How To Win A Black Queen In 11 Moves

Post by fourthirty »

We covered this fantastic position in a class at the Mechanics' this week.

Can you (or your dedicated unit) find a way to win the black queen in 11 moves?

It is really a quite comical destruction of black's rear ranks.

White to move...

Ah yes, the black king is trapped, and is forced to shuttle from g8 to h8 while white mops up the 7th rank, etc.

A classic example of positional victory regards,

The tactical pattern is called the WindMill, easy for humans to see and I suppose computers will see it too, only time I think computers will fail is if they go for a perpetual check as White is down some considerable material at the start and the bank balance does not go into black till 11 ply.

Thanks Cubeman. I didn't realize it was called the WindMill.

I had the same thought. I wonder if some dedicated units will force the draw due to the material imbalance? If I have a chance this week I'll set up the position on some dedicates.

Hi,

the windmill-principle appears seldom in tournament games but a great example is Bryne-Fischer N.Y. 1956 where Fischer apllies it.

It sounds like you’re alluding to “The Game Of The Century” whereby a 13-year-old Bobby Fischer defeated Donald Byrne, a leading American chess master.

Very interesting Gerhard and John.

I recall reading about Bobby's brilliant queen sacrifice in ENDGAME (17... Be6!!), but the book didn't go into specifics beyond that.

Additionally (sadly), this game is not covered in Bobby's "My 60 Memorable Games", so I never took the time to study the game.

Now that I look at the game from John's link, I can see how Bobby used the windmill immediately following the queen sacrifice to win a rook, two bishops, and a pawn from Byrne. Fantastic!

The game is covered in great detail in Fischer's first chess book
"Bobby Fischer's Games of Chess"...published in 1959 by
Simon and Schuster

Thanks Steve.

I own his copies of "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" & "My 60 Memorable Games", but I don't have the title listed above.

I'll have to add that one to the chess library!

Going Fisching on Amazon Regards...
Greg
