This length outage is almost unheard of around here. The problem was
the trees falling over. And I mean big ones....pulled out of the ground
roots and all, flopping over roads. Real sad about any car that was in
the way. The repair teams had to prioritise... the roads have to be
cleared first, then the power gets some attention. Since the rain was
almost relentless it would be dangerous working up the power poles.
This made my wife and I appreciate life in this period in history. Those
born a century earlier had a life long power outage. Of course they were
not aware of it so it did'nt hurt them. But it hurt us. It's easy to forget
just how much of our life requires electricity.
Good to be back online again...
We went out for our evening meal and on the way stopped to look at
a few boats that had been washed ashore.... wooden boats
maybe 30-40 feet long thrown against the rocks like toys.
L
38 hour power outage here

I was living out in Suffolk when Sandy struck. We were about 4 days without power, and I didn’t own a gas powered generator. The people that did own generators soon ran out of fuel, and were unable to replenish their supply due to a concurrent severe gasoline shortage. When one of our stations did manage to obtain a fuel shipment, I arrived 45 minutes prior to opening, and still waited on line for about 5 hours to fill my tank.
Really makes you appreciate the value of underground electrical cabling and….

Hi Larry,
I was wondering how you were coping (for those who don't know, Larry lives around the same distance north of Sydney as I do south and we have copped massive storms in the entire region over the last week).
Good to know you are still OK. The damage caused by the storm looks terrible. I was amazed to see some of the railway stations so far underwater that instead of there being visible railway tracks the stations just looked like swimming pools.
I've often cursed the good and the bad of living 3/4 the way up the top of a pretty decent hill that is one of the highest points in the region down here. I still had waterfalls running down my backyard and over the retaining walls. Made me very thankful that years ago I had the landscapers add extra drainage - the amount of run-off going through that drain was unprecedented.
This morning I will be going out and trying to start cleaning up the back yard. Just in the last week weeds have grown from nothing to 2 feet high. Not kidding!
I imagine our insurance premiums will all go up now...

Chess is like painting the Mona Lisa whilst walking through a minefield.
