Thanks for posting these links, Mike!
These industrial robots play a mean game of table tennis, as well.
Check out the match: KUKA vs. Timo Boll
The second clip featuring the Novag Robot Adversary was my favorite scene in the film.
I actually played a game with this unit back when it was released @ I.C.D.
HAL says HELLO Regards,
John

Yes, Steve, I did notice the display mounted above the unit. Was that something that was just mocked up for the film? And what about that little hand that extends after the game?
Also, the unit that I played @ I.C.D. (circa 1981) didn’t have a speech processor. It did, however, feature emotions (antics) that could be switched on or off.
This state-of-the-art unit was selling for a whopping $1,600 which was…
a lot of money in those days regards,
John

Maybe you do not know, but there is a film of about 1981 or so where the hero appears playing ches challenger 1,3 or 7, impossible to say...Steve B wrote:Yes the Infamous Novag Robot AdversaryCyberchess wrote: Also, the unit that I played @ I.C.D. ...and the movie is...
The Dogs of War (1980, Dir: John Irvin) James Shannon (Christopher Walken)
The scene happens at around the first 20% or less of the move, which by the way is interesting to see....

Nice find, Fern!
Thanks to YouTube, we can enjoy this vintage gem in 720p HD resolution.
I’m pretty sure that’s my old faux wood Chess Challenger 7 unit Christopher Walken’s playing.
Earlier Chess Challenger units usually, but not always, featured the French lacquered wooden pieces.
Cinematic Chess Regards,
John

One of my all-time favorite high tech chess scenes comes from the 1976 film, “Futureworld” starring Peter Fonda and Blythe Danner.
Today the technology exists to realize a holographic chess computer, though is currently priced way beyond reach of the consumer market.
In another ten years perhaps we will be playing on a set like the one in the film.
Sadly, I couldn’t locate any HD clips that contained the chess scene. Short of buying the film (highly recommended), the scene is only viewable on the original 1976 English Trailer or the Deutsch Trailer.
It’s All An Illusion Regards,
John
