In Game Three...

MCG was out of book at move 10..SD at move 12
The SD strikes right back in an enjoyable swashbuckling tour de force
on move 15 SD advances its e pawn to the 6th rank launching an attack
instead of 0-0 to safety the MCG missteps stranding itself in the center of the board..by move 28 white is up a Q for a R and instead of Resigning with honor(as the SD did in game 2) it lumbered on ..the rest of game is of no therapeutic value

In Game Four..

Both Computers were out of book at move 6!
a 110 move marathon!
both computers played solidly with no positional or material blunders
several times the computers purposely avoided 3 fold rep draws and were shuffling pieces back and forth
i was preparing to adjudicate the game a draw when suddenly around move 86 the MCG started to drift losing the thread of the position
things went down hill rapidly from there and it was soon in a lost position
personally i think it just got tired from playing 3 games today

Yep, unless it is leading in the endgame which gives it a plan, it lacks endgame skills or patience. Always likely to lose in an endgame.

Come on Nick :o That's going a little overboard don't you think? How does a chess computer lack patience? Sometimes a dedicated machine will look weak in an endgame simply because it lacks the capability to do what even a 1950 FIDE ELO human can do with ease - look 30 plus plies ahead in certain situations. Or make a judgement on a particular position that would take complex programming or a 50 ply lookahead to achieve artificially.

I just think it a little unfair to criticise the endgame of any dedicated chess computer this side of a Revelation let alone a plastic toy costing a couple of hours of wages, because quite frankly, the only silicon chess players I have come across that play an endgame at (male) FM strength or better are state of the art chess engines. They are the only entities capable of seeing the long term implications of endgame tactics and strategies.

How many dedicated chess computers can you name, for example, that show an immediate drop in evaluation of well over 2 points on white's move 30 (h5) in the game I played against it as black posted earlier? I tried this position out on my machines and they all keep humming along like nothing had happened. Every engine I put it into (Fritz, Schredder and HIARCS), however, saw the move as a blunder almost instantly.

I think any chess computer that plays the endgame as well as MCG is doing pretty well for what it is to be honest. A 15 ply plus lookahead in a late endgame is normally good enough to avoid serious blunders and it is certainly much better than you would get out of the strongest Morsch dedicated machines, for example.

Also, most games here are rapid ones. As I have mentioned before, the MCG is like the Fidelity and Saitek programs - the playing strength grows in a linear nature with time. The opponent in this case has a logarithmic increase in playing strength with time (Star Diamond), as is the case with pretty much all Novags, Morsch and Schroder dedicated machines. Thus the advantage in rapid play is always going to be with the Novag.

I suspect the MCG will earn an SSDF rating higher than the current 2025 ELO held by the Star Diamond / Star Sapphire, since those ratings are earned at classical time controls.

At the very least, your criticism should be seen in the context as a relative one and not an absolute (though as I say, I'd argue it is even a relative one because I believe the MCG is extremely well balanced in all facets of the game, as it is in terms of a balance of aggressive / solid / tactical / positional play.

In The Final Game ..

Both Computers were out of book at move 8
having played a 110 mover in game 4 both computers seemed
to want to get this one over with as quickly as possible
wholesale piece exchanges take place from the getgo and
by move 19 we have a R+P endgame!
however SD manages to blunder away a P at move 33 which then prolongs the game
even a P down it looked like the SD would be able to hold the draw but this time it was its turn to toss the draw away blundering a second P at move 57
MCG coasted to the win from there

SD Resigns here

The Match was a tie at 2.5 all

i wont be making any sweeping generalizations about the MCG based upon only these 5 games(or 8 if we count the WM games) but i will say this

its been ages since we have seen a new dedicated computer playing at this level selling for such a low price
anyone with even a mild interest in dedicated chess computers would be well served if they bought it

as you know all SSDF ratings for dedicated ches computers were lowered by 100 elo .. across the board .. in the year 2000..so 2025 is really 2125 in our terms
at 40/2 the SD/SS is rated 2173 by SS and 2142 by the Wiki

my guess is that the MCG will come in very close to the SD/SS's rating +/- 50 elo

Monsieur Plastique wrote:Well I am really chuffed. I was feeling relatively good and reasonably alert today, so I decided to challenge the Millennium Genius to another hardcore 40 moves in 2 hour game (playing level was set to Tournament 6). The machine was set to play at full strength with pondering on (ECO off). I played within my clock allowance and of course there were no take backs allowed. So this was a serious tournament game under tournament conditions.

Inspired by Klute's positional blitz victory over his machine, I decided to employ the just-discussed Bird's Defense as black in a classical time control Ruy Lopez. After a tough and very enjoyable positional fight I am proud to say that I finally defeated the pesky little machine in what ended up being a King and pawn endgame which should have been a draw but for an inaccuracy by Genius on move 30. Mind you, subsequent analysis by HIARCS indicated that I made one inaccurate move as well (move 33), but the correct reply was obviously beyond the search horizon of Genius (which thanks to hash tables was about 14 plies excluding extensions at this point).

Still, I am really proud of this nonetheless. The machine has defeated me twice over the last week - the first time quite convincingly, the second time it outplayed me from a slightly advantageous endgame position. This time the tables were turned. This is actually my first ever victory in a serious tournament game against a chess playing entity that genuinely exceeds 2000 ELO in playing strength.

As Larry Kaufmann said all those years ago, even class "B" players (I feel that I am probably high class B strength) can defeat the strongest Mephisto occasionally. I am not going to pretend for one moment I could beat this thing in a match and I am not going to pretend that I am a 2100 ELO chess player. But still, I am sure we have all had proud moments when we defeated our plastic nemesis fair and square and this was one of those (probably rare!) times.

This machine has rapidly become my favourite in all my collection. Yes, it is very plasticky but it is the closest I am ever going to get to playing a really strong human. I am even contemplating saving up for a third machine since I can see this is going to get a lot of use over the years, especially with it's wide opening book and transposition capabilities.

Revenge of the Bird Brain Regards
A great Game ! A genuine man vs machine game worthy of a Human Grandmaster ! I agree with Monsieur Plastique that winning one game is very different than winning a match ...Part of the attraction of playing dedicated chess computers is that there is a chance of winning maybe once every 10 games (which does not exist at the PC level ) ...I just got through analyzing this game with Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition at 180 seconds per move and here are my findings :For Chess Genius : Move 29 is a 1 pawn error (game is even before that ) ,Move 30 is a 2 pawn error (game is lost after this )....Move 34 is a six pawn error (white is only slighly worse before that ) ..The Human player committed a six pawn error by playing 33...Ke5?? letting the computer back into the game ....I cannot really criticize this move by Monsieur plastique as there are many examples of misplayed pawn endings even at the GM level....Amazingly for chess Genius 34. c4 would have held the game .....( It takes 4 seconds for Chess Genius running on my android tablet to find this although its first choice is 34.c3......).......

Rank2 behind the chessmachine.

I did a few MORE games versus the king 2.54 agg. and also vs. Rebel 3.0 on that hardware and Millennium Chess Genius lost all 4 games.
I would say it has not the slightest chance against the stronger The King 2.54. So this machine gives the END of the ELO to the top.

If the next version has the following changes I will buy one.

Get rid of the curved sides, they serve no purpose.

I like square design and that area can be used for taken pieces.

Remove the coordinates from every square and put them outside the edges where they belong.

Make the squares non glossy.

Waiting patiently regards

Not that it addresses your other concerns, but the squares do actually have the traditional textured mat finish we associate with sensory boards. The glossy squares are the result of a publicity mock-up that was required prior to actual manufacturing commencement. Mind you, the glossy underside of the unit serves no practical purpose and should have been replaced with a mat finish similar to everywhere else.

But I certainly wouldn't mind paying more for a better housing up to say, the Saitek or Mephisto standards of the 80s when in my opinion the companies were at their best in terms of robustness and aesthetics. And I'd pay a lot more for a luxury wood housing if it really did come up to the best Mephisto standards from the 1980s in every way.

Absolutely fantastic work. There is no substitute for games at classical time controls and I think it lends credibility to what I have been saying - the program improves in a linear fashion with time which gives it an advantage over most others at these speeds.

Are these games going to count in the SSDF rating?

?

I have no contact with them.

I am editing the games in the moment, writing an article.

Very annoying feature
in fact i will call it a design flaw

the back light going off after 1 min of no key/square presses is simply annoying
you play a game with a long time control and if the computer is on the move for more then a minute the back light turns off and you need to turn it back on to see the move on the screen

i was using batteries exclusively because the dang adapter cord is 4 ft long which has to be the shortest adapter cord ever sold in the history of modern day electronics
the manual states that the backlight will turn off after 1 minute in an effort to conserve the batteries .. so i hired an electrician to come into my home and move the wall outlet closer to my desk so i can plug in the adapter and then not have to deal with the nonsensical backlight

well guess what?
even with the adapter plugged in the dang backlight turns off anyway!
that is totally rediculous and ...
Moronic Regards
Steve
P.S.didnt really hire an electrician ..but still..

Use a normal light instead the backlight.
