and at nearly 60 I can say I have gotten worse as I grow older
I would mark the start of my decline at just around 50
went from playing third board for my University team(in my early 20's) ...to becoming bored with the game today..
well not bored exactly .. more like.. impatient
I don't even play long games against my computers anymore
nothing slower then game/30..usually game in 5 or 10
here is an example of what i am talking about
from a game i played this morning against the Novag Super Conny(5 Mhz)

i achieved this position as Black after 66 moves
[fen]8/7R/8/8/1r6/2p1k3/2Kp4/8 w - - 7 4[/fen]

an easy win...played continued

67.Re7+ Re4 68.Rh7 Rd4 69.Rh1 d1=Q+ 70.Rxd1 Rxd1 71.Kxd1 Kd3 *

FINAL POSITION
[fen]8/8/8/8/8/2pk4/8/3K4 w - - 0 1[/fen]

Here the Conny Expert Resigned

accumulated clock times:
Conny 7 min.22Sec.
Me 5 min.51Sec.

now heres the kicker..Conny was playing on its lowest level..level 1..5 sec avg. per move
years ago i would consider this a shallow victory
but TODAY...it makes no difference at all too me
i get just as much satisfaction today beating it at its lowest level then i would have had years ago beating it at 40/2

A Win Is A Win Regards
Steve

Big mistake Connie, she should have insisted it was Black's move and refuse to play on and remain adamant that its Black's turn to move :P

Well that's pretty good Steve. I for one have never ever defeated any Novag machine from Constellation upwards at blitz. I have drawn, but even that is very rare. Same goes with any Schroder machine. Infact I think you could give me 100 tries to beat these machines at 5 minutes per game, you wouldn't see one single victory from me. And the older I get, the worse I get at blitz so the chances of ever getting this monkey off my back are between Buckley's and nil.

really
that is interesting
completely opposite for me
i win fairly regularly at blitz games against my computers and i always try to keep to the time control
on the other hand ...i cant remember the last time i won a game at a time control longer then 1 Min or longer

And here's an Express 16K portable humbling an SC at 40/2, fair and square:

[Event "Comp 40/2"]
[Site "Blue Mountains"]
[Date "2003.??.??"]
[Round "3"]
[White "Express 16K"]
[Black "Super Constellation"]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "D34"]
[PlyCount "69"]

1. d4 e6 2. c4 d5 3. cxd5 exd5 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. Nf3 Be7 6. g3 O-O 7. Bg2 c5 8. O-O
Nc6 9. Bg5 cxd4 10. Nxd4 h6 11. Bf4 Nxd4 12. Qxd4 Bg4 13. Bxd5 Nxd5 14. Nxd5
Bg5 15. Be5 Bxe2 16. Bxg7 Bxf1 17. Bxf8 Qxf8 18. Rxf1 Qd6 19. h4 Be7 20. Re1
Bf8 21. Re2 Kh7 22. Qe4+ Kh8 23. Ne3 Qb6 24. Nc4 Qa6 25. Ne5 f5 26. Qf3 f4 27.
gxf4 Rc8 28. Qe4 Rc1+ 29. Kh2 Qxa2 30. Ng6+ Kg8 31. Nxf8 Qf7 32. Ng6 Rd1 33. f3
a6 34. Ne5 Qf6 35. Rg2+ 1-0

SC of course resigned here, acknowledging the superiority of peg-sensory portable plastic.
The Klute offers you the white pieces and the advantage of the first move.

Well that is rather self-effacing of you given you rarely play such games. For my own part, in order to quell the need for imagined glories and self-gratification, I tend to play blitz either against a hobbled HIARCS or a PowerBrain portable.

10-nil to me Regards

Hey, this reminds me of my main claim to chess fame. A genuine blitz victory (with a caveat) over 32 bit Junior running on a circa year 2000 PC (so about 2650 ELO from memory).

Mind you, I needed a bit of help. I thought I had actually lost or drawn the endgame, then Klute comes walking in, casually glances at the position and then says: "why don't you play this move?". Of course it won the game.

So my score against GM engines at blitz is actually

1 to 999 Regards

Now i rarely play longer games ..as i mentioned
but i used to play them.....i would occasionally eeek out a win so i could live with that
as my strength degenerated over the years i could no longer win
so i am now just too impatient ..i mean why sit for 2-3 Hrs playing a game which i will only end up losing?

Sore Loser Regards

whatever the level of this machine i don't care, i ordered it, and it will be introduced in my championship tournament. I then will see it's real level.

It's opponents will be :
MEPHISTO ATLANTA ( the favorite , i am still awaiting this machine),
MEPHISTO MASTER CHESS
NOVAG DIAMONDII
FIDELITY DESIGNER MACH III
NOVAG OBSIDIAN
MEPHISTO LONDON 68000 ( a wood way to heck the hardware of this new machine)
SAITEK CENTURION
CHESS TIGER ( PALM OS)
PHALANX ( PALM OS a software produced to emulate Tal)

I think the result of this tournament will be significant and will show it's real level. Can the new MILLENIUM CHESS GENIUS be the favorite or will it be crushed by his opponents ?

When, oh when comes the postman to bring me this new toy...?
I will embrace it, cuddle it, and then...

My Mephisto Chess Challenger 32(or even 40?)MHz will jump on it...

Excellent opponents - all have existing, statistically solid ratings and all would be within the projected ballpark strength category of the new machine though I'd personally question using the Centurion when you are also using the Master Chess and Atlanta. You could possibly economise and just use the Atlanta out of those three therefore giving you more playing time with the other machines which I consider more worthy opponents.

What time controls are you planning to use?
