English User Manual for Mephisto Mirage Module
Hello,
I would like to know if anyone is aware of a place where I can get a user manual for the Mephisto Mirage Module.
I was wondering if all the user manuals of the modules in the series basically 'work' the same way, the magic inside the modules being the only difference.
I have looked at the zanchetta.fr site to see if he has a version in English and it is only in German.
Best wishes,
Sergio

Hello Nicolas,
Thank you for the reply to my question.
Apart from the obvious elo difference between the MrkII and the Mirage, do the modules have certain characteristics that set them apart? For example, one module was more positional while the other was tactically stronger?

Hi,
I think there is a typo in your communication: The Mephisto Mirage could be an upgrade of the MM I (and not the MM II).
The programmers of MM I and Mirage are the same (Nitsche & Henne), whereas the programmer of the MM II is Ulf Rathsman.
Edit: Sorry, I confused the MM II for the Mephisto II, those are quite different... But anyway, MM I and Mirage do have the same programmers.
But Nicolas should be quite right with his clarification!
Last update: The MM I contains the same program as the Mephisto III, and is a little faster.
Best regards, Paul

Pardon my ignorance....
So, in order of strength it is MMI, Mirage and then MMII?
I don't quite understand.
I want to start with a module that is 'weaker' and then progress.
Best wishes and thank you for the replies to my messages.

The MM I is around 1500 elo, the Mirage some 40 elopoints stronger.
The MM II is a different league, more then 1800 elo.
If you wanted to step up try for instance the Conquistador or Turbo 16k, they are around 1600 elo.

Thank You Paul....one last question!
Hello Paul,
Thank you for the reply to my message.
I do have one, final question!🙄
Does this mean that the MMV has a greater elo than the MMI, Mirage and MMII?
Best wishes and thanks again for the quick reply to my questions and the patience to deal with a tyro, such as myself! 😳

Hi Sergio,
Yes, the MM V is around 2000 elo!
There is a so-called "Active" rating list, that is a rating based on playing level 30 seconds per move, at http://www.schach-computer.info/wiki/in ... -Elo-Liste, so you can look up some ratings and strength differences for yourself.
I wish you a lot of chess playing pleasure
Regards, Paul

Dear Paul,
Thank you for the link.
I had no idea that there had been so many versions of Mephisto modular chess engines.
I remember buying a module from Countrywide Computers of Ely in the late eighties and hardly ever using it.
I must have lost it or my father must have thrown it away.
I had one of those Mephisto Mobil's and feeling the sheer weight of the thing.
It must have been the size of the early mobile phones!
Strange how things come full circle.
I am desperately looking for these chess computers now, eventhough I have a multiprocessor computer and some of the higher ranked chess engines available at the moment.
I don't know if it is just nostalgia, but I think that there was a certain craftsmanship and 'human-ness' (whatever that means) to them.
Anyway, thank you and those that have spent the time to reply to my questions.
Best Wishes,
Sergio
