tag "Opening" or "Variation" exist,
it works.
But: I also got pgn's without these extra tags and HCE
even shows the Opening and variation lines above
the game notation.
For the latter I cannot search.
...I am confused…
Kindest regards and Happy Easter holidays
Uwe

Just to clarify here, if the PGN does not have an Opening name tag you cannot search on that tag.
The names given in HCE are derived from the game moves not the Opening tag.
Optionally in Prefs->Advanced you can get HCE to add ECO codes to existing PGN games, if you do that you will be able to search on ECO codes.
