Once again my "Reed Revival" method worked with the TSB 4 D1 square springing back to life after being heavily magnetized over night

In The Game...
Savant has white..TSB 4 defends with the French
both computers are out of book at move 7

a typical mistake for computers back in the early 80's
it will be up a B but it dosent recognize it is impossible to mate

1/2-1/2

FINAL POSITION

Savant lights up the DRAW box and the printer indicates ...
1/2 DRAW 1/2
INSUF MATERIAL

the TSB 4 would play on forever

Hi Steve,

Now I am extremely jealous :) The Savant is one of the very few computers that I have never ever been able to play. :( Like several other collectors, I have one, but it has always been unplayable.

Enjoying your post.

Best regards

I was curious to see if Savant would recognize 3 fold Rep draws so i played it this miniature
[Date "2017.1.18"]
[White "Savant"]
[Black "Steve B"]
[TimeControl "1 Min/Avg-"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]

1.c4 Nf6 2.Nf3 c5 3.Nc3 Nc6 4.e4 e5 5.Be2 Nd4 6.Nxe5 Qe7 7.Nf3 Nxe4 8.Nxd4 cxd4 9.Nd5 Qh4 10.O-O Bd6 11.g3

[fen]r1b1k2r/pp1p1ppp/3b4/3N4/2Ppn2q/6P1/PP1PBP1P/R1BQ1RK1 w kq - 0 11[/fen]
now for the double piece sac to get the draw

11..Nxg3 12.fxg3 Bxg3 13.hxg3 Qxg3+ 14.Kh1 Qh3+ 15.Kg1 Qg3+ 16.Kh1 Qh3+
17.Kg1 Qg3+ 1/2-1/2

FINAL POSITION
[fen]r1b1k2r/pp1p1ppp/8/3N4/2Pp4/6q1/PP1PB3/R1BQ1RK1 w kq - 0 18[/fen]

Here Savant prints...
1/2 DRAW 1/2
3RD REPTITION
(actual spelling)

Savant Schlechter Regards

Hi Steve,

Old SSDF used to show Savant at ELO 1366. Mephisto II showed at 1332. I am just wondering how it would fare against a Mephisto II or for example a MGS/ARB Sargon 2.5 or Morphy or even against Scisys Mark 5.

Just wondering if you would have time sometime to play a game against one of these programs or something similar to get a feel for its strength.

Struggling to gage its strength as the TSB is currently not rated anywhere.

Thanks again for sharing your experience with the Savant.

Best regards
Nick

Hi Nick

this old list shows the TSB 4 at 1460
line 156:
http://www.anacadigital.com/dedicados/listaelo1992.html

not sure if that is accurate though..they show the processor as a 6502 and i think it uses a Z80

anyway...
I'll play a 3 game mini match Vs Mephisto II
neither computer ponders while not on the move ..which is great because then i dont have to stay glued to the game and i can actually walk away every so often(code for ..go to the bathroom)
:P

Depends Regards

How did you get it alive ? put in another display from another computer ?
What seems like a fairy tale today may be reality tomorrow.
Here we have a fairy tale of the day after tomorrow....

As i mentioned in an earlier post above
i did not perform this miracle
another person did it ..but yes...my understanding is a brand new display screen was used and the Savant was adapted to work with it

And why can't we do it all in the same way ?
