Your are completely wrong on this issue ....I emphasize it has nothing to do with opening book.........All this shows it the huge hyperbole that surrounds programs like Stockfish and Komodo ..... In the very ignorant talk chess forum people blindly assume everything must lose to Komodo and SF ... Hopefully this REAL WorldChampionship will be a Huge wakeup call for them........Carl Bicknell wrote:The Komodo team have really let themselves down with their openings.
Great engine, terrible opening book.

NO ONE is claiming "everything must lose to SF or Komodo". But we know its elo, and therefore we know its one of the favourites if all other factors below are equal.RadioSmall wrote: Your are completely wrong on this issue ....I emphasize it has nothing to do with opening book.........All this shows it the huge hyperbole that surrounds programs like Stockfish and Komodo ..... There are a variety of things which affect the outcome of any tournament:
a) The number of games played (the lower the more variance)
b) The strength of the engine
c) the speed of the hardware
d) the opening book
To say the opening book has NOTHING to do with it is crazy - the HIARCS team THEMSELVES sell opening books precisely because they DO add elo and affect the outcome of games!!
Agreed. The critical game was decided by an endgame error. We won't know the full situation until we see the PGN files annotated with engine evaluations and search depths. Say what you will about Rybka, I miss Rajlich's opening prep and commentary. This event was once used to advance opening theory.RadioSmall wrote:Your are completely wrong on this issue ....I emphasize it has nothing to do with opening book.........All this shows it the huge hyperbole that surrounds programs like Stockfish and Komodo ..... Massive clusters should not be underestimated! Remember that in 2013 Jonny on the same cluster was getting 2Bnps and reaching middle-game depths of 40 ply!

I think there's some confusion here.IanO wrote:Agreed. The critical game was decided by an endgame error. Komodo lost to Jonny because of an endgame mistake - granted. But that doesn't necessarily mean Komodo had a good book.
HIARCS came out of the opening better than Komodo. That's not a comment on Komodo the engine or, for that matter, HIARCS the engine.
All I'm simply saying is the Komodo book isn't as strong as one might expect from an engine which (in some cases) is hundreds of elo above its rivals.

Wasn't the consensus of opinion that Komodo should try and get out of established book lines as soon as possible to enable its superior knowledge to come into effect? I find it strange then that there should be complaints directed at the Komodo book and its author when it appears that is what was attempted. All I'm simply saying is the Komodo book isn't as strong as one might expect from an engine which (in some cases) is hundreds of elo above its rivals.
With respect to "Komodo's 100's of Elo above its rivals" that is derived from relatively short line openings and is not truly reflective of performance based on the lines that could be expected in top competition when they are more likely to be based on established openings knowledge especially if the choice is directed by the engine author and his team who better understand the engine's strengths and weaknesses? The probability is that Komodo's relative performance differential is significantly less in the latter circumstance when engine opening knowledge may have little impact on the outcome. Perhaps if Elo was based on engine matches using longer contemporary opening lines the expectancy would not have been so high.
Seems to me excuses now forthcoming for Komodo's failure to wipe the floor with the opposition.
