I bought Revelation II one month ago. Very nice chess computer with simulation old Mephisto chess together with new strong chess engines like Stockfish or Hiarcs.

I test Revelation a compare with classic chess computers.

Revelation II MMV - 15''
Revelation II Portorose - 3'38''
Revelation II Roma - 40'

Revelation II Fruit 2.1 - 0.2''
Revelation II Rybka 2.2 - 1''
Revelation II Toga 1.2 - 1''
Revelation II Shredder 12.1 - 2''
Revelation II Hiarcs 14.1 - 6''
Revelation II Stockfish 6.0 - 1'02'' !!!

The Revelation machine is 6 times faster than old classic Mephisto machines.

Hi Josef,

If you take speed doubling then Revelation II Portorose is a factor of 2.58 times faster than a Portorose 68020 with 12 MHz. That would make the Revelation Portorose be the equivalent of a 68020 with 75.84 MHz in a simulation. <---- (for Steve ;) SIMULATOR!! j/k)

I use this factor because it helps to understand the ELO improvement effect for the speed doubling. Unfortunately Schachcomputer.Info does not show a rating for the Revelation II Portorose so it is hard to be exact. But if you take Revelation II Lyon and compare it to 68020 Lyon and assume the results would be similar, then you have an ELO difference of 180 ELO. Divide that by 2.58 Factor and you have a speed doubling improvement of 69.77 ELO.

So for example

68020 12 MHz Portorose = 2146 ELO
Revelation II Portorose is probably around ELO 2326 - Assuming it performs the same as Lyon with its increased speed.

I thought I would mention this because when people read 6 times faster then often people assume between 50-70 Elo improvement per x times. And that would have people maybe assume that it could be 300 to 420 ELO better than the 68,020 making it an ELO of between 2446 to 2576 :)

ps...also please don't forget that the Revelation's base programs are 68,000 ROMS.

Best regards
Nick

Hi

You have right, speed in this test is not about ELO. You can see, weak programs find Mate 8 much quickly than strong programs with higher ELO.

What "new" options would you like the NEXT Revelation to have, besides more Retro engines?

bigger board, other light colors, bigger screen?

Finally some news for the Rev II
For Rev II owners with the Emulation package.....
Seems an emulation package upgrade will be offered this Dec.2017 with Johan de Koning engines Including his Tasc R30 programs, Saitek Risc 2500 and Mephisto Montreux programs

as usual the price is a bit steep.. but if you want to drive a Rolls Royce you aren't supposed to complain about the price of gas
