Truncated main line in the Analysis Explorer

Post by Eric Wainwright »

Hello,

Something that has been bugging me for awhile: sometimes HIARCS will just show a truncated main line in the Analysis Explorer pane, not the full line. For example,

-1.44/25 30.a3 Bd5 35.Rc1

Or, sometimes it will just show the first move in the main line,

-1.44/25 30.a3

It doesn’t seem to matter which engine has been selected for the analysis. Does anyone know what’s going on? Is this a bug?

I’m using HCE 1.8 on Mac OS 10.9.4.

Thanks,
-Eric

This is common to chess engines because they use a search with a narrowed search window, sometimes the search fails high or low outside that window and at that point the engine may not know anything about the best line it just knows the move and a lower or upper bound on the score. It then spends time researching the move with an adjusted search window which then eventually resolves to a longer continuation and more accurate score.
Best wishes,
Mark
